Bronchitis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi of the lungs , that causes the cilia of the bronchial epithelial cells to stop functioning. Like many disorders, bronchitis can be acute (short-term), or chronic (long-lasting). Chronic bronchitis is a problem commonly seen in smokers , whereas acute bronchitis is almost always caused by viral infection, as elucidated by recent studies.

What Is Bronchitis?
Bronchitis (pronounced: brahn- kite -uss) is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes , the airways that connect the trachea (windpipe) to the lungs. This delicate, mucus-producing lining covers and protects the respiratory system, the organs and tissues involved in breathing. When a person has bronchitis, it may be harder for air to pass in and out of the lungs than it normally would, the tissues become irritated and more mucus is produced. The most common symptom of bronchitis is a cough. When you breathe in (inhale), small, bristly hairs near the openings of your nostrils filter out dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. Bits that slip through become attached to the mucus membrane, which has tiny, hair-like structures called cilia (pronounced: sih -lee-uh) on its surface. But sometimes germs get through the cilia and other defense systems in the respiratory tract and can cause illness. Bronchitis can be acute or chronic . An acute medical condition comes on quickly and can cause severe symptoms, but it lasts only a short time (no longer than a few weeks). Acute bronchitis is most often caused by one of a number of viruses that can infect the respiratory tract and attack the bronchial tubes. Infection by certain bacteria can also cause acute bronchitis. Most people have acute bronchitis at some point in their lives.

Symptoms lasting up to 90 days are usually classified as acute bronchitis; symptoms lasting longer, sometimes for months or years, are usually classified as chronic bronchitis. When chronic bronchitis also decreases airflow, it is considered a defining characteristic of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (see Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ). This chapter discusses acute bronchitis only.

Now red wine can help the lungs
Heather Catchpole ABC Science Online

Chemicals in red wine could be the next treatment for chronic lung disease. Faquier County, Virginia Trawling the wine cellar for potential cures for human ailments in the same way we search tropical rainforests and oceans for useful drugs has yielded a new treatment for chronic lung disease.
Researchers from Imperial College, London have reported in the British Medical Journal that resveratrol, a component of red wine, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help treat a common type of lung disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an irreversible condition where the lungs progressively deteriorate, making it difficult to breathe. The term is used to describe the airflow obstruction that is associated mainly with emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
The major risk factor for COPD is smoking and the only way to slow the disease is to stop smoking, use asthma medication and get some good old fashioned exercise.
Now researchers have found that resveratrol, a polyphenol antioxidant found in the skins of red fruits such as grapes, may suppress the disease.

What is Chronic Bronchitis? The bronchi are air passages connecting the windpipe (trachea) with the sacs of the lung (alveoli) where oxygen is taken up by the blood. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi causing excessive mucous production and swelling of the bronchial walls. Many people suffer a brief attack of acute bronchitis with fever, coughing and spitting when they have a severe cold. Chronic bronchitis, however, is the term applied when this coughing and spitting continue for months and return each year, generally lasting slightly longer each time. Undue breathlessness on exertion is eventually noticed, due to obstruction to air flow in the air passages caused by swelling of the bronchial wall and the presence of mucus that cannot be cleared. For more information on living with Chronic Bronchitis consult the Breathe Easy Guide and other chronic lung disease resources. Emphysema is a disease in which there is destruction of the walls of the air sacs of the lung, and it is frequently preceded by chronic bronchitis. Emphysema adds to the breathlessness suffered by the patient with chronic bronchitis. What Causes Chronic Bronchitis?

  • By far the majority of bronchitis cases stem from viral infections. This means that most cases of bronchitis are short-term and require nothing more than treatment of symptoms to relieve discomfort.
Antibiotics will not cure a viral illness.
    • Experts in infectious diseases have been warning for years that overuse of antibiotics is allowing many bacteria to become resistant to the antibiotics available.
Acetaminophen (Feverall, Panadol, Tylenol), aspirin, or ibuprofen (Motrin, Nuprin, Advil) will help with fever and muscle aches.
Drinking fluids is very important because fever causes the body to lose fluid faster. Lung secretions will be thinner and thus easier to clear when you are well hydrated.
A cool mist vaporizer or humidifier can help decrease bronchial irritation.
An over-the-counter cough suppressant may be helpful. Preparations with guaifenesin (Robitussin, Breonesin, Siltussin) will loosen secretions; dextromethorphan (Benylin, Pertussin, Trocal, Vicks 44) suppresses cough.
Medical Treatment
Treatment of bronchitis can differ depending on the suspected cause.
