INVOLUNTARY SMOKING CAUSES BREAST CANCER TOO
Being around people who are smoking, even as little as one hour a day, can almost triple a woman's risk of contracting breast cancer, the second leading cause of deaths among all American women, and the leading cause of death among middle-aged women. This is the finding of a new study Dr. Alfredo Morabia recently published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Morabia headed a team of researchers from the University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, that analyzed the smoking habits and exposure of nearly 1300 women. Among their findings:
  • Just smoking fewer than 10 cigarettes a day was enough to double a woman's risk of breast cancer.
  • Smoking 10 to 19 cigarettes a day saw the risk jump almost five fold.
  • Women who were exposed to cigarette smoke for one hour per day for 12 consecutive months nearly tripled their risk of contracting this deadly disease. More women die of breast cancer than from any other cancer. It is now the second leading cause of death in American women. Last year doctors diagnosed cancer of the breast in 182,000 women, and 46,000 died from it. It kills more middle-age women than any other disease. Every fifteen minutes at least three women will develop breast cancer and one will die.

Breast cancer cases rise, cancer deaths decline
Doctors say early screening for cancers has helped to reduce death rates From Rea Blakey CNN (CNN) Cancer deaths particularly those for breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers declined during the 1990s, the National Cancer Institute reports. Doctors said early detection might be saving more lives. From 1995 to 1998, deaths from breast cancer fell 3.4 percent; prostate cancer, 4.5 percent; colorectal cancer, 1.3 percent; and lung cancer, 0.8 percent. However, the number of new breast cancer cases rose 1.2 percent per year, from 1992 to 1998. Mammography and early detection have helped to raise incidence rates, said Brenda Edwards of the National Cancer Institute, the final author of the report. "We think that there may be some changes in both the clinical management, surgical management, looking for nodes and the way they're being diagnosed pathologically that may be helping us find more," Edwards said. The figures come from an annual report that is a collaborative effort by the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Breast cancer drug may work for prostate patients as well
    March 1, 1999

Web posted at: 10:42 p.m. EST (0342 GMT)
NEW YORK (CNN) A new drug recently approved to fight breast cancer in women may be just as effective in treating advanced prostate cancer in men, scientists said Monday. Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles have found that some cases of prostate cancer involved the HER-2 gene, usually associated with breast cancer. The bioengineered drug Herceptin has been successful in blocking excessive HER-2 growth in late-stage breast cancer patients. The presence of HER-2 in prostate cancer patients raises the possibility that the drug may be helpful to men as well. Nearly 200,000 American men develop prostate cancer every year and about 40,000 die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. It is the second-deadliest form of cancer among men, behind lung cancer. Doctors have known since 1941 that prostate cancer is stimulated by androgens, or male sex hormones. The standard treatment has been to surgically or chemically castrate patients to eliminate the tumor's source of hormones.

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) The amount of weight a woman gains after age 18 is a strong signal as to whether she will get breast cancer later in life, according to new research released Wednesday by the American Cancer Society. In one of the largest studies of weight and breast cancer to date, researchers said older women who gained 20 to 30 pounds after high school graduation were 40 percent more likely to get breast cancer than women who kept the weight off. The risk doubled if a woman gained more than 70 pounds, said Heather Spencer Feigelson, senior epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society. "Breast cancer is strongly dependent on body weight," Feigelson said. "Even modest amounts of weight gain lead to a significantly increased risk of breast cancer."

Study: Drug cuts breast cancer rate for women at risk
April 5, 1998 Web posted at: 7:16 p.m. EDT (2316 GMT) PHILADELPHIA (CNN) Women at increased risk for developing breast cancer may be able to cut that risk nearly in half by taking tamoxifen, a drug now used to treat the disease, according to results of a study by the National Cancer Institute. The results, reported Sunday in The Philadelphia Inquirer, could potentially affect millions of woman as they age, because women older than 60 are considered at increased risk for developing breast cancer. Also considered at risk are women with a family history of breast cancer and those with precancerous tissue in their breasts. Tamoxifen works by interfering with the interaction of breast cancer cells and estrogen, a hormone involved in the division and growth of cancerous cells. Women at risk for breast cancer:
    • Family history
    • Advanced age
    • Precancerous breast tissue
Source: American Cancer Society "(Tamoxifen) attaches to the receptor in the cells that 'sees' estrogen and prevents the cell from 'seeing' estrogen. So it can actually stop the growth of breast cells and of breast cancer cells," said Dr. Larry Norton of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Study finds drug can help young breast cancer patients
Researchers say tamoxifen could save 20,000 lives annually
May 14, 1998 Web posted at: 3:18 p.m. EDT (1918 GMT) LONDON (CNN) Giving younger breast cancer patients the drug tamoxifen could save 20,000 lives around the world each year, British researchers reported Thursday in the medical journal Lancet. Scientists from Oxford University reviewed clinical trials from 55 countries and found that tamoxifen helped prevent a cancer relapse for women of all ages whose tumors were sensitive to the female hormone estrogen. Currently breast cancer patients who are under 40 or pre-menopausal have not routinely received the drug therapy because doctors weren't sure it would help them live longer. Oxford University scientists believe all women with estrogen-sensitive breast cancer should take tamoxifen The comprehensive British study analyzed trials involving 37,000 women. Tamoxifen worked in all age groups, including patients with node-negative tumors that had not spread into the lymph nodes and in those who had chemotherapy.
    Relapse rate cut in half
"We've got evidence that this drug, which is already saving more lives than any other cancer drug, could save twice as many lives," Dr. Rory Collins of Oxford said Thursday. The study showed that within 10 years of surgery, about one third of patients relapsed and died. But starting tamoxifen early and continuing for around five years cut the relapse rate in half and improved survival for patients of all ages.

First lady announces $27 million for cancer research
January 14, 2000 Web posted at: 11:06 a.m. EST (1606 GMT) GARDEN CITY, New York (CNN) Speaking to a group of breast cancer survivors and activists, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton announced a $27 million initiative to research the environmental causes of cancer. "We have reason to believe, based on the statistics, that there is some environmental connection or cause between the advent of the disease in an individual's life and the living conditions here on Long Island," Clinton said Thursday. Clinton said the proposal would be a $10 million increase over the previous year's budget allocations. The initiative would be part of President Bill Clinton's 2001 budget, and funding would go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Environmental Health Lab.
