Californians seek cause for high breast cancer rates
By Rusty Dornin

Clarke says women might be unknowingly increasing their chance of getting cancer by "not having children at all, delaying child bearing." Story Tools
SAUSILOTO, California (CNN) Marin County, California, seems like paradise. Just across the Golden Gate bridge, it's home to rich, beautiful, healthy people. But a television ad paints a different picture. "People are dying in Marin County and no one seems to care," says the commerial. These tough-to-ignore ads are part of the Marin County Cancer Project's Search for the Cause campaign. What they're searching for is the reason the rate of breast cancer here is 45 percent higher than the national average. No one seems to know why. Annie Fox was 29 when she got breast cancer. She died three months ago at age 35. Her fiancee, Chris Stewart, said it's tough not to be angry. "I'm certainly lonely and I miss her," he said. Sheila Levine joined the cause to find a solution years ago. Then, last year, she got breast cancer herself.

What is Inflammatory Breast Cancer?
Information about IBC is also available in Magyarul and Deutsch There is a support email list with about 400 members; you can browse messages or join the list Inflammatory Breast Cancer ( IBC) is a relatively rare form of breast cancer (about 1-4%), and symptoms usually include the following:
  • A warm swollen breast that does not change through the menstrual cycle or respond to antibiotics
  • Skin which is red or appears dimpled like an orange (peau d'orange)
Other possible signs of IBC include:
  • The sudden appearance of a large lump in the breast
  • Itching or pain in the breast
  • A nipple which is flattened or inverted, possibly with a discharge
  • Swollen lymph nodes under the arm or above the collarbone
(The IBC Research Foundation has a longer list of symptoms These symptoms often appear with IBC because the cancer is fast-growing and blocks the lymph vessels in the breast and skin. All of the listed symptoms may also be present with benign breast disorders. Different women have different symptoms, and although IBC is normally associated with infiltration of the skin lymphatic system, in some cases there may be no visible skin changes.

FDA panel approves potentially powerful breast cancer drug
Tamoxifen has been sold for 25 years to treat breast cancer
Decision on advanced-cancer fighting drug pending
September 2, 1998
Web posted at: 2:38 p.m. EDT (1838 GMT) (CNN) The drug tamoxifen was recommended by a government panel on Wednesday to be sold to reduce the risk of breast cancer in healthy women. The Food and Drug Administration panel is also considering approval for Herceptin, a ground-breaking approach to treating advanced breast cancer. Tamoxifen, an effective and widely-used breast cancer drug, would be used as a preventative measure for women who are at high risk, if it is approved by the FDA. The FDA is likely to follow its advisors' recommendations and make a final decision on the drug by November. A study by the National Cancer Institute released in April found tamoxifen could help prevent the disease in some women.

Clinical research studies offer us the best hope for the proper evaluation of drugs and medical techniques. This site offers you the opportunity to obtain credible information on clinical trial research and to assess your chances of getting breast cancer. Many drugs, agents, and remedies have been suggested to prevent cancer. This Web site supports and advocates only those that have undergone the rigorous testing of a U.S. federally approved clinical trial that are sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Two such clinical trials include the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT) and the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR). The BCPT included more than 13,000 women at increased risk for breast cancer and demonstrated the value of the drug tamoxifen in reducing the incidence of the disease in this population. The second prevention trial, STAR, is one of the largest breast cancer prevention studies ever untaken. This study recruited more than 19,000 volunteers and closed to enrollment in October 2004. Results of this trial may be known by Spring 2006.

And in 2000, Latina pop star, Soraya, was one of them. But even before her diagnosis, the singer was no stranger to breast cancer. Her mother, grandmother, and aunt all battled the disease. "It was something that was a constant in our family," she says. Following her mother's death from complications related to breast cancer, Soraya became actively involved in breast cancer awareness organizations in an effort to spread the word about early detection, and the singer practiced what she preached. In June 2000, while performing a self-breast exam, she made an alarming discovery.

Beware of the Dark Side of Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
by Sherrill Sellman
There has been much ado in the press recently about the wonders of the drug tamoxifen (nolvadex). It has been heralded as a major breakthrough in the treatment and possible prevention of breast cancer. Tamoxifen is now the number one recommended drug treatment for women recovering from breast cancer. With half a billion dollars (US) in annual revenues , it is currently used by more women with breast cancer than any other prescription drug. But as is the case with all pharmaceutical drugs, there are serious dangers which seem to be conveniently glossed over. Far from the savior of women's lives, it has potential lethal side-effects.

The Breast
The female breasts are modified sweat glands composed of lobes and lobules interspersed with adipose tissue and connective tissue. Ducts drain from each lobule. These converge to form a lactiferous duct that drains from each lobe. The lactiferous ducts merge just beneath the nipple to form a lactiferous sinus. The functional secretory unit in lactation is the terminal duct lobular unit. Here, each duct has a lining epithelium surrounded by a thin myoepithelial cell layer responsive to oxytocin, the hormone that stimulates lactation. Neoplasms may arise in either the ductular epithelium, lobules, or the stroma. However, the majority of cancers arise in the ducts.
  • Normal breast, high power microscopic. Normal breast, duct with myoepithelial cells identified by immunoperoxidase staining for actin, high power microscopic.
  • Incidence of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is very rare before age 20 and is rarely diagnosed in women younger than age 25. Past that age, the incidence rises steadily to reach a peak around the age of menopause. The rate of increase is lessened after menopause, but older women are still at increasing risk over time. About 1 in 8 women in the United States and Canada will develop breast cancer. This incidence is similar for many European countries. However, breast cancer is much less common in Asia.
