What is Borderline Personality Disorder?
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. While less known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is more common, affecting 2 percent of adults, mostly young women.

Borderline Personality Disorder
What is Borderline Personality Disorder?
Quick Summary:
Borderline personality disorder is characterized by mood instability and poor self-image. People with this disorder are prone to constant mood swings and bouts of anger. Often, they will take their anger out on themselves, causing injury to their own body. Suicidal threats and actions are not uncommon. Borderlines think in very black and white terms and often form intense, conflict-ridden relationships. They are quick to anger when their expectations are not met.
Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder:
  • Self-injury or attempted suicide Strong feelings of anger, anxiety, or depression that last for several hours Impulsive behavior Drug or alcohol abuse Feelings of low self-worth Unstable relationships with friends, family, and boyfriends/girlfriends
Additional Information:
Borderline personality disorder was so-named because it was originally thought to be at the "borderline" of psychosis. The disorder is relatively common, affecting 2% of adults. Women are much more likely to suffer borderline than men. Nearly 20% of psychiatric hospitalizations are due to borderline. With treatment, patients are often able to see their symptoms improve.
Treatment involves therapy in which the patient learns to talk through his or her feelings rather than unleashing them in destructive and self-defeating ways. Medication may be helpful, and treatment of any alcohol or substance abuse issues is required. Brief hospitalization is sometimes required, especially in cases involving psychotic episodes or suicide threats or attempts.

Borderline Personality Disorder
What is it?
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a chronic, debilitating biological disorder affecting the limbic system of the brain that controls emotions. People with BPD have difficulty regulating their emotions. Thus BPD is also known as emotional regulation disorder (ERD). Since the BPD is a medical disorder, proper medications must come before therapy.
  • 2% of adults have this disorder.
  • 20% present in psychiatric hospitals.
  • 11% in outpatient clinics.

Emotional Regulation Disorder
The term BPD was coined during a time when little was known about this disorder. This name does not describe the disorder accurately and a new name needs to take it's place. Emotional regulation disorder is very commonly used along with emotional intensity disorder. Feel free to vote yourself on the name for this very painful disorder and read information on other's thoughts.

and the serial bully
Some visitors to Bully OnLine have suggested that the bullies in their lives exhibit characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder. It seems to me that in some cases Borderline Personality Disorder could be the manifestation in adulthood of a psychiatric injury caused by childhood abuse which may have been intentional or unintentional. In people whose behaviour profile is inclined towards that of a target the disorder seems to manifest in varying degrees as a sense of heightened fragility. In people whose behaviour profile is inclined towards that of a bully the disorder seems to manifest as aggression towards others as described on this web site. The main symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder are:
  • Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment. A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation (called "splitting"). Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self.
