Body dysmorphic disorder
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a condition in which sufferers become preoccupied with their appearance, imagining themselves to be ugly or defective in the way they look. Led by Dr David Veale, the UK's leading Consultant Psychiatrist in this field, The Priory Hospital North London is one of the few hospitals in the country to have specialist services for this distressing problem. A BDD self-help support group also runs from the hospital each month.

Information compiled by Maurice Sterndale D Hyp. PDCHyp. BDD is a chronic disorder that is equally common in men and women, and usually presents during adolescence and young adulthood. The average age of onset is 17 years. Persons who have BDD are most often concerned with the following: skin imperfections, such as wrinkles, scars, acne and blemishes; hair (head or body hair, too much or too little); and facial features (e.g., a misshapen nose, overall shape, genital size and symmetry of a feature). Such persons are preoccupied with their perceived "gross imperfection(s)" and may ask their GP to correct the perceived defect, or they may seek referral to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. In a British study 62 percent of patients with BDD had discussed their symptoms with their GP. Of the patients in the study, 48 percent had seen a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist at least once, and 26 percent had undergone at least one operations About 2 to 7 percent of persons who have undergone plastic surgery may have BDD Young people with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) worry about some aspect of their appearance. They worry, for example, that they have pimples or that their skin is scarred or bumpy, their nose is too big, they are fat or too thin. Or they may think something else is wrong with how they look. When others tell them that they look fine or that the flaw they perceive is minimal (or non-existent), young people with this disorder find it hard to believe this reassurance.

Golden Girl Uma admits to having Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
By Sherry Kahn
May 15th, 2001 In Snow White, the princess’ evil stepmother gazes into the looking glass, asking, “Mirror mirror on the wall who’s the fairest of them all?” Here in the real world, a person who gazes into a mirror thinking, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, I know I’m the ugliest of them all,” may be suffering from BDD, or Body Dysmorphic Disorder - certainly something far more dangerous than the stepmother's vanity. In a recent interview with Talk Magazine, even beauty goddess Uma Thurman admitted to struggling with the disorder - one that has its victims feeling that they are simply not attractive. The lanky 6-foot blonde admitted to "being troubled about her weight" ever since giving birth to her daughter, Maya, in July 1998. Thurman, whose beauty and bodacious body are celebrated world-wide, has recently been named the spokesmodel for Lancome's Miracle perfume. She also stars in a new movie released this week, Golden Bowl.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder Posted by Pennywise on Wednesday September 10, @11:53PM
from the my-butt-is-too-big dept.

The NYT recently ran this story (FRR) about Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a debilitating disorder in which a person becomes obsessed with certain features of their body and fixated on their perceived imperfections. The article interviews Katharine Phillips , an expert on BDD. Dr. Phillips estimates that body dysmorphic disorder affects 1 to 2 percent of Americans, men and women. "B.D.D. remains vastly underrecognized and vastly underdiagnosed," Dr. Phillips said. "Most people probably know someone with B.D.D. but just don't realize it." For a more in depth look at BDD, check out a lecture (RealAudio) by Phillips.

They have the first surgery and then the second and often the third. No matter how much is taken away they still see breasts. In one case during the second surgery the young man had muscle removed and created a major distortion of his chest. It is a fairly common condition and exists in various degrees. It is difficult to treat but the first option is drugs and for those that it helps it is a life saver. The most common treatment is Cognitive Behavior Therapy which reports good results for many. I believe that EMDR holds promise for many in the future. Read the links and books below for more information.

community diaries shop The Perfect Imperfection Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Teens By Carma Haley Shoemaker In the United States, greater than one-third of all women between the ages of 15 and 39 have a condition called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). This disorder is made evident when preoccupations with body appear and especially when the preoccupations focus on one area. Body dysmorphic disorder interferes with social, career, sexual and personal relations and activities. However, there is no one cause or even one set of symptoms, which makes the issue even more pressing, especially in teen girls. What is BDD?
According to Abigail Natenshon, psychotherapist and author of When Your Child Has an Eating Disorder But why? "Reasons why BDD develops come together in the context of genetic susceptibilities and temperament," says Natenshon. "In these cases, the whole can be greater and more devastating than the sum of its parts. The question why is far less significant than what to do to alleviate the emotional pain that BDD carries with it." Take Note
While BDD is a dominant disorder, teens do not wear a sign on their neck to let you know it's there. Parents need to learn what it is, what it does and what to look for.

But for people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) this anxiety is constant, and they’ll go to devastating lengths to change or mask the way they look. Today the distressing experience that is Body Dysmorphic Disorder, no doubt you’ve heard by now of Botox a popular product based on the toxin that causes botulism. People are injecting it into their wrinkles in order to look young and smoothed skinned. Well you won’t be surprised to hear that Botox is absolutely booming in the United States where sales last year topped $300 million. But Botox is of course just one of a range of cosmetic enhancement procedures available. In the US cosmetic surgery operations average out at around four and a half million a year and we’re not just talking about mega rich super stars either.

Body dysmorphic disorder: through a glass darkly
Is body dysmorphic disorder a real disease or simply vanity? Simon Clausen takes a second look Most people care about how they look, and 93% of women and 82% of men care about their appearance and try to improve it.1 Many people wish that they were taller, their skin smoother, or stomach flatter. Some people buy flattering clothes or wear make-up. But when do normal concerns become an obsession? How widespread is it? BDD can go unrecognised as individuals’ are often too ashamed to discuss their symptoms, often because of secrecy and shame. Several studies have shown incidence is higher than first thought. One study found that the condition may affect up to 1% of the population in the United States2 and another showed that 4% of US college students seemed to have BDD.3 the condition affects as many men as women,4 and the age of onset is commonly 20-30 years. Clinical features Obsessions related to BDD may manifest as excessive disproportionate concerns about a minor physical anomaly or as recurrent thoughts provoking anxiety about an entirely imagined defect. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to see things the way the patient does.

W ith her long strawberry-blond hair, large green eyes and beautiful complexion, 22-year-old Jennifer would be considered attractive by any standards. She reminded Katharine A. Phillips of the captain of a high school cheerleading squad, but there had been no crisp fall afternoons on the sidelines of the football field for Jennifer: She had dropped out of high school, and was steadily dropping out of public life. "I'm too scared to go out - everyone will see how ugly I am," Jennifer told Phillips, the assistant professor of psychiatry who diagnosed the young woman with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Phillips, director of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Body Image Program at Butler Hospital, is one of the nation's foremost experts of BDD, in which sufferers are obsessed with perceived flaws in their appearance to the extent that it disrupts their life, and at its extreme can lead to thoughts of suicide. Jennifer purchased clothes through catalogs, went to the food store during the middle of the night, and rarely ventured out of her parents' home during the day because she believed her skin was pimpled and scarred, Phillips wrote in her book on the disorder, "The Broken Mirror."
