Overview Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by an excessive preoccupation with a real or imagined defect in one's own physical appearance. People with BDD have a distorted or exaggerated view of how they look and are obsessed with actual physical characteristics or perceived flaws, such as a certain facial feature or imperfections of the skin. They often think of themselves as ugly or disfigured. People with the disorder often have problems controlling negative thoughts about their appearance, even when reassured by others that they look fine and that the minor or perceived flaws aren't noticeable or excessive. BDD is a type of somatoform disorder. Somatoform disorders are characterized by physical symptoms that suggest a medical condition. However, a thorough medical evaluation doesn't reveal any underlying medical cause for the physical symptoms.

Information on Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
What is it?
This disorder has also been nicknamed 'Imagined Ugliness Syndrome' for sufferers of the condition have an irrational preoccupation with a perceived body defect, either present in themselves or in others; the latter being dysmorphophobia by proxy. BDD sufferers cannot accept that their fears of their perceived body defect are out of all proportion, and frequently seek plastic surgery/other measures in an attempt to rectify the perceived problem. If you can answer YES to most of the questions it is likely that you are affected by that condition. Over the past 6 months:-
  • Have you felt disgusted by a particular aspect of your body? Do you feel that a part of your body is abnormal? Do you spend a lot of time examining/scrutinising your appearance? Do you avoid looking at yourself in mirrors, windows etc.? Do you feel that other people are looking at your appearance or are disgusted by it?

Rate . "The rate of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in inpatient psychiatric settings and the nature of the presenting complaints are unknown. Because of the shame and humiliation that BDD patients suffer, we hypothesized that, unless specifically screened for at the time of admission, BDD would be underdiagnosed in psychiatric inpatients. . . . . Sixteen (13.1%) of the 122 subjects were diagnosed with BDD. None of the subjects with BDD had been diagnosed with BDD by their treating physician during hospitalization. All 16 subjects reported that they would not raise the issue with their physician unless specifically asked due to feelings of shame" (Grant et al. 2001:517). Neuro-notes . Clomipramine, a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, may better reduce symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (which is likely related to obsessive-compulsive disorder) than might desipramine, a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, according to a report in the November 1999 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry See also NONVERBAL LEARNING DISORDER (David B. Body dysmorphic disorder
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental disorder which involves a disturbed body image . The central feature of BDD is that persons who are afflicted with it are excessively dissatisfied with their body because of a perceived physical defect. An example would be a man who is extremely worried that his nose is too big, although other people don't notice anything unusual about it. edit
Diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV-TR)
The DSM-IV-TR , the latest version of the diagnostic manual of the American Psychiatric Association (see also: DSM cautionary statement ), lists three necessary criteria for a diagnosis of body dysmorphic disorder:
  • Preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance. If a slight physical anomaly is present, the person's concern is markedly excessive. The preoccupation causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

    Introduction
Body image is the mental picture we have of the size, shape and form of our bodies through our mind’s eye. It is not so much about our actual appearance but is more about the ‘internal’ view of how we look – how we feel about the way we think we look and what we think others see when they look at us. Body image is strongly affected by social factors including the culture we live in, the influence of the media, fashion trends and even our family members, friends and colleagues at work and school. In our society over the past few years, increasing importance and emphasis has been placed on physical beauty and perfection and many of us are spending a lot of time and effort on our appearance. We wear make up, go to the gym, buy clothes that are stylish and flattering, spend a lot of time styling our hair and even resort to having cosmetic surgery - all in the hope of looking more attractive. Growing up in such a world can leave us feeling a little insecure especially if we don’t think we measure up to how we believe the ‘ ideal’ woman or man should look. It isn’t surprising that some people become so preoccupied with attaining perfection that they develop a distorted picture of their own body image.

It causes significant distress or impairment in functioning. The name is derived from the Greek word, dismorfia dis meaning abnormal or apart, and morpho meaning shape. Before 1987, BDD was referred to as dysmorphobia, so named by psychopathologist Enrique Morselli in 1891. Most people with BDD are not "ugly" at all. Their physical appearance is likely to go unnoticed. They are usually shy, with poor eye contact and low self-esteem. They often go to extremes to camouflage their imagined ugliness, wearing sunglasses, hats, or bulky clothing. Several studies have found that almost 90% of BDD obsessions are face related, followed by hair, skin, and eyes (Yaryura-Tobias and Neziroglu, 1997b). But any body part can be the focus of concentration. Often, people with facial and skin dysmorphia pick and dig at their skin. Some have concerns involving body symmetry. Others have muscle dysmorphia, a type of BDD in which patients worry that their bodies are small and puny. Usually just the opposite is true; typically they are typically large and muscular. BDD by proxy is a form in which a person obsesses about supposed flaws in another person’s appearance.

WHAT IS BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER? Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a condition that involves an intense preoccupation with a particular aspect(s) of physical appearance in a normal appearing person. Although individuals can become preoccupied with any aspect of their appearance, concern with facial features is the most common. Patients may complain, for example, that their nose is too large nose, their hairline is receding, or they have facial blemishes. BDD first appeared in the scientific literature in 1886 when a researcher by the name of Morselli provided a detailed description of the disorder. He conceputalized BDD as a subjective feeling of ugliness terming it "dysmorphophobia." It was later referred to as "imagined ugliness." The current psychiatric diagnostic manual (DSM-IV) provides the following criteria for diagnosis of BDD:
    • Preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance. If a slight physical anomaly is present, the person's concern is markedly excessive. The preoccupation causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning. The preoccupation is not better accounted for by another mental disorder, such as anorexia nervosa.
