Anemias comprise an array of disorders that result in low red blood cell count. This may be due to inadequate synthesis or increased degradation of the cells. These conditions will affect the blood's oxygen carrying capacity, and can lead to ischemia and tissue death. Other blood disorders, such as those affecting coagulation factors, can lead to abnormal affecting clotting factors and regulatory proteins can lead to abnormal clotting, thrombosis, or hemorrhage.

Hematology and Blood Disorders
Blood is the life-maintaining fluid that circulates through the body's heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries. It carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.
Because the functions of blood are many and complex, there are many disorders that require clinical care by a physician or other healthcare professional. These conditions include anemias, bleeding disorders, as well as cancers of the blood.
Hematology is the scientific study of blood and blood-forming tissues. A hematologist is a physician who specializes in the functions and disorders of the blood.

HRSA Awards Grants Worth $885,000 to Improve Treatment of Inherited Blood Disorders HRSA has awarded three grants totaling $524,521 to support comprehensive medical care for the inherited blood disorder thalassemia and a grant for $360,000 for hemophilia treatment.
The three-year thalassemia grants will support systems of comprehensive care – including screening, diagnosis, education, counseling and specialized medical management – for individuals and families at risk for or affected by the ailment.. Awards went to Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland Calif. , $175,000; Children’s Hospital in Boston , $174,521; and Weill Medical College New York City, $175,000.
Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders characterized by absence or decreased production of hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body. The disorders cause anemia and, in some severe cases, death at birth. In the United States , thalassemia is found in people of African, Mediterranean , Middle Eastern and South Asian descent.

Laserbeamed biochip detects blood disorders
Albuquerque , 28 September 98 Molecular nanotechnology and nanomedicine scientific concepts involve the art of manipulating atoms in such a way that you can use their characteristics to build fully new materials and objects. As if scientists were to be offered "the finger of God" to create whatever they want. A team of researchers at the Sandia National Laboratory and the National Institutes of Health recently developed a biochip which in a flash detects blood disorders and nanometer-scale changes in cell structure by inserting blood samples into a laser beam generation process. Is this one of the first medical breakthroughs, nanophilosopher Michael Wisz has in mind when expressing his firm belief that "molecular nanotech will come with tiny probes cruising the bloodstream looking for foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria in a attempt to eliminate most of the infectious diseases"? The Sandia prototype device is able to track sickle-cell anemia as well as cell particles affected by the AIDs virus. The biochip outperforms the traditional pap smear tests in distinguishing between cancerous and healthy cells. The researchers even can monitor both unrestricted cell growth and cell death or apoptosis. This process of cell suicide is generated in cases where unwanted human tissue has to be removed in order to support the proper growth of organs, limbs and neurons. The new device acts as a lab-on-a-chip, inserting fluids into a micro-laboratory for on the spot display of results. This speed of diagnosis can save many people's lives in situations of terrorist biological or chemical attacks. Under normal conditions, patients no longer need to wait for the results after a blood test.

MOLECULAR GENETICS OF BLOOD DISORDERS
The Molecular Genetics of Blood Disorders Research Program combines efforts of both basic and clinical faculty in the area of molecular genetics. It includes research projects using molecular genetics techniques to study blood disorders affecting the Puerto Rican population. Despite the importance of studying the genetic variants of hereditary diseases in ethnic groups such as the Hispanic populations, the level of research activity in this specific area in the Medical Sciences Campus has been low. Thus, this research program represents a joint effort of several clinical and basic science investigators to develop biomedical research in the area of genetics of blood disorders.
