Experts gather to review blood disorders' treatment
More than 4,000 people from around the world gather in Sydney today for a five-day medical conference on blood disorders. The Thrombosis and Haemostasis Congress (THC) deals with two ends of the spectrum - blood clots, as in deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), and the process of stopping bleeding that occurs in disorders such as haemophilia. Congress president Colin Chesterman says delegates from 79 countries will discuss the latest findings in research and treatment, which have a widespread impact on medical practice. "These processes are important right across the board in medicine - in surgery, in obstetrics and in heart disease and so on," he said. "So the processes that we're talking about cover a very large amount of medicine and I guess that's why there's such a large following."

University Hospital is the only hospital in Central New York to offer comprehensive pediatric services for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and blood disorders including leukemia, anemia, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, and solid tumors. A special inpatient unit is dedicated to the care of children and young adults with cancer. Care is provided by six physicians specializing in hematology/oncology, three nurse practitioners, two child life specialists, an education specialist and a social worker. Care is coordinated with the child's primary care provider and, when appropriate, with other medical professionals. Cancer specialists demonstrate on an ongoing basis that the majority of childhood malignancies are both treatable and curable. The Division of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology participates in the Children's Oncology Group, a nationally funded group of pediatric oncologists devoted to multimodality, state-of-the-art management of pediatric malignancies. This affiliation allows the center to provide the most current treatment protocols for children with cancer. In addition to providing excellent clinical care, a number of staff maintain active laboratory research programs.

What is a Bleeding Disorder?
History
What is a Bleeding Disorder?
Bleeding disorders is a general term for a wide range of medical problems that lead to poor blood clotting and continuous bleeding. Doctors also call them terms such as coagulopathy, abnormal bleeding and clotting disorders.
When someone has a bleeding disorder they have a tendency to bleed longer. The disorders can result from defects in the blood vessels or from abnormalities in the blood itself. The abnormalities may be in blood clotting factors or in platelets.
Blood clotting, or coagulation, is the process that controls bleeding. It changes blood from a liquid to a solid. It's a complex process involving as many as 20 different plasma proteins, or blood clotting factors. Normally, a complex chemical process occurs using these clotting factors to form a substance called fibrin that stops bleeding. When certain coagulation factors are deficient or missing, the process doesn't occur normally.
Within seconds of an injury, tiny cells in the blood, called platelets, bunch together around the wound. Blood proteins, platelets, calcium and other tissue factors react together and form what's called a clot, which acts like a net over the wound. Over the next several days to weeks, the clot strengthens, then dissolves when the wound is healed.

The Hematology Service provides hematology consultations for patients at the Clinical Center and participates in the training of hematology fellows. Patients with a broad range of hematologic disorders must be available in order for the senior staff of the Service to maintain clinical expertise and to provide the breadth of experience necessary for the fellowship program. The purpose of this protocol is to meet these needs by allowing the Hematology Service to see patients with a spectrum of hematologic diseases not studied on existing research protocols at the NIH. These patients will be evaluated over the course of several outpatient visits and returned to the care of their referring physicians.

Neem has been a major blood tonic and blood purifier in the systems of medicine found in India and Pakistan. In an analysis of 36 plant drugs attributed with blood purifying properties, neem was found to have the widest range of beneficial effects ( Vohora, 1986 It is believed to remove toxins from the blood and promote a healthy circulation ( Chattopadhyay, et al, 1992a ). Small amounts of neem leaf extracts have been found to protect the liver from damage when toxic agents were used to induce hepatocellular necrosis ( Chattopadhyay, et al, 1992b ).
