(Read about " Leukemia " " Lymphoma " " Anemia ") The following provides information on many of the terms concerning disorders of the blood. ALL - Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia ALL is a usually rapidly progressive malignant disorder involving the production of immature white blood cells (BLASTS) which results in the replacement of normal bone marrow with blast cells. Also called Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. Appears most commonly in children, but can occur in adults. Last Review Date: June 2004 Table of Contents INTRODUCTION: BLOOD CELLS Blood cells, consisting of red cells, white cells, and platelets , are made in the bone marrow , a soft, spongy tissue found in the center of large bones. In healthy people, millions of new blood cells are produced each hour to carry out important body functions. red blood cells erythrocytes ) carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. white blood cells leukocytes ) fight infections and illness. platelets thrombocytes ) cause the blood to clot, a process that stops bleeding when there is an injury. The body carefully regulates the activity of bone marrow to produce the correct number of each type of cell. If this regulation process is disrupted and the marrow produces too many or too few cells, a blood disorder occurs. The blood disorders discussed in this booklet include: Also included: All of these blood disorders require medical attention. Depending on your treatment, there may be long periods of time when you experience no symptoms, but you should always be alert to any changes that occur with your condition. If your symptoms arise or worsen, contact your doctor immediately. Also, feel free to contact your doctor with questions you have about your disorder, the treatment you are receiving, or any other concerns you may have.

Just about everyone knows that we can't live without blood. Without blood, our organs couldn't get the oxygen and nutrients they need to survive, we couldn't keep warm or cool off, we couldn't fight infections, and we couldn't get rid of our own waste products. Without enough blood, we'd weaken and die. So how exactly does blood do these things? How is it made, and what's in it? How does blood clot? These questions and more are explained in this article about the mysterious, life-sustaining fluid called blood. What Is Blood and What Does It Do?
Two types of blood vessels carry blood throughout our bodies: The arteries carry oxygenated blood (blood that has received oxygen from the lungs) from the heart to the rest of the body. The blood then travels through the veins back to the heart and lungs, where it receives more oxygen. As the heart beats, you can feel blood traveling through the body at your pulse points - like the neck and the wrist - where large, blood-filled arteries run close to the surface of the skin. The blood that flows through this network of veins and arteries is called whole blood . Whole blood contains three types of blood cells, including:

"Keeping more than hope alive"
Who we are We are a dedicated group of parents, grandparents, friends, and volunteers who have been touched in some way by a child with cancer.
We are here to walk alongside families of newly diagnosed children.
We believe in the old saying " been there, done that, got the T-shirt ". We do not claim to have all the answers but we are able to facilitate the search thereof.
We operate primarily in the Pietermaritzburg area but have assisted and maintained contact with families from areas like Kokstad, Ladysmith, Nottingham Road, and Taylor's Halt.
The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation is a country wide voluntary organisation. It brings together the parents of children who suffer from all varieties of cancer or life threatening blood disorders.
In 2000 a new national organisation was formed, linking parent groups in all parts of the country.

Early signs of this disease are often diagnosed as many different disorders before being correctly diagnosed. This inability to correctly diagnose is not due to any form of medical inefficiency, but is due to the disease only being recognised in the last 9 years, and it's ability to mimic the symptoms of a number of well known and documented diseases. Even though I have a clinical diagnosis of APLS, wear an SOS Talisman bracelet and carry a medical fact card on me, in an emergency the Accident and Emergency doctors still insist on treating the possibly catastrophic events as a Migraine. I hope this site will help to raise the awareness of many doctors and health care professionals, and give help and the comfort of understanding the problems to patients and their families.

It carries away waste matter and carbon dioxide, and brings nourishment, electrolytes, hormones, vitamins, antibodies, heat, and oxygen to the tissues.
