Infections
Insects may carry infectious organisms that they can pass on when they bite. Most people know that a mosquito bite may give you malaria, especially in Africa, Asia and South America. Among the many infections, you could catch relapsing fever and Chagas' disease from bed bugs in Mexico, yellow fever from mosquitoes in Venezuela or Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever from ticks in Massachusetts, US. Always check for potential problems in the country you're travelling to and get vaccinated if you can. One common fear is that mosquito bites might pass on HIV. But studies have shown no evidence of HIV transmission through mosquitoes or any other insects - even in areas where there are many cases of AIDS and large populations of mosquitoes.

VENOMOUS BITES AND STINGS general poisoning , prevention is better than cure, so take care when in an area frequented by snakes and spiders, and treat venomous sea creatures with respect. This section will cover the following bites and stings: Snakes Should you see a snake, LEAVE IT ALONE - do not attempt to kill it as all snakes are protected by law, and besides, the creature will defend itself vigorously. Stay clear of likely habitats, and always pay special attention to young children playing near long grass and bush. Only approximately 15% of people struck by poisonous snakes are envenomated, but always treat for the worst case, and assume that venom has been injected. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
  • puncture marks, or parallel scratches on the skin - rarely any pain anxiety pale, cool skin with progressive onset of sweating rapid, weak pulse rapid, shallow breathing breathing difficulties blurred vision, drooping eyelids difficulty swallowing and speaking abdominal pain nausea and/or vomiting headache collapse - progressing to a comatose state
CARE AND TREATMENT

The majority of insects in Australia are not harmful to humans. Some insects bite and sting if they are threatened so it is best to avoid touching them if you want to avoid being stung or bitten. Some people are allergic to certain insect bites or venom. In the case of an allergic reaction to bites or stings, medical attention should be sought. Call a doctor or hospital for guidance. Mites, spiders, scorpions and ticks are some other well known biting and stinging arthropods. These animals are not insects. Medical information related to these groups can be found at the Medical Entomology website
Bed bugs
Two species of bed bug occur in Australia, Cimex lectularis and Cimex hemipterus . Bed bugs are relatively small insects, about 5 mm in size. The body is dorsoventrally (from back to front) flattened and they have no wings. They have obvious eyes and sucking mouthparts, and are reddish brown in colour. Bed bugs are blood feeders and are most active at night or in the early hours before dawn, but if starved for some time they may be active during the day. To obtain a blood meal the bed bug pierces the skin of the host and injects saliva. This saliva has anticoagulant properties which makes the blood flow more easily. Bed bugs ingest their meal rapidly only taking 5-10 minutes to engorge themselves. A blood meal is required at each of the five stages of nymphal development. Female bed bugs lay several eggs in small batches, which hatch in about 10 days. Adult bed bugs can live for approximately 6-12 months. Because of their size bed bugs can get into small cracks and crevices.

Humans can be injured by the bites or stings of many kinds of animals, including mammals such as dogs, cats, and fellow humans; arthropods such as spiders, bees, and wasps; snakes; and marine animals such as jellyfish and stingrays. Description
Mammals
Dogs

In the United States, where the dog population exceeds 50 million, dogs surpass all other mammals in the number of bites inflicted on humans. However, most dog-bite injuries are minor. A telephone survey of U.S. households conducted in 1994 led researchers to estimate that 3,737,000 nonmedically treated dog bites occurred in the United States that year, versus 757,000 that were medically treated. Studies also show that most dog bites are from pets or other dogs known to the victim, that males are more likely than females to be bitten, and that children face a greater risk than adults. Each year, about 10-20 Americansmostly children under 10 years oldare killed by dogs. Dog bites resulted in an estimated 334,000 emergency-room visits annually throughout the United States in 1992-94. More than half of the bites seen by emergency departments originated in the home. Children under 10 years old were more likely than older people to visit an emergency room for bite treatment, especially boys 5-9 years old. Children under 10 years old were also much more liable to be bitten on the face, neck, and head. Nearly all of the injuries suffered by the emergency-room patients were of "low severity," and most were treated and released without being admitted to hospital or sent to another facility.

Bites and Stings
In the animal kingdom there are many creatures that can bite or sting humans, pets, livestock or wildlife. Many of these bites or stings can cause pain, death or reactions to our systems that can be mild to extreme. This article cannot cover all scenarios, all bites, all stings delivered by every animal or insect on the planet. It will, however, attempt to describe the different problems encountered by humans and domestic animals that are caused by insects, reptiles and others.
Not all insects, reptiles, animals cause pain, sickness, allergic reactions or death. Even of those creatures that have the ability to bite or sting, not all have the ability to puncture human skin. All spiders can deliver toxins but very few can actually deliver these toxins deep enough through human skin to actually cause sickness or death. (See Black Widow Spiders Brown Recluse Spiders
Of those that can puncture or cut human skin, most are defending themselves or are looking for a blood meal. Chiggers, mosquitoes, fleas and ticks are examples of those that have mouthparts that enable them to puncture skin for feeding on blood. Horse Flies and Deer flies are examples of insects that have mouthparts that actually cut skin (instead of puncturing) to get to their food, which is blood. Among the creatures discussed will be spiders

Overview
Signs and Symptoms
  • Lump(s) or spot(s) on the skin that appear within minutes or up to 6 to 12 hours after the bite/sting. Swelling around the bite/sting. Itching and pain (sometimes severe) at the site of the bite/sting.
Self-Care Measures
  • Clean the wound. Apply an ice pack wrapped in a thin towel for up to 20 minutes at a time. If the stinger is visible, wash your hands and gently try to scrape the stinger out with your fingernail. Tweezers could leave some of the stinger behind or squeeze more toxins into your wound. For tick bites, apply petroleum jelly over the bite until the tick starts to smother and withdraws from the skin. For stings, rub a paste of meat tenderizer and water onto the site. Take an OTC analgesic for pain and inflammation. After the first 24 hours, you may also apply warm compresses. For itching, use an OTC oral or topical antihistamine and/or apply calamine lotion.

Insect Bites and Stings
Insects that typically cause more troublesome reactions are bees, wasps, hornets, jallow jackets and fire ants. Insects that generally cause milder reactions are mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, and some spiders. The reactions result from the injection of venom or other substance into the skin. The symptoms of mild reactions are itching or stinging sensation, and mild swelling. These symptoms disappear within a day or so. Some reactions are delayed, which can cause fever, painful joints, hives, and swollen glands. A small percentage of people develop severe reactions to insect venom. The symptoms for severe reactions are facial swelling, difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness, and shock. For mild reactions:
  • Move to a safe area to avoid more stings. Gently scrape out the stinger as soon as possible. Use a credit card or a fingernail. (This applies to bees only; yellow jackets, wasps and hornets don't lose their stingers.)

... Solutions A to Z Bites and Stings
Injuries from bites and stings range from trivial to fatal, depending upon the source of the bite and the child's response to it. For example, a bee sting is usually a minor, albeit painful, event. However, if the child is hypersensitive to bee venom, such a sting can result in a fatal anaphylactic response (see section on hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis). An animal or human bite not only can cause tissue damage, but it may also lead to a serious infection. Some bites, such as those of a tick or certain mosquitos, may be trivial themselves but can lead to serious illnesses such as Lyme disease, malaria or encephalitis if the insect is a vector (carrier) of the causative organism. HOW TO GIVE FIRST AID FOR ANIMAL BITES
HOW TO GIVE FIRST AID FOR HUMAN BITES
Human bites that have broken the skin are likely to cause infection if they are not treated because the human mouth is home to many types of microorganisms that can infect the wound. Clean the wound as described above, and consult your child's physician as soon as possible. Your child will probably need to be given antibiotics to ward off infection. HELPFUL TIPS
