Bipolar disorder and manic depression
Dr Trisha Macnair James Tighe There's no cure for bipolar disorder, but understanding the symptoms and what triggers an episode can help people to live a normal life.
In this article
Causes Symptoms Who's affected? Helping yourself ... Professional help
Causes
The exact causes of bipolar disorder aren't known, but an interaction of genes and environmental factors, such as personal traumas or stress, can influence symptoms. Unresolvable problems or emotional damage in childhood may play a part, possibly combined with genetic factors. The illness first tends to appear in adulthood but may occur earlier. Bipolar disorder is common in children, but they're often misdiagnosed. Affected people fluctuate between periods of intense depression or mania interspersed by periods of relative calm.
Symptoms
It's important to distinguish between the three elements of this condition: 1. depressive symptoms

Jane Pauley is candid about her struggle with bipolar disorder in her memoir "Skywriting."
WEB EXCLUSIVE By By Jennifer Barrett Newsweek July 19 - Over the years, Americans have become familiar with Jane Pauley's friendly face. The ebullient newswoman spent more than a decade on the "Today" show and cohosted "Dateline NBC" for 11 seasons. But until recently, few viewers knew that behind her cheerful public persona, Pauley was struggling privately with bipolar disorder. In her autobiography, "Skywriting," recently released in paperback by Ballantine Books, Pauley reveals that she was diagnosed in her late 40s with the mood disorder, which emerged after she was treated with steroids (for a bad case of hives) and antidepressants. Her symptoms got so bad in the spring of 2001, Pauley writes, that she spent three weeks in a New York psychiatric hospital. Through treatment with lithium and an antidepressant, Pauley is now able to keep her mood swings under control. And she is speaking out on behalf of millions of others who suffer from mental disordersoften secretly. Since the release of the hardcover version of her memoir last fall, Pauley has offered her services to major mental-health organizations and used her new daytime TV talk show to delve deeper into mental-health issues. Though NBC cancelled "The Jane Pauley Show" after its first season, the shows will continue to air through September. Meanwhile, the 54-year-old Pauley says she is enjoying her first summer off since she was 16. NEWSWEEK's Jennifer Barrett spoke with Pauley about how she dealt with her diagnosis and her efforts to raise awareness of mental disorders. Excerpts:

Treatments for heartburn and bipolar disorder
Editor's Note: Dr. Sanjay Gupta answers medical questions submitted by e-mail at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturdays on "Your Health." The questions and answers are available on CNN.com after the show. Q: What is the best treatment for heartburn? Rose Kassardjian in Whittier, California A: Well, Rose, according to WebMD, 20 percent of adult Americans have heartburn at least once a month. There are many different approaches to treating the feeling of burning, heat or pain in the upper abdomen and throat. For mild heartburn, simple lifestyle changes such as eating smaller meals, limiting spicy or acidic food intake, decreasing pressure on your stomach, losing weight and decreasing stress may help relieve heartburn. For more serious heartburn cases, try nonprescription antacids and acid reducers. Liquid or dissolving antacids usually work faster than tablet forms. Antacids do work faster than acid reducers, but their effect does not last more than one to two hours.

Bipolar Disorder June 2001 WHAT IS BIPOLAR DISORDER? Bipolar disorder, or manic-depression, is characterized by moods that swing between two opposite poles:
  • Periods of mania (mood elevation, including exaggerated euphoria, irritability, or both). For a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, only one episode of mood elevation needs to be reported.
  • Episodes of depression.
For details, see Box Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder Bipolar Disorder Categories Bipolar disorder is classified according to symptom severity as bipolar disorder I, bipolar disorder II, and cyclothymic disorder.
Bipolar Disorder Type I. Bipolar disorder type I is characterized by at least one manic episode, with or without major depression. With mania, either euphoria or irritability may mark the phase, and there are significant negative effects (such as sexual recklessness, excessive impulse shopping, sudden traveling) on a patients' social life, work, or both. Untreated mania lasts at least a week or results in hospitalization. Typically, depressive episodes tend to last six to 12 months if untreated. However, untreated manic episodes last three to six months.
Hypomania and Bipolar Disorder Type II.

Recognizing Depression and Its Symptoms
Depression is one of the symptoms associated with a range of mood disorders including bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, and major depression. Many of these disorders also include other symptoms such as mania, anxiety, and, on the extreme end, psychosis. Because depression is often used casually to describe sadness, recognizing true symptoms of depression is difficult. Only one of the many mood disorders, clinical depression affects 9.5 percent of adult Americans. Latest News Phone-Based Psychotherapy Helps Ease Depression

Bipolar Affective Disorder (Manic Depressive disorder) in Children and Adolescents
by James Chandler, MD, FRCPC Bipolar Affective Disorder (Manic Depressive disorder) in Children and Adolescents What is Bipolar Illness? Mania Hypomania ... In summary,
What is Bipolar Illness?
Table Of Contents The bipolar disorders are mood disorders. That means that amongst other things, there is a major change in mood. In bipolar disorders, this change in mood can be down, as in depression, or the opposite, mania. That is, a person can be inappropriately up. Some types of bipolar disorder have a lot of depression and only a little mania. Others have half and half. Still others seem to be both manic and depressed at the same time. Some people with bipolar disorders only have a few cycles of depression and mania. Others have many cycles a year. When bipolar illness is present in children and adolescents, it is more severe and harder to treat than when it occurs in adults. Pediatric Bipolar illness is one of the most severe conditions in pediatrics. In the milder forms, it can be disabling. In the severe forms, it can be lethal. The prognosis for cancers in pediatrics is better than many forms of bipolar illness. All bipolar disorders are a combination of mania with or without depression. So what is mania? Here are the official criteria:
