From the authors of the classic text, OVERCOMING DEPRESSION the first book about early-onset bipolar disorder. Bipolar disordermanic-depressionwas once thought to be rare in children. Now researchers are discovering that not only can bipolar disorder begin very early in life, it is much more common than ever imagined. Yet the illness is often misdiagnosed or overlooked . Why? Bipolar disorder manifests itself differently in children than in adults, and in children there is an overlap of symptoms with other childhood psychiatric disorders.

It is also sometimes referred to as manic depression because of the two extremes between which a sufferer is thrown. Friends and loved ones may not understand the disorder and the severe mood swings, causing a person to feel isolated and alone. Thankfully, researchers are discovering new things about this illness every day.

Introduction
I highly recommend the Expert Consensus Guidelines on Bipolar Disorder (2000) , chaired by Gary Sachs; the American Psychiatric Association's Bipolar Practice Guidelines are another very useful resource. The main difference between those documents and this one is that the others focus on treatments that have solid research documenting their efficacy, whereas I also include here treatment approaches that have smaller studies, case reports, or anecdotal evidence to support their use. My feeling is that there is value, too, in having access to knowledge of more speculative treatments, since some patients will not respond to a "classic" approach. I also provide more practical, hands-on information (eg about dosing, drug interactions, etc) than is offered in the more general guidelines. You are encouraged to read through the whole document or to browse sections of immediate interest. Bipolar Disorder in College Students
By Richard Boyum
UW-Eau Claire Counseling Services Bipolar Disorder, or Manic Depression, often begins to show itself in college-age students. Listed below are a number of factors relating to Bipolar Disorder. 1. Bipolar Disorder has a biogenetic basis. It can be mild, moderate, or severe. Social and psychological factors can trigger or compound existing Bipolar Disorder. 2. Major symptoms include, but are not limited to: alcohol, marijuana and drug abuse, explosive anger, fights or aggressive behavior, inappropriate sexual behavior (i.e. violation of others’ sexual boundaries, many different sexual partners), prolonged periods of sleeplessness, high levels of risky behavior that may result in injury or death, delusions of grandeur (i.e. believing you can do more than you can), ignoring normal responsibilities, excessive spending habits, extreme changes in eating patterns, suicidal thoughts, paranoia, and hallucinations. 3. Bipolar disorder in its early stages can be misdiagnosed as alcohol or drug dependency, anxiety disorders, schizoid-affective disorder, major depressive disorder, or personality disorders such as narcissistic personality disorder. Each of these disorders may, in fact, be a proper diagnosis but may share symptoms with Bipolar Disorder. 4. Treatment: Individuals with Bipolar Disorder benefit from a combination of medications and counseling. Lithium, anti-convulsants, and anti-depressants are usually the medications of choice. A psychiatrist can prescribe and monitor the medication. A university physician can help monitor medication. Counseling is also helpful in dealing with the behavioral aspects of this disorder. Self-acceptance, stress management, time management, goal-setting, and relationship concerns are some of the areas that students often need to discuss. The right medications and the amount of counseling needed is unique to each individual.

Child and Adolescent Bipolar Disorder:
A Review of the Past 10 Years
Barbara Geller, M.D. and Joan Luby, M.D. J Am Acad Child Adoles Psychiatry 36:1168-1176, 1997 Abstract Objective: To provide a review of the epidemiology, phenomenology, natural course, comorbidity, neurobiology, and treatment of child and adolescent bipolar disorder (BP) for the past 10 years. This review is provided to prepare applicants for recertification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Method: Literature from Medline and other searches for the past 10 years, earlier relevant articles, and the authors' experience and ongoing National Institute of Mental Health-funded project "Phenomenology and Course of Pediatric Bipolarity" were used. Results: Age-specific, developmental (child, adolescent, and adult) DSM-IV criteria manifestations; comorbidity and differential diagnoses; and episode and course features are provided. Included are age-specific examples of childhood grandiosity, hypersexuality, and delusions. Differential diagnoses (e.g. specific language disorders, sexual abuse, conduct disorder [CD], schizophrenia, substance abuse), suicidality, and BP-II are discussed. Conclusion: Available data strongly suggest that prepubertal onset BP is a nonepisodic, chronic, rapid cycling, mixed manic state that may be comorbid with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and CD or have features of ADHD and/or CD as initial manifestations. Systematic research on pediatric BP is in its infancy and will require ongoing and future studies to provide developmentally relevant diagnostic methods and treatment.

Bipolar News Was formerly and is still sometimes known by the name Manic Depressive Illness. Bipolar Disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by wide moodswings from the euphoria or agony of a manic high to the devastation of a debilitating depression.
The treatment for Bipolar Affective Disorder typically requires the long term use of psychiatric medications, notably lithium carbonate, and other mood stabilizers. One of the side effects of many psychiatric medications is weight gain. Bipolar World addresses this and many other topics.

Bipolar Disorder
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar Disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a serious medical illness that causes shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. more>>
Bipolar disorder causes dramatic mood swings from overly "high" and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, and then back again, often with periods of normal mood in between. Severe changes in energy and behavior go along with these changes in mood. The periods of highs and lows are called episodes of mania and depression. more>>
Treatment
Most people with bipolar disorder can achieve substantial stabilization of their mood swings and related symptoms over time with proper treatment. A strategy that combines medication and psychosocial treatment is optimal for managing the disorder over time.

I Love You Dad
On Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 13:09 PDT my father, H. Peter Karen left us. While driving along State Route 76 near Lake Henshaw with his wife Virginia their car struck a tree killing both people. My dad was a hard man to talk to and we never did get to be friends which is the tragedy here. My dad served in WWII operating a tank and went on to work for Solar International as a Design Engineer on cooling systems for turbine powered generators. He retired to Borrego Springs, California. I don't know much more about my dad than this and it makes me sad that I will now never have that chance to get to know my dad. So long dad, you will be missed.
The Pathways of Bipolar Disorder
Episodes of mania and depression typically recur throughout a person's lifetime. Between the episodes, most people with Bipolar Disorder are to some degree free of symptoms. It is estimated 33% of the people diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder display residual symptoms, and about 1% experience chronic unremitting symptoms despite treatment. The good news is that people with Bipolar Disorder can and do lead healthy and productive lives when the illness is effectively treated. The bad news is that without treatment, the effects of Bipolar Disorder tend to worsen. Over time the patient may suffer more frequent (more rapid-cycling) and severe manic and depressive episodes than those experienced when the illness first appeared. In most cases, proper treatment can help reduce the frequency and severity of episodes and can help people with bipolar disorder maintain good quality of life.
