Who Are We?
After the Diet™ is dedicated to helping humans overcome eating problems. We emphasize the word "human" because there is no such thing as perfect eating. When the pursuit of perfection becomes the focus of life, we lose the ability to be productive, loving, and involved in the world around us. We prefer to put the focus on a balance between healthy eating, exercise, and relationships with others.
Our Philosophy
We are more than a place to learn about food!

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is an illness involving one or more episodes of serious mania and depression. The illness causes a person’s mood to swing from excessively “high” and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, with periods of a normal mood in between. More than 2 million Americans suffer from bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and continues throughout life. It is often not recognized as an illness and people who have it may suffer needlessly for years. Bipolar disorder can be extremely distressing and disruptive for those who have this disease, their spouses, family members, friends and employers. Although there is no known cure, bipolar disorder is treatable, and recovery is possible. Individuals with bipolar disorder have successful relationships and meaningful jobs. The combination of medications and psychotherapy helps the vast majority of people return to productive, fulfilling lives.
“Bipolar disorder is treatable, and recovery is possible.”

There is an increase in frequency of bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depressive disorder) among patients with autoimmune thyroid problems. If you or someone in your family has manic or hypomanic episodes manifested by days or weeks of feeling hyperactive, excitable, and euphoric followed by days or weeks of depression with significant fatigue and sleep or appetite disturbances that may interfere with your normal activities, your physician may offer you medication to control your mood swings and treat your bipolar disorder. Your physician will likely measure your thyroid hormone within two to four weeks after starting Lithium. But if a psychiatrist starts your Lithium he or she may not know that you have a thyroid problem. Therefore you should be sure to tell the doctor that you do have a thyroid disorder and need your thyroid level checked to be sure there is no effect of the Lithium on thyroid hormone production.

Bipolar disorders are one of several medical conditions called depressive disorders. Depressive disorders affect the way a person's brain functions. Depressive disorders are widespread. In the United States alone, it's estimated that more than 17.4 million adults have a depressive disorder each year. That works out to about one out of every seven people, so there's a good chance that you or someone you know is dealing with a depressive disorder. Out of the total number of people with depressive disorders, it's thought that about 1% to 2% have bipolar disorder - a relatively small group. What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder goes by many names: manic depression, manic-depressive disorder, manic-depressive illness, bipolar mood disorder, and bipolar affective disorder are other medical terms for the same condition. Bipolar disorder is classified into four different types. These are Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymic Disorder, or Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Mental health experts separate the condition into these four types because the symptoms of bipolar disorder show up differently in different people. When doctors know what type a person has, they can tailor treatment to that person's specific needs. Bipolar disorder affects both men and women. For many people, the first symptoms show up in their early twenties. However, research has shown that the first episode of bipolar disorder is occurring earlier: The condition often shows up in adolescence, and even children can have the disorder.

Let me start by telling you that I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder two years ago. I have struggled with this illness longer than that. I am putting this website up in hopes that it may reach just one person and help them. This is not going to be some medical site that tells you exactly what bipolar disorder is. It is going to tell you how it effects a person's life and daily activities. I have been hospitalized three times for suicidal thoughts....never an attempt, just thoughts. However, I know so many people who have attempted and came very close to losing their lives due to this illness. That's why I feel that people should be more aware of their feelings and not just push them aside and say "oh, I'm just having a really bad day". I found that I was having "really bad days" quite often. They only kept getting worse. The worse they got, the worse I got. I eventually would stay in bed all the time. I didn't want to go anywhere or do anything. I didn't even want to see or talk to any of my friends. I ended up quitting my job. My life had become my bedroom. I would cry at the least little thing or laugh at the most inappropriate thing. I had turned into someone that I was definitely not. It took a while for anybody to figure out that I was in a position that I really needed help. Then they had to convince me that I needed help. Now that I look back on it, I know that if I hadn't gotten any help at all I would be dead.
