Bipolar Disorder "It seems as though my mind has slowed down and burned out to the point of being virtually useless. I [am] haunt[ed] with the total, the desperate hopelessness of it all." "Ideas are fast...all shyness disappears...people, things become intensely interesting...unbelievable feelings of ease, power, well-being...you can do anything." "The fast ideas become too fast and there are far too many...overwhelming confusion replaces clarity...everything is now against the grain...you are irritable, angry, uncontrollable, and trapped."
What is Bipolar Disorder?
These quotations describe bipolar disorder (BD), an illness characterized by extreme changes in mood, behavior and energy levels. Also called manic-depressive illness, BD affects approximately 1.2% of the population . Men and women are equally likely to develop BD. The disorder does tend to run in families and the rate of BD in identical twins is higher than that in fraternal (non-identical twins). Nevertheless, the specific genetic defect has not yet been identified and it is likely that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to BD. The first bipolar episode often occurs in adolescence or early adulthood and may be triggered by a traumatic event such as the death of a family member. In between episodes, many people are symptom-free, while others are never free of symptoms. Once properly diagnosed and treated, people with BD can lead productive lives.

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder Types of Bipolar Disorder Treatments Bipolar Disorder in Children ... Support Groups Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a treatable illness marked by extreme changes in mood, thought, energy and behavior. It is not a character flaw or a sign of personal weakness. Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depression because a person’s mood can alternate between the "poles" mania (highs) and depression (lows). This change in mood or "mood swing" can last for hours, days weeks or months. Bipolar disorder affects more than two million adult Americans. It usually begins in late adolescence (often appearing as depression during teen years) although it can start in early childhood or later in life. An equal number of men and women develop this illness (men tend to begin with a manic episode, women with a depressive episode) and it is found among all ages, races, ethnic groups and social classes. The illness tends to run in families and appears to have a genetic link. Like depression and other serious illnesses, bipolar disorder can also negatively affect spouses and partners, family members, friends and coworkers.

THE MOOD DISORDER QUESTIONNAIRE This questionnaire was developed to help you recognize the signs of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a complicated illness and no single questionnaire or test can be used to accurately diagnose this illness. Accurate diagnosis is obtained only through a thorough evaluation with a physician. This questionnaire is a good first step in discovering if you might have this illness but it is not meant to take the place of an evaluation by a physician or a mental health professional.
A positive result from this questionnaire suggests that you could benefit from a comprehensive mental health screening. However, regardless of the results of this survey, if you have concerns, contact your physician and/or a mental health professional.
DBSA does not endorse or recommend the use of any specific treatment plan or medication. For advice about specific treatments or medications, you should consult your physician and/or a mental health professional.
This questionnaire has been developed with an unrestricted educational grant from Abbott Laboratories.

Some may have mostly depression and others a combination of manic and depressive symptoms. Highs may alternate with lows. Research has improved the ability to diagnose Bipolar Disorder in children and teens. Bipolar Disorder can begin in childhood and during the teenage years, although it is usually diagnosed in adult life. The illness can affect anyone. However, if one or both parents have Bipolar Disorder, the chances are greater that their children may develop the disorder. Family history of drug or alcohol abuse also may be associated with greater risk for Bipolar Disorder. Manic symptoms include

Bipolar disorder rising among children
By Dr. Sanjay Gupta CNN Your Health (CNN) The cover of this week's TIME magazine profiles the explosion of juvenile bipolar disorder cases. The age for first the onset of bipolar disorder once known as manic depression has plummeted from 32 to 19. Bipolar disorder, a ferocious mental illness, seems to be showing up in kids at an increasing rate. As doctors look deeper into the condition and begin to understand its underlying causes, they are coming to the unsettling conclusion that large numbers of teens, children and even babies might also be suffering from the disease. Luckily, this comes at a time when the understanding and acceptance of medical illnesses is at an all-time high. Now here's a look at more health and medical news making headlines this week.

Child and Adolescent Bipolar Disorder
Can children and adolescents get bipolar disorder? Bipolar disorder can occur in children and adolescents and has been investigated by federally funded teams in children as young as age 6. How common is it in children and adolescents? Although once thought rare, caseloads of patients examined for federally funded studies have shown that approximately 7% of children seen at psychiatric facilities fit bipolar disorder using research standards. What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents? One of the biggest challenges has been to differentiate children with mania from those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Both groups of children present with irritability, hyperactivity and distractibility. So these symptoms are not useful for the diagnosis of mania because they also occur in ADHD. But, elated mood, grandiose behaviors, flight of ideas, decreased need for sleep and hypersexuality occur primarily in mania and are uncommon in ADHD. Below is a brief description of how to recognize these mania-specific symptoms in children. Elated children may laugh hysterically and act infectiously happy without any reason at home, school or in church. If someone who did not know them saw their behaviors, they would think the child was on his/her way to Disneyland. Parents and teachers often see this as "Jim Carey-like" behaviors.
