Welcome
Welcome to Cambridge Manic Depression Fellowship Self Help Group. We are one of over 100 local groups coming under the umbrella of the national charity, The Manic Depression Fellowship , now known as 'MDF The Bipolar Organisation'.
Our aim is to support people affected by manic depression (also known as bipolar affective disorder). That includes people with the diagnosis and their family and friends. All are equally welcome to join.
The group is run entirely by people affected in one way or another by manic depression. Our main strength is that only other people with MD really know what it is like to go through. Likewise, only a fellow carer appreciates the issues of looking after someone with this complex condition. You will find a wealth of knowledge and understanding as well as a place you can speak openly about your experiences Follow the links to find out more about us.

The Ness Foundation
The Ness Foundation (previously The Highland Psychiatric Research Foundation HPRF) is a charitable organisation, formed in 1998 from an internationally recognised research group and in 1999 became an associate institute of the UHI Millennium Institute. The Ness Foundation's mission:
  • To improve the quality of life of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders and other related conditions, by conducting research to discover safer, more effective diagnostics and treatments. To break down the stigma that surrounds such conditions, which is frequently more disabling than the illness itself, through the involvement of patients and caregivers and the wide dissemination of its research findings.

    Bipolar Disorder and African Americans
Every person, regardless of race or ethnicity, should seek help if they have a mental health problem or symptoms of a mental disorder.
    David Satcher, M.D.
Former U.S. Surgeon General An estimated 2.3 million Americans have bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness. A person with bipolar disorder can go from feeling very, very high (called mania ) to feeling very, very low (depression).  With proper treatment, people can control these mood swings and lead fulfilling lives. While the rate of bipolar disorder is the same among African Americans as it is among other Americans, African Americans are less likely to receive a diagnosis and, therefore, treatment for this illness. Most African Americans with bipolar disorder are going undiagnosed and untreated. It's hard to believe that just about a year ago this site went live on the World Wide Web. We want to thank all of you who've visited and provided important feedback. Your responses to the July newsletter on night-terrors, in particular, indicated that many children are suffering from these parasomnias and helped us assemble invaluable data. You've enriched our knowledge base about children with early-onset bipolar disorder. Your comments on the site also allow us to note emerging trends in prescribing practices. One of the most recent we've spotted is the treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents without mood stabilizers, but rather with one of the newer, "atypical" antipsychotic drugs such as olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (Seroquel), or risperidone (Risperdal), often as a stand-alone therapy. In other words, the only medication prescribed is one of these three newer antipsychotic drugs, whose properties include antimanic effects, and so-far, unproved mood-stabilization.
