Bipolar Disorder Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder Types of Bipolar Disorder Treatments Bipolar Disorder in Children ... Support Groups Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a treatable illness marked by extreme changes in mood, thought, energy and behavior. It is not a character flaw or a sign of personal weakness. Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depression because a person’s mood can alternate between the "poles" mania (highs) and depression (lows). This change in mood or "mood swing" can last for hours, days weeks or months. Bipolar disorder affects more than two million adult Americans. It usually begins in late adolescence (often appearing as depression during teen years) although it can start in early childhood or later in life. An equal number of men and women develop this illness (men tend to begin with a manic episode, women with a depressive episode) and it is found among all ages, races, ethnic groups and social classes. The illness tends to run in families and appears to have a genetic link. Like depression and other serious illnesses, bipolar disorder can also negatively affect spouses and partners, family members, friends and coworkers.

Bipolar Disorder "It seems as though my mind has slowed down and burned out to the point of being virtually useless. I [am] haunt[ed] with the total, the desperate hopelessness of it all." "Ideas are fast...all shyness disappears...people, things become intensely interesting...unbelievable feelings of ease, power, well-being...you can do anything." "The fast ideas become too fast and there are far too many...overwhelming confusion replaces clarity...everything is now against the grain...you are irritable, angry, uncontrollable, and trapped."
What is Bipolar Disorder?
These quotations describe bipolar disorder (BD), an illness characterized by extreme changes in mood, behavior and energy levels. Also called manic-depressive illness, BD affects approximately 1.2% of the population . Men and women are equally likely to develop BD. The disorder does tend to run in families and the rate of BD in identical twins is higher than that in fraternal (non-identical twins). Nevertheless, the specific genetic defect has not yet been identified and it is likely that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to BD. The first bipolar episode often occurs in adolescence or early adulthood and may be triggered by a traumatic event such as the death of a family member. In between episodes, many people are symptom-free, while others are never free of symptoms. Once properly diagnosed and treated, people with BD can lead productive lives.

Bipolar Disorder
by William T. Goldman, MD
Introduction: Why Bipolar Disorder is a problem.
Bipolar Disorder in children and adolescents has long been an overlooked health problem, and the subject of much professional debate. While it is fairly well known to the general public that "manic-depressive illness" is fairly common, affecting up to 1.0 to 1.5 % of the adult population at some point in life, it is not commonly recognized that bipolar illness in childhood and adolescence is also a major health problem: adolescents run a similar rate of risk as do adults, and a significant number more also report notable and disturbing subclinical levels of mood problems similar in quality to bipolar disorder. Related Articles Attention Deficit Disorder School Problems Depression Internet Links About Pediatrics ADHD Mental Health Information for Children Although considered rare, the exact rate of bipolar disorder in children remains unknown, although epidemiological studies are underway to determine this. Bipolar disorder in children and adolescents is arguably more significant of an issue than it is in adults. For example, if it is assumed that 1% of children and adolescents at any given time suffer from bipolar disorder, this naturally occurs during critical phases in child development, and not only can show itself with behaviors and feelings not typically viewed as part of a "depression" or "mania" but can interfere with the normal developmental processes of childhood. Add to this the diagnostic difficulties in distinguishing between disorders that have similar characteristics in children (such as delinquency, anxiety disorders, psychosis, ADHD, and learning disorders) and there is a significant number of children and adolescents both correctly diagnosed and misdiagnosed or undiagnosed.

    Bipolar Disorder in Children
filed under Childhood Bipolar Disorder There is a good article in this month's Contemporary Pediatrics magazine on "The importance of recognizing a child with bipolar disorder" A brief excerpt of the article suggests that "too often, confusion clouds the diagnosis of bipolar disorder in pediatric patients. To help ensure that these children get the treatment they desperately need, pediatricians must understand the unique way that this illness manifests in the young; Bipolar Disorder." Some key points that the article makes about Bipolar disorder in children include the following: * Bipolar disorder is a chronic disorder that often begins in childhood * Most children with bipolar disorder do not have a classic adult presentation, but rather a mixed-symptom state characterized by frequent, short periods of intense mood lability and irritability * Children and young adolescents with bipolar disorder have a high rate of relapse and a relatively poor outcome compared to those with adult-onset bipolar disorder * An early-onset mood disorder is often associated with an increased risk of other psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and suicide and with poor academic, work, and social functioning

    Bipolar Disorder

Research findings, clinical experience, and family accounts provide substantial evidence that bipolar disorder , also called manic-depressive illness, can occur in children and adolescents Bipolar disorder is difficult to recognize and diagnose in youth, however, because it does not fit precisely the symptom criteria established for adults, and because its symptoms can resemble or co-occur with those of other common childhood-onset mental disorders. In addition, symptoms of bipolar disorder may be initially mistaken for normal emotions and behaviors of children and adolescents. But unlike normal mood changes, bipolar disorder significantly impairs functioning in school, with peers, and at home with family. Better understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder in youth is urgently needed. In pursuit of this goal, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is conducting and supporting research on child and adolescent bipolar disorder
    A CAUTIONARY NOTE

Effective treatment depends on appropriate diagnosis of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents . There is some evidence that using antidepressant medication to treat depression in a person who has bipolar disorder may induce manic symptoms if it is taken without a mood stabilizer. In addition, using stimulant medications to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or ADHD-like symptoms in a child with bipolar disorder may worsen manic symptoms. While it can be hard to determine which young patients will become manic, there is a greater likelihood among children and adolescents who have a family history of bipolar disorder. If manic symptoms develop or markedly worsen during antidepressant or stimulant use, a physician should be consulted immediately, and diagnosis and treatment for bipolar disorder should be considered.

    • Bipolar disorder (also known as "bipolar illness" or "manic-depressive illness") is a treatable neurobiological brain disorder characterized by severe fluctuations in mood and activity level. Scientists believe that a predisposition to the disorder is inherited. The onset of illness can be triggered by trauma, but often appears with no identifiable cause. Symptoms can emerge at any time from infancy onward. Bipolar disorder is believed to occur in at least l-2% of the adolescent and adult population, with bipolar spectrum disorders (such as mild cycling and recurrent depression) believed to occur in 5-7%. 59% of adults with bipolar disorder surveyed by the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association in 1993 reported that symptoms of their illness appeared during or before adolescence. The time between onset of symptoms and proper treatment is often 8-10 years, longer for early-onset cases.

Bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depression) is a serious but treatable medical illness. It is a disorder of the brain marked by extreme changes in mood, energy, thinking and behavior. Symptoms may be present since infancy or early childhood, or may suddenly emerge in adolescence or adulthood. Until recently, a diagnosis of the disorder was rarely made in childhood . Bipolar disorder can skip generations and take different forms in different individuals. The small group of studies that have been done vary in the estimate of risk to a given individual:
    • For the general population, a conservative estimate of an individual's risk of having full-blown bipolar disorder is 1 percent. Disorders in the bipolar spectrum may affect 4-6%. When one parent has bipolar disorder, the risk to each child is l5-30%. When both parents have bipolar disorder, the risk increases to 50-75%. The risk in siblings and fraternal twins is 15-25%.

Kate Amatruda MFT, CST-T This course meets the qualifications for hours of continuing education By the time Sophie was 10, she had been kicked out of seven schools and seen four therapists. Her family suffered as she struggled with temper tantrums, mood swings, night terrors, oppositional behavior, social problems, and psychotic episodes. One week after her 11th birthday Sophie attempted suicide. Gary was the "teenager from hell", according to his family. His rages had escalated to the point at which the police were frequently called. Was Gary bipolar, an addict, or just out-of-control? This course will follow the treatment of Sophie and Gary and their families and look at how the assessment of bipolar disorder was made. We will explore how bipolar disorder impacts the lives of children and adolescents with this illness, as well as their families.
