Aromatherapy Bipolar disorder (also known as "bipolar illness" or "manic-depressive illness") is a treatable neurobiological brain disorder characterized by severe fluctuations in mood and activity level. It is believed to occur in at least 1-2 percent of the adolescent and adult population, with bipolar spectrum disorders (such as mild cycling and recurrent depression) believed to occur in 5-7 percent. It can occur at any time of life from early childhood onward. www.bpkids.org ), as many as one million or more children under 18 in the U.S. may have bipolar disorder (mostly undiagnosed and untreated). Children with bipolar disorder are at risk for school failure, substance abuse, and suicide. Children as young as 3 may talk of wanting to "make myself dead." Mania (the activated state) may include insomnia, hyperactivity, daredevil acts, elation and grandiose thinking. Racing thoughts, separation anxiety and intense temper tantrums (also called "rages" or "affective storms") can occur during depression or mania. Sometimes symptoms of both states occur together in mixed states (depressed mood with high energy) or in quick succession within a single day (called rapid cycling).

Weight Loss Judith Waite Allee , author of "Homeschooling on a Shoestring", says I'm no expert, but I've picked up a few hints from working at a Mental Health Association and from dealing with family members. I just want to point out that bi-polar disorder (also known as manic-depression) can be overlooked in children and may be misdiagnosed as ADHD , depression, and/or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) . Previously the psychiatric community believed that bi-polar had a later onset. That theory is changing, but slowly. Many (maybe most) of the adults diagnosed with bi-polar seem to go through multiple diagnoses before finding help, partly because bi-polar is difficult to diagnose, and partly because doctors seem to be leery about "labeling" a child with bi-polar. Part of the confusion is that kids with bipolar may have very different symptoms from adults. For example, they may cycle frequently in the same day.

Reclaiming your power during medication appointments with your psychiatrist CAUTION Using antidepressant medication to treat depression in a person who has bipolar disorder may induce manic symptoms if it is taken without a mood stabilizer. In addition, using stimulant medications to treat ADHD or ADHD-like symptoms in a child with bipolar disorder may worsen manic symptoms. While it can be hard to determine which young patients will become manic, there is a greater likelihood among children and adolescents who have a family history of bipolar disorder. If manic symptoms develop or markedly worsen during antidepressant or stimulant use, a physician should be consulted immediately, and diagnosis and treatment for bipolar disorder should be considered.

Some may have mostly depression and others a combination of manic and depressive symptoms. Highs may alternate with lows. Research has improved the ability to diagnose Bipolar Disorder in children and teens. Bipolar Disorder can begin in childhood and during the teenage years, although it is usually diagnosed in adult life. The illness can affect anyone. However, if one or both parents have Bipolar Disorder, the chances are greater that their children may develop the disorder. Family history of drug or alcohol abuse also may be associated with greater risk for Bipolar Disorder. Manic symptoms include
