Beryllium Exposure
Beryllium is a rare element that is extracted from the earth, refined and reduced to a very fine powder. Its properties of light weight, high tensile strength and ability to slow neutrons have made it useful in many industries. Common workplace forms of beryllium are beryllium oxide powder, beryllium ceramics and beryllium copper alloy. Because of the health dangers associated with beryllium exposure, the Atomic Energy Commission adopted limits for workplace beryllium exposure. These limits are extraordinarily low. They reflect the fact that there is no known safe level of beryllium exposure; even minimal exposures to the substance may cause chronic beryllium disease (also known as CBD or berylliosis) in susceptible individuals. Family members of individuals who work with beryllium can also develop chronic beryllium disease from exposure to dust that the worker brings home on his or her clothing.

WHAT IS BERYLLIUM?
Beryllium is a brittle, steel gray metal found as a component of coal, oil, certain rock minerals, volcanic dust and soil. Elemental beryllium is used in a wide variety of applications. Exposure to beryllium most often occurs in mining, extraction, and in the processing of alloy metals containing beryllium. The metal is used in the aerospace, nuclear and manufacturing industries.
WHAT IS BERYLLIUM DISEASE?
Beryllium disease is caused by inhaling beryllium particles, dust or fumes. Symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue, weight loss or loss of appetite, fever and sweating. Medical tests may reveal abnormal lung sounds, lung scars, decreased pulmonary function, granulomas (a nodular form of chronic inflammation) and an allergy to beryllium.
The chronic form of the disease, Chronic Beryllium Disease (“CBD”) is caused by an allergic reaction to beryllium. Depending on the severity of CBD, symptoms of pulmonary hypertension or respiratory failure may be present. CBD is incurable, usually irreversible and may result in death. The acute form of the disease, involving skin disease with poor wound healing and rash or wart-like bumps, is rarely seen and usually not nearly as serious as CBD.

What is Chronic Beryllium Disease?
Chronic beryllium disease (also called CBD) is an incurable lung disease caused by the inhalation of beryllium dust and fumes. It is characterized by inflammation in the lungs. The inflammation is a result of exposure to beryllium fumes, dusts or powder. It may develop slowly or rapidly. Lung cancer may also be caused by beryllium exposure. Chronic beryllium disease can develop as long as 30 years after a person was last exposed to beryllium. In most cases, the disease develops within 8-10 years after exposure. Extreme cases of Chronic beryllium disease can cause disability or death. Who gets Chronic Beryllium Disease? People whose work involves the manufacture of metallic beryllium, beryllium oxide ceramic, or alloys containing beryllium are at risk for developing chronic beryllium disease. Symptoms of Chronic Beryllium Disease? Some of the most common symptoms of Chronic Beryllium Disease are:
  • cough shortness of breath fatigue weight loss loss of appetite fever night sweats

Objectives: Chronic beryllium disease (CBD) shares many of its characteristics with sarcoidosis and is often treated with corticosteroids. There is limited available literature regarding the effect of long-term corticosteroid therapy on the natural history of CBD. Methods and materials: We conducted an observational retrospective study of six patients with CBD who received prolonged corticosteroid treatment with a mean pulmonary function test follow-up period of 10.1 years. Five of the six patients were exposed to beryllium at the same workplace. The diagnosis in four of the six cases was confirmed by a positive beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test result on blood or BAL fluid. Periodic pulmonary function tests were analyzed in relation to removal from beryllium exposure and treatment with corticosteroids.

Beryllium Disease
Beryllium is a lightweight metal that can cause lung disease. Two types of disorders have been described. Acute beryllium disease is an inflammation of the airways and lungs that occurs shortly after exposure to high concentrations of beryllium. Today, this disease would only be observed in an industrial accident. In contrast, chronic beryllium disease occurs in about 5% of persons exposed to beryllium, after exposures to low environmental levels of beryllium and does not cause symptoms until an average of 10 years after exposure. Some individuals may not develop symptoms until 40 years after their initial exposure to beryllium. If the beryllium exposure is not suspected, most individuals will be diagnosed as sarcoidosis - a disease with similar manifestations.

Berylliosis - Chronic Beryllium Disease
What is Berylliosis/Chronic Beryllium Disease? Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD) is characterized by the inflammation of the lungs caused by exposure to Beryllium fumes or dust. There are a number of occupations more afflicted with CBD. The industries in which Beryllium can be found include the following:
  • Electronics Atomic energy Laboratory work Metal working Ceramic manufacturing Extraction Dental work
Causes In 1979, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reported that exposure to Beryllium causes cancer in humans. This finding ultimately lead to the understanding that exposure to Beryllium is what causes CBD. When individuals inhale Beryllium dust or fumes, they may develop CBD. Symptoms CBD exists in two forms: acute and chronic. Although the incidences of CBD in the acute form are now rare, the disease is characterized by respiratory conditions such as pneumonia or bronchitis. In the chronic form, it takes a lot longer for symptoms to appear. An allergic reaction is usually the cause of this form of CBD. The following are the general symptoms associated with CBD:
  • Cough Shortness of breath, especially with activity

Beryllium and Chronic Beryllium Disease Beryllium
Beryllium is a metal that is found in nature, especially in beryl and bertrandite rock. It is extremely lightweight and hard, is a good conductor o electricity and heat, and is nonmagnetic. These properties make beryllium suitable for many industrial used, including: metalworking (pure beryllium, copper and aluminum alloys, jet break pads, aerospace components); ceramic manufacturing (semiconductor chips, ignition modules, crucibles, jet engine blades, rocket covers); electronic applications (transistors, heat sinks, x-ray windows); atomic energy applications (heat shields, nuclear reactors, nuclear weapons); laboratory work (research and development, metallurgy, chemistry); extraction (ore and scrap metal); and dental alloys (crowns, bridges, dental plates); and sporting goods (golf clubs, bicycle frames).
Exposure
Exposure happens when a person breathes in beryllium mists, dusts or fumes. Beryllium can then travel to the lungs where it can cause damage. Beryllium-related granulomas (non-cancerous tumors or growths) can also develop in other body tissues but these do not usually result in a loss of function.

Notice to Former Workers About Beryllium Disease Testing If you were an Ames Laboratory employee prior to the mid-1950s, you should be receiving a letter from the Department of Energy inviting you to have a blood test to determine if you are sensitized to beryllium. Beryllium was known to be used in Gilman Hall and in Wilhelm Hall on the Iowa State University campus as part of work conducted in support of the Manhattan Project and as post-war work to improve the purification and processing of uranium and thorium. Some people who may have been exposed to beryllium or beryllium compounds during that period may develop chronic beryllium disease, or CBD. People are exposed to beryllium through inhalation of beryllium mists, dusts or fumes. The disease affects the lungs, but can be treated. If you were a non-Ames Laboratory ISU employee working in Gilman Hall during this same time period, you also should be receiving a letter from the DOE. In addition, if you know of any former Ames Lab or ISU employees who may have been exposed to beryllium, please pass this information along to them. Please follow the instructions in the letter if you want to proceed with the blood test. If you have any questions, call the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education toll free at 1-866-812-6703. ORISE is operating the Former Beryllium Workers Medical Surveillance Program for DOE. You can visit the ORISE Web site at

57. Ames Laboratory Beryllium Factsheet
How many people exposed to beryllium contract beryllium disease? What are the symptoms, and is beryllium disease treatable?
http://www.external.ameslab.gov/BEfactsh.htm
Ames Laboratory Beryllium Factsheet What is beryllium? Beryllium is a hard, lightweight metal that is very strong and easy to shape. It has many industrial uses. Beryllium-copper alloys and beryllium-oxide ceramics are used in the electronic, nuclear and aerospace programs. Beryllium parts for nuclear weapons were manufactured and used at a number of Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. This manufacturing process continues at some laboratories today. What is the Former Beryllium Workers Medical Surveillance Program? How many DOE laboratories/facilities are involved in the program? The medical surveillance program is operating at more than 20 DOE sites, including Rocky Flats in Colorado, Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, Hanford in Washington, Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The Burlington Assembly Plant in Burlington, Iowa, was also known to have handled beryllium. Is the Ames Laboratory included in the list of sites where beryllium was handled? Yes. Beryllium was used at the Ames Laboratory in the 1940s and early 1950s. In the 1940s, it was used in the processes developed at the Laboratory for the production of highly pure uranium and thorium for the historic Manhattan Project. Ames Lab metallurgists also worked on a process to produce pure beryllium metal from beryllium fluoride. In the early 1950s, beryllium-oxide powder was used to produce beryllium shapes and crucibles. The toxicity of beryllium was not well known until after WWII when greater efforts were made to minimize exposure. Present-day buildings in which purification work would have occurred include Wilhelm Hall and Gilman Hall on the Iowa State University (ISU) campus.
