Tulp treated a young Dutchman who was brought back to Holland from the East Indies suffering from what the natives of the Indies called beriberi or "the lameness." Tulp's description of beriberi was a detailed one, but he had no clues that it was a deitary deficiency disease. This discovery came more than two hundred years later. Nicholaas Tulp (1593-1674) is best remembered as the central figure in Rembrandt's famous painting, "The Anatomy Lesson" (1632). Title List Next Title VUMC VU ...

    Beriberi
Definition: Beriberi is a vitamin deficiency disease caused by inadequate bodily stores of thiamine (vitamin B1). It can damage the heart and nervous system.
Alternative Names: Thiamine deficiency; Vitamin B1 deficiency
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: There are two major manifestations of thiamine deficiency: cardiovascular disease (wet beriberi) and nervous system disease ("dry beriberi" and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome). Both types are most often caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Symptoms of dry beriberi include pain, tingling, or loss of sensation in hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy), muscle wasting with loss of function or paralysis of the lower extremities, and potential brain damage and death. Wet beriberi is characterized by swelling, increased heart rate, lung congestion, and enlarged heart related to congestive heart failure. Beriberi has become rare in the United States because most foods are now vitamin-enriched, which means that a normal diet contains adequate amounts of thiamine.

    Beriberi
    Definition
Beriberi is a disease caused by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B ) that affects many systems of the body, including the muscles, heart, nerves, and digestive system. Beriberi literally means "I can't, I can't" in Singhalese, which reflects the crippling effect it has on its victims. It is common in parts of southeast Asia, where white rice is the main food. In the United States beriberi is primarily seen in people with chronic alcoholism Description
Beriberi puzzled medical experts for years as it ravaged people of all ages in Asia. Doctors thought it was caused by something in food. Not until the early 1900s did scientists discover that rice bran, the outer covering that was removed to create the polished white rice preferred by Asians, actually contained something that prevented the disease. Thiamine was the first vitamin identified. In the 1920s, extracts of rice polishings were used to treat the disease. In adults, there are different forms of beriberi, classified according to the body systems most affected. Dry beriberi involves the nervous system; wet beriberi affects the heart and circulation. Both types usually occur in the same patient, with one set of symptoms predominating.

    VITAMINS AND BERIBERI
    by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 567. Today, we talk about sick chickens and creativity. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. T he word beriberi comes from the Singhalese word for extreme weakness. Weakness is the first symptom of beriberi. After that, neuritis, edema, paralysis and heart failure! It's no fun. Beriberi became a great horror in colonial Asia during the nineteenth century. Finally Pasteur found that microbes cause disease. So, in 1886, the Dutch East India Company sent a team to Djakarta to find the offending beriberi germ. The team put blood, saliva, and urine under the microscope. They tried everything and found out nothing. Finally, after nine months, they left their youngest member in charge of a tiny permanent station. They gave up and went home. The young man was Christian Eijkman. For ten years he kept working on the problem. At one point, the chickens at the station came down with beriberi-like symptoms. They were sick for several months. Several even died. Then the rest recovered.

    Beriberi
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Beriberi is an ailment caused by a deficiency of vitamin thiamine ), the symptoms of which may include weight loss, emotional disturbances, impaired sensory perception, weakness, and periods of irregular heartbeat . The origin of the word is from Sinhalese (Srilankan) language meaning "I cannot, I cannot". Beriberi occurs in people whose staple diet consists mainly of polished white rice , which has little or no thiamine. Therefore the disease has been seen traditionally in people in Asian countries and in chronic alcoholics with impaired liver function. If a baby is fed the milk of a mother who suffers from a deficiency in thiamine, the child may develop beriberi. There are two forms of the disease: wet beriberi and dry beriberi. Wet beriberi affects the heart ; it is sometimes fatal, as it causes a combination of heart failure and weakening of the capillary walls, which causes the peripheral tissues to become waterlogged. Dry beriberi causes wasting and partial
