What is Berger's Disease? Berger's Disease is a kidney ailment. It's clinical name is IgA Nephropathy (IgA referring to the antibodies; Nephropathy for kidneys). I was diagnosed with it in 1991 following an acute kidney failure. It's not debilitating, but my condition is monitored through frequent blood tests and urinalysis. Because it is considered a relatively "new" condition, there was very little information available in 1991. It remains a lesser-known and seldom-diagnosed disease. Hopefully putting this information in my website will help others. The following is intended for research only. The websites where it originated are noted, along with links. From the National Kidney Foundation IgA Nephropathy
In many parts of the world, IgA nephropathy is the most common form of glomerulonephritis - a disease that damages the tiny filtering units of the kidney, called glomeruli. The damage caused by IgA nephropathy results from abnormal deposits of a protein called "IgA" in the glomeruli. One of the kidney's most important jobs is to filter toxic waste products from the blood, and the glomeruli play a key role in this process. As more glomeruli are damaged by the IgA protein, the kidney progressively loses its ability to clear wastes from the body. In some patients with IgA nephropathy, this loss of kidney function progresses to chronic kidney failure, which requires dialysis treatment or a kidney transplant to maintain life.

Berger's Disease
Glomerulonephritis associated with deposition of the immunoglobulin IgA in the glomerular mesangium. It is the same pathological process as occurs in Henoch-Schonlein purpura. Epidemiology
Prevalence
Commonest form of acute glomerulonephritis Risk Factors M:F 2:1 Presentation
Symptoms
Most commonly seen in children and young adults with episodes of gross haematuria . Often associated with URTI, less commonly with flu-like symptoms. Urine is red or dark brown 1-2 days after onset. Signs Asymptomatic microscopic haematuria found incidentally, also nephrotic syndrome with peripheral oedema, hypoalbuminaemia and proteinuria Investigations Serum IgA, renal biopsy. Associated Diseases Henoch-Schonlein purpura Management
Drugs
In significant proteinuria, ACE inhibitors or ARII blockers to reduce proteinuria and/or hypertension . Immunosuppressive therapy (prednisone/cyclophosphamide) should be considered. Long term fish oil supplementation has been shown to be beneficial.

Kidney Donor
February 2002 Q. My brother is in need of a kidney transplant because he is suffering from Bergers disease. Is it more likely that the donor would be from the family? Does it happen often? What exactly is looked at to match the donor and the recipient? A. It's great that family members are considering kidney donation to your brother. Blood-related relatives have a somewhat better chance of being a good match, but it is not a guarantee. Samples of blood are matched for blood type and other proteins to see the likelihood of a match or rejection between the donor and recipient, meaning how likely is it that the immune system of the recipient will reject the organ. Medications are usually given to suppress the immune response, and these may be needed for a long time. About 10,000 such operations are performed in the U.S. each year with a high success rate.
