These include normal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle as well as several types of benign lumps. What they have in common is that they are not cancer. Even among breast lumps that warrant a biopsy, some 80 percent prove to be benign. Each breast has 15 to 20 sections, called lobes, each with many smaller lobules. Benign breast disease is defined as breast lumps or abnormalities that have been examined and found not to contain cancer cells. It is estimated that each year in the USA alone, one million women are diagnosed with benign breast disease. For their study, Dr Lynn Hartmann, from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, and colleagues monitored more than 9000 women, between the ages of 18 and 85 years, who had received a diagnosis of benign breast disease from biopsies taken between 1967 and 1991. All benign breast samples were assigned to one of three categories – proliferative (fast growing), non-proliferative, or atypical (abnormal). In total, 30% of women had proliferative lumps, 67% had non-proliferative lumps and 4% had atypical lumps. Over an average 15-year follow-up period, 707 breast cancers developed among the women. After taking into account factors such as age and a family history of breast cancer, the researchers found that women with non-proliferative breast lumps – the most common type of benign breast disease – had no increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Breast tissue is sensitive to the normal hormonal cycles associated with the menstrual period. Breast changes, including fullness and tenderness, normally occur prior to the onset of the menstrual period and are caused by the hormonal fluctuations that occur late in the menstrual cycle. These symptoms usually subside spontaneously within 5-7 days of the onset of bleeding. Benign breast conditions refer to physical changes in the breast that are non-cancerous. The symptoms of benign conditions are often similar to those found in breast cancer and may cause great concern until evaluated and explained by a qualified health professional. Two of the most common benign breast conditions are Fibrocystic Breast Condition (FBC) and Fibroadenoma. Fibrocystic Breast Condition is the most common of the benign breast conditions. Fibrocystic breast changes occur in women between 20 and 50 years of age and subside with menopause. They are characterized by generalized tenderness and an uneven, bumpy texture caused by increased engorgement of the glands forming multiple small fluid-filled cysts clustered within the breast. Occasionally there is some spontaneous nipple discharge noted. Fibrocystic breast changes usually involve the entire breast but may be more severe in the upper, outer area of the breast. The symptoms may be present throughout the month but normally increase as the menstrual period approaches. It is estimated that 50% of American women may experience some fibrocystic breast changes at some time in their lives. FBC may affect one or both breasts and may change in severity from month to month.

One was a fibroadenoma, and the other was diagnosed as follows: Benign sclerosing lesion fibroadenoma usual ductal hyperplasia, moderate hyperplastic unfolded lobules apocrine adenosis negative for malignancy Comment:The differential diagnosis of this benign sclerosing lesion includes radial scar, complex sclerosing lesion and complex fibroadenoma. Management of radial scar is somewhat controversial. I am having trouble finding information on some of these termscan you enlighten me?
