Some Women May Be 400 Times More Likely To Get Breast Cancer
POSTED: 3:34 pm EDT July 20, 2005 UPDATED: 5:03 pm EDT July 20, 2005 A new study conducted by the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center shows that woman who have benign breast lumps may actually have a higher risk for breast cancer. According to the study, published by the New England Journal of Medicine, there are different types of benign lumps. If you have a lump removed, breast surgeon Anne Rosenberg says that you need to find out what kind of benign lump it is, because that will tell you your future risk for developing breast cancer. If you have one particular kind of benign lump, you could be 400 times more likely to get breast cancer. Pathologists who look at the tissue under the microscope will determine if it's cancerous or benign. If it is benign, a new study finds that the type of benign it is makes a big difference.

New research links some non-cancerous breast lumps to a slightly higher risk of breast cancer.
But there are many influences on breast cancer. The vast majority of women won't develop breast cancer as a result of benign breast lumps. Those findings appear in a study and related editorial in The New England Journal of Medicine. Read Web MD's "Learn How to do a Breast Self-Exam." Breast Lumps Are Common Many women feel lumps in their breasts, especially before their menstrual period. Still, it's important to have a doctor check out any breast lumps, get recommended screenings, and learn what's normal for your body. Mammography, ultrasound, and biopsies are tools doctors may use to identify the type of lump. Read Web MD's "Learn More About Breast Cancer Screening."

What is a benign breast lump?
Most breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous). All women have lumpy breasts and many lumps that women find are nodular or lumpy are areas of normal breast tissue which can become more prominent and lumpy just before a period. Lumpy breasts used to be called fibrocystic disease or fibroadenosis. It is now realised that lumpy breasts are not diseased breasts but are normal. There are some common causes of lumps:
  • fibroadenomas cysts.
  • Fibroadenomas
These lumps are not strictly speaking disease at all but rather a simple overgrowth of the lobules or the leaf of the breast tree. They are most common in women under the age of 30. They move freely within the breast and can be diagnosed by a combination of clinical examination, ultrasound and removing cells by needle aspiration.

If a woman has a fibroadenoma, it may not need to be removed. If left alone, at least one in three of these lumps gets smaller or disappears within two years. If she is worried about the lump or it gets bigger, then she can opt to have it removed.

Breast lumps: It's not always cancer
Breast lumps come in many forms: firm or fluid filled, soft or rubbery, big or small.
When a woman finds one, it can be frightening because it might mean cancer. However, in most cases the lump is benign or non-cancerous.
Benign breast conditions are not life-threatening and quite common. In fact, if every woman's breast tissue were examined under a microscope, nine out of 10 would have a benign condition.
    Fibrocystic changes
Fibrocystic changes are the most common causes of breast tenderness and lumps. They affect at least half of all women, most often during childbearing age. But women of any age may experience them. And the symptoms are the most pronouced the week before one's menstrual period begins.
Why fibrocystic changes happen isn't known for sure. But the hormone estrogen may play a role.
    Two kinds of lumps
Typically, women with fibrocystic changes experience breast tenderness or these kinds of lumps:

Benign breast lumps - cancer causing?
27 July 2005 Many women have lumpy breasts and some end up having a biopsy. Mammography generates biopsies too, although the majority are benign. But when you look back at women with breast cancer, a significant number have had biopsies for benign breast disease, which suggests that benign lumps may indicate increased cancer risk.
But to what extent and is it all benign lumps or just some? That’s what a 15-year follow-up of over 9,000 women in the United States sought to answer.
They did find an increased risk from benign breast disease but it depended on what the pathology showed. If the cells down the microscope looked normal and weren’t dividing more than usual and the woman had no family history, there was no added risk.
If the cells look normal but were dividing a bit more than usual then the risk went up from 5 women out of a hundred having a diagnosis of breast cancer over 15 years to ten women out of 100.
If the cells looked abnormal then the risk went up quite a lot from five women diagnosed over 15 years to 19 women out of 100.

The findings were reported in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

August 3, 2005 A new study confirms that most women with benign breast lumps have only a slightly increased risk of developing breast cancer over the next 15 years. New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers estimate that one in five women who have a mammogram over the next ten years will require a biopsy to further investigate a suspicious lump. Waiting for these biopsy results can be agonizing. Yet most of the time women are told they have benign breast disease, not cancer. To learn more about how frequently women with benign breast disease go on to develop breast cancer, Lynn Hartmann, MD, a professor of oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and colleagues followed 9087 women who had been diagnosed with benign breast disease at the Mayo Clinic for 15 years. To date, 707 of these women have developed breast cancer. The study found that, overall, women who are diagnosed with benign breast disease are 56 percent more likely to develop breast cancer during the next 15 years. This increased risk is similar to that seen in previous studies on benign breast disease and breast cancer risk.

    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Most women with breast lumps or other abnormalities that turn out to be noncancerous do not face a substantially greater risk of developing breast cancer later, especially if they have little family history of the disease, a study has found.
However, certain "benign" growths are not so harmless and may be precursors to cancer, it also found. Women with these may want to consider surgery or tamoxifen to lower their risk, doctors say.
The information could be useful to a large number of women. In a decade of having mammograms, one out of five women will have a biopsy, and most biopsies will reveal benign growths, two specialists wrote in an accompanying editorial.
Overall, such women are 56 percent more likely to develop cancer during the next 15 years, the study found the same conclusion previous ones reached. But the new work shows how much this risk varies from very little to more than four times normal depending on what the growths look like under the microscope.
