What is a benign breast lump?
Most breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous). All women have lumpy breasts and many lumps that women find are nodular or lumpy are areas of normal breast tissue which can become more prominent and lumpy just before a period.
Lumpy breasts used to be called fibrocystic disease or fibroadenosis. It is now realised that lumpy breasts are not diseased breasts but are normal.
There are some common causes of lumps:
  • fibroadenomas
    cysts.
Fibroadenomas
These lumps are not strictly speaking disease at all but rather a simple overgrowth of the lobules or the leaf of the breast tree. They are most common in women under the age of 30. They move freely within the breast and can be diagnosed by a combination of clinical examination

Identifying and closely monitoring these women could help save lives, the Mayo Clinic team believe. Although most non-cancerous breast lumps do not increase future risk of breast cancer, they found faster growing and more abnormal types did. This finding, in the New England Journal of Medicine, held even if there was no family history of breast cancer. Benign breast lumps The lifetime risk for breast cancer in women is one in nine, with over 38,000 new cases each year. The first sign may be a lump in the breast. However, often the lump is actually not cancerous, which doctors had thought meant there was no increased future risk of a malignant tumour. Our goal is to do a better job of risk prediction for women
Lead researcher Dr Lynn Hartmann The only way to tell for sure whether or not a lump is cancerous is to take a sample of cells, called a biopsy, and examine this in the lab.

Benign Breast Lumps
Benign breast lumps and other benign breast changes are common. Women experience various kinds of breast lumps and other breast changes. These changes include those that normally occur during the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and with aging, as well as several types of breast lumps and other changes. Most breast lumps and other changes are benign. Among breast conditions for which biopsies are often done, the results show that some 80 percent are not cancer. But only a doctor can tell for sure whether a condition is malignant (cancer) or benign (not cancer).

(CBS) The discovery of a lump in a woman's breast often turns out to be from something other than breast cancer, but it can be a sign that a woman is at higher risk of developing the disease. And, reports The Early Show medical correspondent Dr. Emily Senay , new research suggests that certain lumps carry higher risks than others.
She explains that mammograms are the best screening tool we have to detect breast cancer. Experts say that, while mammograms aren't a perfect way to spot breast cancer, they're the best method for detecting the disease when it's most treatable. The theory is, that in many cases, mammograms are able to find much smaller tumors much earlier than with breast self-exams, giving physicians the chance to treat them much earlier and more effectively.
Should a suspicious lump be found, doctors could perform a biopsy, in which a small sample of the suspect tissue is removed for analysis. In the majority of cases, the tissue turns out to be non-cancerous, or what's known as benign breast disease.

(CBS) But, Senay points out, two other types of benign tissue did come with an increased risk. Thirty percent of the women had benign but actively growing cells, and about four percent had atypical, or abnormal-looking cells that were actively growing. Even though they're considered benign, these cells are important to identify because they do elevate the risk of developing breast cancer. They need to be monitored closely and preventive measures could be considered.
After a woman gets a benign diagnosis from a breast biopsy, Senay says, age, family history and other risk factors help determine the best course of action. A woman needs to partner with her doctor to decide how to proceed. More frequent screening is often prescribed, even if the tissue is considered benign.
Highly abnormal benign growths are frequently removed as a precaution, and tamoxifen can also be prescribed to help prevent breast cancer. We still don't fully understand how and why breast cancer develops, and this study doesn't answer all the questions about the risks of benign lumps.

Risk factors can help you determine whether you need to take action to prevent future complications. Most women with breast lumps or other abnormalities that turn out to be non-cancerous do not face a substantially greater risk of developing breast cancer later, especially if they have little family history of the disease, a reassuring study found. However, certain "benign" growths are not so harmless and may be precursors to cancer, it also found. Women with these may want to consider surgery or tamoxifen to lower their risk, doctors say. The study was one of the largest to look at cancer risk according to the types of benign growths women had. It involved 9,087 women biopsied from 1967 to 1991 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The findings were reported in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. Click or Scroll for More Content
The information could be useful to a large number of women. In a decade of having mammograms, one out of five women will have a biopsy, and most biopsies will reveal benign growths, two specialists wrote in an accompanying editorial.

Overall, such women are 56 percent more likely to develop cancer during the next 15 years, the study found - the same conclusion previous ones reached. But the new work shows how much this risk varies - from very little to more than four times normal - depending on what the growths look like under the microscope.
