WHAT IS BATTEN DISEASE? Batten Disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that begins in childhood. Early symptoms of the disorder usually appear between the ages of 5 and 10 when parents or physicians may notice a previously normal child has begun to develop vision problems or seizures. In some cases the early signs are subtle, taking the form of personality and behavior changes, slow learning, clumsiness, or stumbling. Over time, affected children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures, and progressive loss of sight and motor skills. Eventually, children with Batten Disease is often fatal by the late teens and twenties Batten disease is named after the British pediatrician who first described it in 1903. Also known Spielmeyer-Vogt-Sjogren-Batten disease, it is the most common form of a group of disorders called Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (or NCLs). Although Batten disease is usually regarded as the juvenile form of NCL, some physicians use the term Batten disease to describe all forms of NCL

We founded the Nathan's Battle Foundation to aid in the development of therapies for this deadly disease. Through the foundations efforts we found a potential cure. In late 2000, we initiated a formal project with Cornell University's Weill Medical College to develop this life saving treatment and initiate a clinical trial.

It is understood that Charly's funeral will be on Friday, the day before her parents are due to host a charity Valentine's Ball at the Hilton Hotel in London. A number of celebrities - including Pauline Quirke and Samantha Janus - who support the Rhys Daniels Trust are expected to attend. Double tragedy The children's parents, Barry and Carmen Daniels, have campaigned tirelessly to help other sufferers of Batten's disease. Batten's Disease Monday 28 January 2002 Listen to this item The group of diseases known as Batten's disease are degenerative and genetic diseases that occur in both children and adults. The first sign that something is wrong is that a person has seizures and becomes unsteady on their feet. The illness leads to a progressive deterioration of the brain and nervous system and eventually death. There is a one in a million chance of carrying the defective gene, but if both parents are carriers, then the disease is likely to be passed on to their children. Jenni talks to Dr Ruth Williams from Great Ormond Street Hospital who works with families like the Shones, and also to Dr Chris Markland from the Batten's Disease support group. And Jill Hopkins talks to the Shone family both of whose daughters have the disease. Shone Family Website UK Batten's Support Group The BBC is not responsible for the content of external websites.
