They act as a national registry for NCL researchers throughout the world, maximize the opportunities of patients with Batten to lead as normal a life as possible, educate lay persons and professionals about the special needs of patients and their families, and provide a parent communication network for information and emotional support. The association has local chapters and a directory of these is available. They will provide assistance to an individual who wishes to start a local support group, and do parent-to-parent matching. The Batten Disease Support and Research Association publishes a quarterly newsletter

What is Batten Disease?
Batten Disease is named after the British pediatrician who first described it in 1903. Also known as Spielmeyer-Vogt-Sjogren-Batten Disease, it is the most common form of a group of disorders called Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (or NCLs). Although Batten Disease is usually regarded as the juvenile form of NCL, it has now become the term to encompass all forms of NCL. The forms of NCL are classified by age of onset have the same basic cause, progression and outcome but are all genetically different. Over time, affected children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures, and progressive loss of sight and motor skills. Eventually, children with Batten Disease/NCL become blind, bedridden, and unable to communicate and presently is always fatal. Batten Disease is not contagious or, at this time, preventable.

Article title: NINDS Batten Disease Information Page: NINDS Conditions: Batten Disease What is Batten Disease? Batten disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that begins in childhood. In some cases, the early signs are subtle, taking the form of personality and behavior changes, slow learning, clumsiness, or stumbling. Symptoms of Batten disease are linked to a buildup of substances called lipopigments in the body's tissues. Lipopigments are made up of fats and proteins. Because vision loss is often an early sign, Batten disease may be first suspected during an eye exam. Often, an eye specialist or other physician may refer the child to a neurologist. Diagnostic tests for Batten disease include blood or urine tests, skin or tissue sampling, an electroencephalogram (EEG), electrical studies of the eyes, and brain scans. Is there any treatment?

Introduction
Batten disease (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses) is an inherited disorder of the nervous system that usually manifests itself in childhood. Batten disease is named after the British paediatrician who first described it in 1903. It is one of a group of disorders called neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (or NCLs). Although Batten disease is the juvenile form of NCL, most doctors use the same term to describe all forms of NCL. Early symptoms of Batten disease (or NCL) usually appear in childhood when parents or doctors may notice a child begin to develop vision problems or seizures. In some cases the early signs are subtle, taking the form of personality and behaviour changes, slow learning, clumsiness or stumbling. Over time, affected children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures, and progressive loss of sight and motor skills. Children become totally disabled and eventually die.

The condition is named after the British paediatrician who first described it in 1903. Batten disease is relatively rare occurring in about one in 30,000 births. The illness leads to a progressive deterioration of the brain and nervous system. Although our understanding of Batten disease is improving all the time, there is at present no cure or treatment that has any significant impact on the inexorable decline in bodily functions and inevitable early death. A number of different forms of Batten disease have been identified. They are classified by age but are all genetically different.

They associated with the accumulation of an abnormal pigment in the brain called lipofuscin. These disorders can be associated with severe diseases including blindness, mental retardation, and early death. There are three main types, depending on the age it begins late infantile (Jansky-Bielschowsky), juvenile (Batten disease), and adult (Kufs or Parry's disease).

General Discussion Batten disease is the juvenile form of a group of progressive neurological diseases known as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL). It is characterized by accumulation of a fatty substance (lipopigment) in the brain as well as in tissue that does not contain nerve cells. This lipopigment storage disorder is inherited, and is marked by rapidly progressive vision failure (optic atrophy), and neurological disturbances, which may begin before eight years of age. Occurring mostly in families of Northern European Scandinavian ancestry, the disorder affects the brain and may cause both deterioration of intellect and neurological functions.
