The hair follicle describes an invagination of the epidermis into the underlying dermis. The proximal end of the follicle has an onion-shaped dilatation called the bulb, which is hollow at its base and envelopes the dermal papilla. The follicle has two layers, the dermal layer (fibrous tissue) and the epidermal layer. "We've always been told that you're born with a fixed number of hair follicles and that you can never grow them again in adult life," said Angela Christiano of Columbia University. "This study would suggest we now we have the capability to do that." Similar experiments on humans, however, are not likely in the near future. Researchers at the Howard Hughes Institute at the University of Chicago have managed to get hair follicles to form in the mature skin cells of mice. This is remarkable because follicle formation is a once-in-a-lifetime event that ordinarily happens only during early the earliest stages of human development. Once hair follicles are gone, they are not replaced. Normal hair: A non genetically-engineered mouse This latest research, published in the journal Cell, suggests a molecule called beta-catenin may be the key messenger that tells embryonic cells - cells that have yet to develop in specific directions - to become hair follicles. Some may be inherited, while others, such as parasites, can be contracted. Knowing which are serious and what to do if they occur can greatly improve a bird's comfort and even save its life. Some of the more common skin and feather disorders are discussed below. Others are covered in Common Skin and Feather Disorders Part II. Feather Cysts Feather cysts appear as oval or elongated swellings involving a single or several feather follicles. Although they may occur anywhere, they most commonly are found involving the primary feathers of the wings. A feather cyst occurs when a growing feather is unable to protrude through the skin and curls within the follicle. As the feather continues to grow, the mass enlarges and a cheesy exudative material composed of keratin accumulates. Although feather cysts may be seen in all species, the highest incidence is in Blue and Gold Macaws and certain breeds of canaries. It is thought these feather cysts may be the result of an inherited predisposition - as in certain species of canaries or acquired as a result of infection or trauma involving the feather follicle.
