Study links baldness, heart disease
Researchers say the more hair men lose, the greater their cardiac risk
By John Fauber
of the Journal Sentinel staff Last Updated: Jan. 24, 2000 So, a middle-aged man is talking to his doctor, and the doctor says, "You're bald." The patient says, "If you don't mind, I'd like a second opinion." The doctor says, "OK, you've got a bad heart, too." What sounds like a joke from a Rodney Dangerfield routine actually is one of the findings published today from the ongoing Physicians' Health Study, conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School. The study found that men with male pattern baldness may be at increased risk for heart disease. Published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a journal of the American Medical Association, the study analyzed baldness and heart disease among 22,071 men ages 40 to 84.

Male pattern baldness Hair follicle Alternative names Return to top Alopecia in men; Baldness - male; Hair loss in men Definition Return to top Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men. It usually follows a typical pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown, and is caused by hormones and genetic predisposition. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Hair grows about an inch every couple of months. Each hair grows for 2 to 6 years, remains at that length for a short period, then falls out. A new hair soon begins growing in its place. At any one time, about 85% of the hair on your head is in the growing phase and 15% is not. Each hair sits in a cavity in the skin called a follicle. Baldness in men occurs when the follicle shrinks over time, resulting in shorter and finer hair. The end result is a very small follicle with no hair inside. Ordinarily, hair should grow back. However, in men who are balding, the follicle fails to grow a new hair. Why this occurs is not well understood, but it is related to your genes and male sex hormones. Even though the follicles are small, they remain alive, suggesting the possibility of new growth. Symptoms Return to top The typical pattern of male baldness begins at the hairline. The hairline gradually recedes to form an "M" shape. The existing hair may become finer and shorter. The hair at the crown also begins to thin. Eventually the top of the hairline meets the thinned crown, leaving a horseshoe pattern of hair around the sides of the head.

Female-pattern baldness Alternative names Return to top Alopecia in women; Baldness - female; Hair loss in women; Androgenic alopecia in women Definition Return to top Female pattern baldness involves a typical pattern of loss of hair in women, caused by hormones, aging, and genetic predisposition. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Hair grows from its follicle at an average rate of about 1/2 inch per month. Each hair grows for 2 to 6 years, then rests, and then falls out. A new hair soon begins growing in its place. At any one time, about 85% of the hair is growing and 15% is resting. Baldness occurs when hair falls out but new hair does not grow in its place. The cause of the failure to grow new hair in female pattern baldness is not well understood, but it is associated with genetic predisposition, aging, and levels of endocrine hormones (particulary androgens, the male sex hormones).

Hair Loss Is Reversible
The reason for building Hairloss-reversible
I know firsthand the pain often experienced by people with hair loss. I'd like to share some of the knowledge I've gained over the years about this problem and its possible solutions. Some of the pages are technical; most are not. My suggestion is to read many of these pages so that you can gain a full understanding of the causes of the balding process. With this full understanding you'll be better able to make rational decisions about treatment options. My name is Tom Hagerty. I wrote all the pages on this Web site with the purpose of giving honest, up-to-date information about male pattern baldness and female diffuse thinning. This photo was taken a few days before my birthday - 72 years old. That's a big number but as you can see, my hair is still plentiful and naturally dark. The scalp exercises and a healthy diet may have had something to do with this. web hairloss-reversible.com

NetDoctor's Colin Brennan goes on the trail of a genuine cure for every young man's nightmare.
People have always been surprisingly gullible where their hair is concerned. Such was her vanity, Queen Victoria was driven to drink silver birch wine, made from the rising sap, because she believed it would cure her baldness. Even now in an image conscious age, when the masculine icon of the moment, footballer David Beckham, can voluntarily surrender his trademark dishevelled blond fringe for a shaven head, hair loss is refusing to become fashionable.
A heavy weight political writer went so far as to say that William Hague wouldn't get elected Prime Minister because of his baldness. Neil Kinnock, previously rejected for the post, agreed and he hasn't got much on top either. Jokes aside, consultant dermatologist Dr Andrew Messenger of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, told NetDoctor: 'Although the great majority of men learn to live with it, I think everybody would prefer not to be bald. For a very small number of men, it becomes a big issue.'

ATTENTION: DO NOT PURCHASE OR USE ANY HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THIS ENTIRE PAGE. Dear Friend, If you are looking for answers about hair loss, than you need this information. Hello, my name is David Katz, and perhaps like yourself, I have been through the hair loss industry jungle. I have searched through countless web pages for companies advertising the cure-all for hair loss, purchasing their products, and left with poor results and less money than I had before. A few months ago I decided that I had had enough, and started to do some major research on hair loss. What I did was study the reasons for hair loss and baldness in men and women, and convinced friends and family members with hair loss problems to purchase different products. All of my findings are organized in an easy to read format throughout this page. Here is what you will find on this site:
