Balanitis
What causes balanitis?
Balanitis is not a sexually transmitted disease. It is usually caused by irritants and an overgrowth of organisms that are normally present on the skin of the glans. These include bacteria and Candida yeast. Certain circumstances may make a male more susceptible to getting balanitis, these include:
  • Uncircumcised men: area under the foreskin is warm and moist, making it ideal conditions for the growth of organisms (usually Candida albicans ) that cause balanitis. Poor personal hygiene Diabetes Chemical irritants, e.g.

Objective - To evaluate clinical features and diagnostic investigations in patients with recurrent or unresponsive balanitis in order to institute rational management. Design - Forty three patients presenting to a genitourinary medicine clinic with recurrent or persistent balanitis were studied. All patients were asked whether they had a history of atopic illness and about their practice of genital washing. All patients were investigated by taking a swab specimen from the preputial area for bacterial and viral culture and 30 underwent biopsy of the affected skin. Follow up was between three and six months. Setting - Outpatient genitourinary medicine clinic, St. Mary's Hospital, London, UK

Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans: Conservative Treatment Options.
Introduction. Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans (BXO) and Lichen Sclerosus et Atrophicus (LSA) are two names for the same disease. BXO/LSA is a skin disease of unknown etiology. It occurs in both males and females. LSA is the name applied when the disease appears in a female or a male in other than the genital organs. BXO is the name traditionally used when the disease afflicts the male sexual organs. An older name is kraurosis glandii et praeputii penis This page is limited to information about the disease in males when it affects the genital organs. For information on the disease in females see Lichen Sclerosus BXO is a rare disease that affects only 6 of 1000 males (.6 of 1 percent). It can affect males of any age. The traditional treatment has been radical circumcision. However, many conservative treatment options are now available. Diagnosis. Freeman and Laymon (1941) provide a detailed classic description of the disease: BXO is usually distinguished by a ring of hardened tissue with a whitish color at the tip of the foreskin. The hardening of the tissue prevents retraction of the foreskin.

Is it common?
It is extremely common and is generally not serious though it can cause a great deal of concern to men and their partners.
Where does it come from?
There are a number of possible causes;
  • Poor hygiene. The foreskin should be withdrawn and then the area can be gently washed. This should be done daily to stop matter building up which can cause inflammation. Over keen hygiene. Washing too hard under the foreskin or too frequently causes irritation. Dermatitis is when the sensitive skin of the glans and foreskin becomes inflamed by the use of chemicals/products such as:
    • perfumed soaps and cosmetics washing powders (biological) and fabric softeners chemicals on hands transferred to penis when touching it condoms or their spermicidal lubricant sweat/urine collecting under the foreskin
Infection. Thrush (candida) is the most common cause here. This is a yeast germ that women often have though it is not easily passed on from women to men. The yeast germ however can collect under the foreskin. Other germs may also cause a balanitis.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Balanitis is an inflammation of the head of the penis. A form of the disease called balanoposthitis typically occurs in uncircumcised infants and boys.
Causes
In adult males, a sexually transmitted disease is often the culprit. In uncircumcised boys, the problem is typically the result of an infection brought on by poor hygiene. Especially if the foreskin is tight, secretions can accumulate under it, providing an environment in which germs can flourish. Laundry detergent from clothing can cause further irritation and swelling of the area.
Signs/Symptoms
The hallmarks of this ailment are soreness and swelling of the head of the penis. Swelling may draw the foreskin tight, and pus may form underneath it. Erections and urination are likely to be painful.
Care
To prevent this problem, uncircumcised boys should be taught to pull back the foreskin and wash the area thoroughly several times a week. If an infection develops, the doctor may prescribe an oral antibiotic or an antibacterial cream. Surgery to remove the foreskin (circumcision) may be required in some cases to prevent further attacks.

    Balanitis
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Balanitis is inflammation of the glans penis (Greek: balanos ). When the foreskin (or prepuce) is also affected, it is termed balanoposthitis Lack of aeration and irritation because of smegma and discharge surrounding the glans penis causes inflammation and edema.
    Contents
    • Etiology and epidemiology edit
      Etiology and epidemiology
Inflammation has many possible causes, including irritation by environmental substances, physical trauma, and infection by a wide variety of pathogens, including bacteria, virus, yeast, or fungus — each of which require a particular treatment (Edwards, 1996). edit
      Prevalence
Escala and Rickwood, in a 1989 examination of 100 cases of balanitis in childhood, concluded that the risk "in any individual, uncircumcised boy appears to be no greater than 4%." (Escala, 1989). ˜ster reported no balanitis in 9545 observations of uncircumcised Danish boys (Oster, 1968). Balanitis in boys still in nappies must be distinguished from the normal redness seen in boys caused by ammoniacal dermatitis (Simpson, 1998). edit
      Circumcision
Some studies indicate balanitis to be more common in uncircumcised boys (Fergusson, 1988; Herzog, 1986; Fakjian, 1990; Leber, 2005; Waskett, 2005), but Van Howe found balanitis only in circumcised boys (Van Howe, 1997). Van Howe's study has been criticised for the fact that few boys were uncircumcised (Waskett, 2005).
