bad breath (halitosis) can cause embarrassment, create social and psychologicalbarriers The majority of bad breath problems begin in the mouth.

Bad Breath (Halitosis) Bad breath (halitosis) can cause embarrassment, create social and psychological barriers , and even affect marriages. CAUSES: The majority of bad breath problems begin in the mouth.
  • Bad breath that is of oral cavity origin can be traced to a sulfur compound produced by bacteria. Dead and dying bacterial cells release this sulfur compound which gives the breath an unpleasant odor. Bacterial plaque and food debris accumulate on the back of the tongue. The tongue's surface is extremely rough and bacteria can accumulate easily in the cracks and crevices. Large amounts of sulfur compounds can be produced in this area, making it a frequent site of origin for bad breath. The tooth attracts bacteria containing plaque and if not cleaned regularly and thoroughly, this can result in large accumulations of bacteria which result in bad breath. People who have periodontitis often experience bad breath because of bacteria accumulating in areas that are not cleaned easily, such as deep pockets around teeth. Fortunately, treatment is very effective for people who have bad breath of mouth origin.

What causes bad breath?
Most bad breath (halitosis) comes from something in the mouth. Food sticks between your teeth, around the gums and on your tongue. If you don't brush and floss your teeth every day, this food can rot. The rotten bits of food cause a bad smell in your mouth. Rotten food also helps bacteria to grow in your mouth. This bacteria can cause gum disease, or gingivitis. Gingivitis also causes bad breath. The things you eat and drink affect your breath. Bad breath may also be a sign of a health problem. What can I do to prevent bad breath?
  • Brush your teeth at least 2 times every day, using a fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to brush along the gumline, as well as all tooth surfaces. Each time you brush your teeth, use your toothbrush to clean the surface of your tongue. Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove food from between your teeth. Eat more fruits and vegetables every day. Eat less meat.

How do you cure bad breath?
Since the most common cause of bad breath halitosis is the odorous waste products (volatile sulfur compounds) created by oral anaerobic bacteria, a significant portion of what a person needs to do so to improve the quality of their breath is to clean their mouth in a manner which helps to:
  • Minimize the amount of food available for these bacteria.
  • Minimize the total number of these bacteria that exist.
  • Minimize the availability of the types of environments in which these bacteria prefer to live.
  • Make any environment in which these bacteria do live less hospitable.
On a second front a person can:
  • Employ the use of products that can neutralize the odor causing volatile sulfur compounds themselves.
Reducing the food supply for the bacteria that cause bad breath.
Bad breath that is caused by oral bacteria is primarily produced by the odorous waste products these bacteria create as they digest proteins. This would imply that those persons with a vegetarian diet (diets high in fruit and vegetable consumption) will most likely have less of a problem with chronic bad breath than those who have diets high in protein rich foods such as meat.

Bad breath: What usually is the source of a person's bad breath?
Bad breath is usually caused by the bacteria that live in a person's mouth. For the majority of people (85 to 90% of those who have bad breath halitosis the single most frequent source of their breath odor problem is related to oral bacteria. Bacteria, just like people, go through their lives consuming foods and excreting wastes. The wastes of some oral bacteria are sulfur compounds and it is primarily these odoriferous wastes which usually lie at the root of a person's bad breath.
Have you ever smelled a rotten egg? The stink associated with rotten eggs is produced by the sulfur compound hydrogen sulfide. The smell emanating from feed lots and barnyards is one produced by the sulfur compound methyl mercaptan. The odor you assoicate with the ocean is due in part to the presence of dimethyl sulfide. All of these compounds are excreted as wastes by the bacteria that live in our mouths.
Together these compounds are commonly referred to as "volatile sulfur compounds" (VSC's). The term "volatile" describes the fact that these compounds evaporate readily, even at normal temperatures. The extreme volatility of VSC's explains how these compounds have the ability to offend those around us, instantly.

What causes bad breath?
Most people suffer from bad breath occasionally. However, if it becomes permanent you should consult your dentist. Most adults suffer from bad breath occasionally, although it may affect up to a quarter of adults on a regular basis.
Bad breath is usually brought on by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. However, there are several other possible causes that affect the airways, oesphagus and stomach that can also lead to bad breath.

, as they say, is better than no breath at all. And as George Orwell said in 'The Road to Wigan Pier', 'You can have affection for a murderer, but you cannot have an affection for a man whose breath stinks.' Nor a woman either, I hasten to add, in these sexually egalitarian times. Yet halitosis is a common and universal problem that can lead to a significant amount of social disharmony and embarrassment.
Factfile
Morning breath
Occasional bad breath
The commonest causes of occasional halitosis include smoking cigarettes or cigars, drinking alcohol or eating certain foods. Culprits that are often blamed include onions, garlic, curries, cured foods like salamis and cooked foods such as kippers. In addition to making the breath smell 'like an ashtray', smoking also reduces the flow of saliva in its own right and therefore further exacerbates the problem.
