Back injuries account for 28% of reported accidents in the mining sector. In light of this, the mining sector's joint sector-based association requested that the IRSST study the question of back disorders in its sector. The analysis of back injuries that occurred between January 1987 and October 1993 shows that the type of work is a more decisive factor in back injuries than individual factors such as age and experience. The workstations of operators of heavy machinery and labourers were identified as having a higher proportion of back injuries than those of miners, diamond diggers and mechanics. The handling of heavy loads and falls are the main causes of these injuries. This identification of risky occupations should help in the development of strategies aimed at eliminating back pain in Québec's mining sector.

In particular, existing epidemiological studies are scrutinized along three dimensions. These dimensions are : signs (clinical examinations, imaging), functions (functional performance, electromyographical measurements, disability) and symptoms (subjective perception of pain/problem). Due to managerial difficulties the project was reduced and only includes the evaluation of functions. The expected results of the concerted action are a review of existing knowledge and a consensus on functional tests to evaluate low back disorders. Reporting Date :

Low Back Disorders: Evidence-Based Prevention and Rehabilitation is intended to provide the best scientific evidence available on optimal prevention strategies and rehabilitation interventions for low back injury. Stuart McGill, a spine biomechanist and clinician, notes that this book is not about perpetuating clinical myths, but rather challenging them and proposing valid and justifiable alternatives related to the prevention and treatment of low back disorders.
This book comprises 14 chapters that are organized into 3 parts. Part I, which includes the first 6 chapters, provides a sound scientific foundation for the rest of the text. Part I includes chapters describing the book's biomechanically based methodological approach, epidemiological studies on low back disorders, and functional anatomy of the lumbar spine. The chapter on normal and

Author: McGill, Stuart Published: Low back disorders provides professionals with the foundation to make the best clinical decisions for building the best prevention and rehabilitation programmes. The author's unique research results quantify forces that specific movements and exercises impose on the low back, and identify commonly prescribed practices that are, in fact, contraindicated in promoting back health. Part I provides a solid foundation on how the back works and how it becomes injured; part II shows how this foundation may be used to build evidence-based prevention programmes; and part III focuses on improving rehabilitation techniques and quantification of spine stability.

Abstract: The overall aim of this thesis was to examine the association between job factors and the occurTence of musculoskeletal disorders, and in particular low back disorders, among female nursing personnel. The thesis is based on three separate projects. Two training programs for nursing personnel and one population-based case-referent study, called the MUSIC-Norrtälje study. The specific aim of the first study was to evaluate the implementation of a patient transfer technique at a hospital. According to the nurses who participated in the training program, the patient transfer technique was used and appreciated. During the study period, four yearly repeated surveys among the nurses indicated that psychological job strain was associated with back and neck/shoulder symptoms. High perceived physical exertion showed a consistent association with musculoskeletal symptoms. The prevalence of symptoms was rather stable, even though almost half of the nurses varied between reporting intensive ongoing musculoskeletal symptoms or not.
