Researchers [1] and experts [2] have associated back disorders with the following activities:
  • lifting
  • repeat bending at the waist
  • bending at the waist with twisting
  • long term bending at the waist
  • pushing/pulling
  • carrying
  • reaching
  • long term poor posture - sitting or standing
  • sitting while absorbing vibration through the body (as in truck driving) Personal Factors
Experts [2] have also associated personal characteristics with the development of back disorders that include:
  • loss of body flexibility - becoming stiff
  • poor physical condition - losing the strength and endurance to perform physical tasks without strain.

The Ergonomic Assessment of an Animal Care Facility Return Task characteristics and lower back disorders. In 1995, Kim and Chung measured fatigue arising from repetitive manual materials handling (MMH) tasks. They found more pronounced fatigue in asymmetric versus symmetric postures during task performance. Also, they found that muscles become fatigued more quickly during light load-high frequency tasks such as those performed at the Animal Care Facility than for heavy load-low frequency tasks. Related to this, Allread, Marras and Parnianpour (1996), reported that one-handed lifting results in back motion characteristics previously associated with lower back disorders (LDB). The weights used in this study also correspond well with those encountered at the Animal Care Facility, for instance 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg, about the weight of the shelter boxes in the pens) and 15 lbs (6.8 kg, about the weight of the an adult woodchuck and stovepipe shelter). In the breeding facility, asymmetric lifting occurs at least 100 times each day per worker. According to the research findings, one-handed lifting tasks such as, lifting woodchucks and their shelters and scooping feed from the barrels, increase the risk that employees will suffer from increased fatigue and lower back disorders. Allread, et al. also reported that in previous studies, manual materials handling was found to be the dominant factor in occupationally related LBD.

The only routinely published, national source of information about occupational injuries andillnesses in U.S. workers is the Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (ASOII) conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor. This survey is a random sample of about 250,000 private-sector establishments, but it excludes self-employedworkers, farms with fewer than 11 employees, private households, and all government agencies. The ASOII provides estimates of workplace injuries and illnesses from information that employers provide to BLS from their OSHA Form 200 log of recordable injuries and illnesses. BLS has conducted this annual survey since 1972 and has thus provided basic information about cases of occupational injury or illness that required more than first-aid (including medical treatment, restricted work activity, or days away from work). This information includes the total number of cases categorized on the OSHA Form 200 log as either an injury or an illness. The illness data are separated into six subcategories; the category that contains most (but not all) musculoskeletal conditions is disorders associated with repeated trauma . This illness category also includes

    WORK-RELATED BACK DISORDERS
    STATISTICS INFORMATION SHEET
    LAST UPDATED JANUARY 2000
INTRODUCTION Musculoskeletal disorders are by far the most common form of work-related ill-health problem in Great Britain. They can prove costly for the individual, the business and health service providers. This information sheet cites epidemiological evidence regarding the prevalence and economic impact of musculoskeletal disorders of the back. Much of the information for this fact sheet derives from two surveys conducted by HSE in 19902 and 19951. It is strongly recommended that those interested in the data presented below read the two publications from these surveys that will provide further information of relevance and put the data in context. Since the publication of the results from the 1995 survey revisions have been made to the number of working days lost due to illnesses caused by work. An information sheet3 giving detailed information of the revised data can be obtained from HSE's Epidemiology and Medical Statistics Unit. Details of other sources of statistics quoted in this fact sheet can be found in the latest edition of HSE's publication: "Health and Safety Statistics"5.

    Summary
    • Results from the latest survey of self-reported work-related illness (SWI03/04) indicate that in 2003/04 an estimated prevalence of 468 000 people in Great Britain suffered, in their opinion, from a musculoskeletal disorder mainly affecting the back that was caused or made worse by their current or past work. This equates to 1100 per 100 000 (1.1%) of people who have ever worked in Great Britain. SWI03/04 estimated that 74 000 people ever employed, first became aware of their work-related musculoskeletal disorder mainly affecting the back in the previous 12 months. In terms of people employed in the last 12 months, this equates to an estimated incidence rate of 230 per 100 000 (0.23%). Each year thousands of new cases of musculoskeletal disorders require some level of specialist intervention. An estimated 2 027cases of spine/back disorders were seen for the first time in 2004 by rheumatologists and occupational physicians reporting to the MOSS (Musculoskeletal Occupational Surveillance Scheme) and OPRA (Occupational Physicians Reporting Activity) surveillance schemes.

DEVELOPMENT AND DISTRIBUTION OF EUROPEAN GUIDELINES FOR THE TREATMENT OF BACK DISORDERS
    Background.
Back disorders represent a major problem for industrialized countries, both because they are so widespread and because of their cost in both labor and health terms. Furthermore, available studies show that practicing physicians do not tend to consider the results of scientific studies when they decide on the recommendations they make to their patients with back problems. This ends up meaning that a large number of patients are being subjected to inadequate diagnostic procedures and treatments or ones that are not suited to their specific case. Furthermore, it means that these patients generate a greater cost than is necessary. This problem affects most European countries equally, even though initiatives have been made in some to confront it in a rational fashion. To this end, the Kovacs Foundation has promoted the elaboration of a set of
