Obesity was not much of a problem in the past because for most of human history there was rarely much surplus food. The same is the case with salt cravings where, again, in the past there was usually not enough sodium in the foods our ancestors had to eat. Similarly, drug and alcohol addiction are obviously the result of the lack of human adaptiveness to substances they rarely encountered in the past. However, alcoholism susceptibility is less frequent among Mediterranean populations that have been growing grapes and making wine for centuries. So there are human populations that have developed at least partial genetic adaptations to ethanol consumption. Some scientists have been advancing theories to explain some auto-immune disorders as being the result of lack of exposure to diseases that used to be common in the human past. Among the diseases suspected as being a consequence of lack of exposure to diseases are the painful digestive tract disorders inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD) and Crohn's Disease.

My 16-year-old son seems plagued with autoimmune diseases. At age 13 he was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, then with chronic urticaria, and now with Hashimoto's thyroid disease. He is on many medications. Is there any other way we can help him to manage all of this?

I’m sorry to hear that your son has been challenged by so many autoimmune conditions. Myasthenia gravis is a chronic neuromuscular disease that causes muscle weakness that worsens during activity and improves with rest. The disorder can affect facial muscles (including eye and eyelid movement), chewing, talking, and swallowing. It occurs when the immune system produces antibodies that attack or destroy receptors for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Like other autoimmune diseases, myasthenia gravis can go into remission temporarily, sometimes for long periods of time. Urticaria is the medical term for hives, which can become chronic. Hives develop when the body releases, histamine, a regulatory chemical that dilates blood vessel walls and allows fluids to leak into surrounding tissues, which causes swelling and itching. This can happen as a result of an allergic reaction or might be an immune system reaction to components of skin.

Understanding Autoimmune Disorders
May, 5 2003 9:29 Alterations to a key gene may predispose some people to develop autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, according to a paper published online by Nature this week. John A. Todd and Linda S. Wicker of the University of Cambridge, Wellcome Trust/MRC Building, Cambridge, UK, and colleagues have identified a variety of changes to the CTLA4 gene. The altered versions of the gene are found in patients with Graves' disease, autoimmune hypothyroidism and type 1 diabetes, as well as in the mouse model of type 1 diabetes. Under normal circumstances the gene codes for a vital molecule that regulates the immune system. Autoimmune disorders affect 5% of the population, yet the genes and mechanisms involved remain obscure. The research suggests that a subtle inherited variation in the genetic code may place certain individuals at increased risk of developing the conditions. CONTACT: John A. Todd

Many patients are diagnosed with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, but they're never told if theirs is an autoimmune disorder. Unfortunately, many doctors never even bother to confirm or disprove one's autoimmune thyroid status, and this is where medicine fails us...since there's always the possibility that one's particular form of thyroiditis is caused by an infection or a genetic aberration. In these instances, treatment is totally different. Furthermore, when the autoimmune nature of any disease is discounted, general suggestions for treating autoimmune disorders are ignored. An online National Institute of Health publication advises that doctors should inform patients of the specific environmental triggers that can precipitate or exacerbate (worsen) the symptoms of their particular autoimmune disease. But few us are told that our thyroid conditions are of an autoimmune nature. Even fewer are told that, for us, iodine is an environmental trigger.

Syntonix uses its Transceptor Fc construct technology to create new analogs of existing drugs to treat autoimmune disorders. Syntonix Pharmaceuticals has entered into an agreement with Serono (virt-x: SEO and NYSE: SRA) under which Serono has licensed worldwide exclusive rights to Syntonix’ Transceptor™ and SynFusion™ technologies for the development and commercialization of interferon-beta:Fc products. Syntonix’ technologies may enable the development of an interferon-beta therapy for multiple sclerosis (MS) that can be administered by inhalation. It has been demonstrated that certain Fc constructs can facilitate transport of therapeutic proteins across the lung epithelium through neonatal Fc receptor-mediated uptake. In in vivo experiments conducted by Syntonix and Serono, a proprietary interferon-beta:Fc molecule produced by Syntonix exhibited pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties that justify further development.
Syntonix is also collaborating with Dyax Corp (NASDAQ: DYAX) to discover and develop novel therapeutic antibodies to treat autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. During the discovery phase of the collaboration, Syntonix will provide proprietary assays and reagents as well as certain preclinical development work, and Dyax will utilize its proprietary antibody libraries to screen for clinical candidates. Upon successful completion of discovery work, the two companies will have the option to advance the antibody lead(s) into clinical development under the terms of a global co-development and co-commercialization agreement.

Autoimmune Disorders Among Top 10 Killers of Women
Autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis rheumatoid arthritis , and type 1 diabetes are among the leading causes of death among American women under age 65, according to a new study. However, the significance of autoimmune diseases in mortality rates has gone unrecognized since they are not classified in the same way as other conditions such as heart disease or cancer. Many autoimmune disorders are not in the list, prepared by the National Center for Health Statistics, that physicians use when recording cause of death. Researchers examined national mortality data for 1995 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), looking for mention of 24 different autoimmune disorders, and found that, when grouped together, these disorders accounted for a very large portion of the deaths, putting it among the top 10 causes of death.

    Autoimmunity and the Inner Ear
    By P.J. Haybach, R.N., M.S.
If you're wondering what autoimmunity is and how it's connected to vestibular disorders, read on, and your general questions should be answered. Parts of the immune system, working constantly and behind the scenes, patrol the body in search of foreign invaders and relentlessly attack them once found. On rare occasion, in some people the immune system runs amok, identifies the body itself as foreign, and launches a lethal attack. This self-attack is referred to as an autoimmune reaction. The immune system can attack just the ear, attack the ear and some other body part like the eye, or attack the entire body (including the ear). An autoimmune reaction also creates debris. Even if the ear is not being directly attacked, it can end up with debris transported from distant locations and deposited by the circulation. This debris in the ear can cause problems. Some autoimmune disorders that can affect the ear include Cogan's syndrome, relapsing polychondritis, polyarteritis nodosa, Wegener's granulomatosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ulcerative colitis, Sjogren's syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis. Hearing loss has been viewed historically as the main inner ear effect of an autoimmune problem, but the vestibular system can also be attacked. Several factors determine the type of vestibular symptoms that may be experienced. Those factors include the speed with which the vestibular loss occurred, the degree of loss, whether one side or both sides are affected, and whether the damage has triggered a problem with fluctuating function (for example, if endolymphatic hydrops developed from the autoimmune reaction). The symptoms of autoimmune problems can be similar, even indistinguishable, from other vestibular disorders.

    Autoimmune disorders
Definition: Disorders caused by an immune response against the body's own tissues.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The immune system protects the body from potentially harmful substances (antigens) such as microorganisms, toxins cancer cells, and foreign blood or tissues from another person or species. Antigens are destroyed by the immune response, which includes production of antibodies (molecules that attach to the antigen and make it more susceptible to destruction) and sensitized lymphocytes (specialized white blood cells that recognize and destroy particular antigens).
Immune system disorders occur when the immune response is inappropriate, excessive, or lacking. Autoimmune disorders develop when the immune system destroys normal body tissues. This is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction similar to allergies , where the immune system reacts to a substance that it normally would ignore. In allergies, the immune system reacts to an external substance that would normally be harmless. With autoimmune disorders, the immune system reacts to normal "self" body tissues.
Normally, the immune system is capable of differentiating "self" from "non-self" tissue. Some immune system cells (lymphocytes) become sensitized against "self" tissue cells, but these faulty lymphocytes are usually controlled (suppressed) by other lymphocytes. Autoimmune disorders occur when the normal control process is disrupted. They may also occur if normal body tissue is altered so that it is no longer recognized as "self." The mechanisms that cause disrupted control or tissue changes are not known. One theory holds that various microorganisms and drugs may trigger some of these changes, particularly in people with a genetic predisposition to an autoimmune disorder.

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE IN WOMEN - THE FACTS
    Autoimmune Disease
The term "autoimmune disease" refers to a varied group of more than 80 serious, chronic illnesses that involve almost every human organ system. It includes diseases of the nervous, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems as well as skin and other connective tissues, eyes blood, and blood vessel. In all of these diseases, the underlying problem is similarthe body's immune system becomes misdirected, attacking the very organs it was designed to protect. Table I

cytopenic purpura A WOMEN'S ISSUE For reasons we do not understand, about 75 percent of autoimmune diseases occur in women, most frequently during the childbearing years. Table I(left) lists the female-to-male ratios in autoimmune diseases. Hormones are thought to play a role, because some autoimmune illnesses occur more frequently after menopause, others suddenly improve during pregnancy, with flare-ups occurring after delivery, while still others will get worse during pregnancy. Autoimmune diseases also seem to have a genetic component, but, mysteriously, they can cluster in families as different illnesses. For example, a mother may have lupus erythematosus; her daughter, diabetes; her grandmother, rheumatoid arthritis. Research is shedding light on genetic as well as hormonal and environmental risk factors that contribute to the causes of these diseases.
