Allergies
Index to this page Immunologists, as well as the general public, use the term allergy in several different ways. I shall define it thus: An allergy is a harmful immune response elicited by an antigen that is not itself intrinsically harmful. Examples:
  • The windblown pollen released by orchard grass has no effect on me but produces a violent attack of hay fever (known to physicians as allergic rhinitis ) in my wife.
  • She, on the other hand, can safely handle the leaves of poison ivy while if I do so, I break out in a massive skin rash a day or two later.
Antigens that trigger allergies are often called allergens
Four different immune mechanisms can result in allergic responses.
1. Immediate Hypersensitivities.
These occur quickly after exposure to the allergen. They are usually mediated by antibodies of the IgE class. Examples: Go to discussion
2. Antibody-Mediated Cytotoxicity
Cell damage caused by antibodies directed against cell surface antigens. Hence a form of

Biologic Agents and the Treatment of Autoimmune Disorders
by Mary Calvagna, MS The immune system plays a vital role in keeping the body healthy. It is made up of a complex network of cells and organs that work together to defend the body against foreign invaders. Biologic agents use the bodys own immune system to help fight disease. While traditional pharmaceuticals are made up of chemicals, biologic agents are actually developed using proteins from living cells. They are designed to act on different parts of the inflammatory system in order to evoke specific, targeted effects.
Recombinant DNA Technology
Many biologic agents are created using recombinant (r) DNA technology. rDNA technology starts with DNA, which houses all the genetic information that is needed to create a life. It is made up of two information-rich strands that coil around each other, creating its familiar double helix shape. rDNA is a DNA molecule that is produced in a laboratory by combining one strand of one DNA with another strand from a different DNA, thereby creating a new strand of DNA. In medicine, rDNA can be used to develop drugs or vaccines and to reproduce important human hormones and proteins.
Biologic Agents and the Treatment of Autoimmune Disorders
In autoimmune disorders, the immune system is overactive and destroys not only foreign substances, but also the bodys own tissues. The goal of biologic therapy is to slow or block specific components of the immune system and halt tissue destruction.

This process permits the propagation of immune cells that can detect a wide variety of foreign particles, while ignoring "self" compounds. When this selectivity is compromised, the immune system can incorrectly destroy compounds of the body it was designed to protect. This leads to an array of autoimmune disorders. A few notable examples of diseases associated with autoimmune dysfunction include multiple sclerosis, rheumatic fever, myasthenia gravis, and diabetes mellitus.

Sponsored by: National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Information provided by: National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Purpose Bacteria carry substances on their surface called antigens. When antigens come into contact with the right kinds of cells in the body an immune reaction is caused. This reaction is often the symptoms of sickness that a patient feels. In order for the body to fight off the attack of antigens, it creates substances called antibodies. Antibodies counter the action of antigens and make the bacteria harmless. However, the immune system must learn how to make the right antibodies for the right antigens. Sometimes the body creates antibodies that confuse normal tissues as foreign and attack them. This is called an autoimmune reaction and sometimes occurs when the body is exposed to certain bacteria. One bacteria known for causing autoimmune reactions is Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus (GABHS). This bacteria often causes throat infections commonly known as "strep throat". Some researchers believe that the autoimmune reaction associated with strep throat infections may cause neuropsychiatric disorders, like obsessive-compulsive disorder and/or tic disorder in children. As a result, each time a child with one of these disorders experiences an infection with GABHS his/her symptoms can reoccur or worsen. Researchers believe that by giving patients a certain antibiotic, they can prevent GABHS infection and thus prevent the return of symptoms.

Taking Charge of
Autoimmune Disorders
Your immune system is there to keep your body safe from injury and invasion. It is on duty all the time. It is a complex system operating at all levels from the molecular to the systemic, always with the inborn goal of maintaining your body. In autoimmune disease, something goes wrong, and the immune system begins to attack parts of you. In multiple sclerosis, your nerve sheath, or myelin, is attacked. In psoriasis, your skin is attacked, and in more severe cases, your joints as well. In lupus, your internal organs are attacked. It is frightening to you and frustrating to your physicians who must prescribe medications with known harmful side effects to help control your symptoms by interfering with your immune system. Why, you wonder, have you opened a psychology web site and found an article on autoimmune disorders? Because there is an intimate link between the immune system and the nervous system. (Solomon) Both have memory, both react to stress, and both operate via peptides as information transmitters. When the nervous system is "out of whack", something that is commonly labeled "mental illness' results. If the nervous system is overactive, anxiety may result. If it is underactive, the result might be depression. When parts of the mind are not operating properly, people often experience the frightening process called psychosis, where reality is not what it seems to them. A variety of problems in adapting to life result from psychological or physiological problems in the nervous system.

What Are They?
Arthritis is a general term meaning inflammation, which causes pain in one or more joints of the body. Some forms of arthritis are "autoimmune". This occurs when the body's immune system cannot distinguish between itself and foreign substances, and ends up attacking its own tissues. This attack can take the form of severe, painful and destructive inflammation, such as happens in rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, vasculitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, and many other arthritis-related disorders. There are also several non-arthritic autoimmune disorders, such as juvenile diabetes, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis and Addison's Disease. An autoimmune reaction occurs when the body mistakes its own tissue for foreign tissue. Certain substances prompt the immune system to produce antibodies that attack the otherwise normal tissue in an attempt to destroy it. Autoimmune reactions can range from the mildly annoying to life threatening. For instance, the body is capable of attacking all of its organs including the kidneys lungs heart , and brain . Conditions such as Lupus , Graves' disease, and rheumatoid arthritis are well known autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune Disorders: What Are They And Do I Have One?
by Karyn Moran Holton, Suite101.com
The body's immune system is a marvelous thing. It can spot a flu virus cell in moments, wards off the bacteria that we encounter every day, and keeps us from becoming as ill as those alien invaders in "War of the Worlds" Remember that old movie? The aliens had never been exposed to cold germs, so had no immunity to them and were destroyed by the common cold. Ask THEM if a working immune system is important!
In a healthy individual, the immune sytem of the body works like this: When foreign substances like bacteria enter the body (For example, say, through a paper cut on your finger), the body immediately recognized the bacteria as an invader and goes into the immune response. It creates cells to seek and destroy the invader. White blood cells are an example of these fighting cells that attack invaders.
In a person with an autoimmune disease, the immune response is "disordered" and cannot tell the difference between foreign cells and body cells. The it produces immunological cells that attack its own cells instead of invaders. These defective antibodies attack the body's cells to such an extent that damage occurs to the body's tissues.

Evidently, one in five Americans has an autoimmune disease (and 75 percent are women!). There are organ- specific disorders as well as systemic ones. Patients

Dehydration Also Causes Neurological and Autoimmune Disorders.
Persistent dehydration inside some vital cells, in its extreme stages, will result in a number of disruptive conditions that have been labeled as different diseases – depending on the specialty of the “medical specialist” who first labels the problem. The initial stages of these health problems will begin by the loss of some of the most essential amino acids that get used up as detoxifying agents – antioxidants, when the person is not producing enough urine to get rid of the toxic waste of metabolism. Since brain activity desperately depends on the presence of some of these amino acids, their depletive overuse will result in an inadequate presence of certain neurotransmitters – such as serotonin, tryptamine, melatonin and indolamine that are made from the amino acid tryptophan; or adrenaline, noradrenalin and dopamine that are made from the amino acid tyrosine. As a result of an imbalance in the neurotransmitter composition of the brain, and based on proportionate depletion of a number of primary elements, a wide range of health problems have been recognized by the medical profession. Instead of recognizing these conditions as “deficiency disorders, they have been labeled as “diseases of unknown cause.” In short, when dehydration produces health problems, instead of correcting the dehydration and its metabolic complications, people are given toxic medications.
