University Students With Autism And Asperger's Syndrome
What's New?
Prospects Transitions Project Prospects, The National Autistic Society's employment consultancy, is launching a new, two-and-a-half year project, which will help final year university students with Asperger syndrome into work. The project is joint funded through the London Development Agency and the European Social Fund and is aimed at students who live and wish to work in the London area. The aim of the project is to work with students who have either just finished their studies or are about to enter their final year at university. The aim of the project is to help them develop the skills which they will need to find employment. This will be achieved through a mixture of workshops and one-to-one sessions, focusing on areas such as career choice, communication and interview skills as well as effective job searching. The project will run until 2007. Prospects is currently looking for people, who meet the criteria to join the project. For more information about the Transitions project or to see if you would qualify to access it, please contact Judith Kerem on 020 7704 7450. Alternatively, we can be contacted via email. Autism and Asperger's
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
November 2003 Autism is a disorder that affects the way a person communicates with other people. Most (but not all) people with autism also have a learning disability. There are a number of related disorders known as autistic spectrum disorders. These include Asperger's syndrome, which involves fewer or less disabling autism symptoms.
About autism and Asperger's
Around 9 in a 1000 children aged four to five are affected by an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism is rarer, affecting about 1 in 5,000 children. It is four times more common in boys than girls. An ASD is any disorder where autistic symptoms are present. Autism is thought to be caused by an abnormality in the development of the brain that occurs before, during or soon after birth. The exact cause is unknown, but doctors think that there may be a genetic factor, but no pattern of inheritance.

UW Autism Center provides diagnostic evaluations and multi-disciplinary intervention services for children with autism spectrum disorders from infancy through adolescence, and a wide range of professional training opportunities. Our mission is to provide state-of-the-art clinical services, increase capacity for services through training, and increase knowledge and awareness about autism in the professional community and general public. The Autism Center is part of the Center on Human Development and Disability at the University of Washington and involves faculty and staff from the UW School of Medicine, Colleges of Arts and Sciences, and Education. UW Autism Center involves scientists from several different disciplines who are working collaboratively to discover the cause of autism and develop effective treatments. The research program is part of a larger network of research projects in the United States which are funded by the National Institutes of Health called the Collaborative Program of Excellence in Autism (CPEA) and the STAART (Studies to Advance Autism Research and Treatment) Centers Program. We believe that collaboration among scientists is important to help us answer some of the essential questions facing individuals, families, and the larger autism community.

Victim Families Say Autism-Vaccination Link Painfully Obvious
Attempts at disclosure have been silenced by the government and media, who continually deny that any connection exists. Huge potential liabilities and lost profits are thought to be the primary reason for stonewalling relief for a situation that now effects approximately 1 in 66 families. by Sterling D. Allan

Faith Dyson, self portrait F aith Dyson, Cultural Arts Director for Project America Foundation, does not believe the much-publicized Institute of Medicine report issued on May 18 that claims there is no link between immunizations and autism. Faith agrees with the National Autism Association's reply that cites "strong clinical evidence from accredited doctors and researchers that suggests otherwise."
Her 18-month-old twins, Michael and Robert, "screamed for three days" after they received the DPT vaccination. When she called the doctor's office, the nurse assured her, "That's a good reaction. The more they scream, the better it's working."
Her gut instinct said otherwise. She had read the book

AUTISM AND THE MOTOR THEORY OF LANGUAGE Robin Allott Abstract
What is autism?
The short answer is : no one really knows but there have been many excellent accounts of manifestations of autism in children by experts such as Lorna Wing, Frances Tustin, Uta Frith, Patricia Howlin and many others. The following account draws directly upon their descriptions of autism and upon the summary of the features of autism by the National Autistic Society.
The autistic child has no sense of 'me' and 'not-me' except in fleeting moments of awareness. Such a child lives mostly in terms of the outlines of shapes. Touch seems to be the predominant mode of experience and seeing, hearing and even smelling are felt to be tactile experiences. People are treated as things which are extensions of the child's own bodily 'things'. The handicap is in its nature more similar to blindness or deafness than to, say, shyness. Autistic children have an obsessive desire for sameness.
Perhaps more difficult to explain are the unusual responses to sensory stimuli. Oversensitivity to certain sounds, fascination with bright lights or objects that spin, and indifference to pain, heat or cold may all occur in young autistic children. The way these children cover their ears to shut out or modify sound is often remarked upon. Often there are paradoxical responses to sensations (e.g. covering eyes in response to a sound, or ears in response to a visual stimulus). Play is ritualistic and lacking in imagination, most noticeably in those autistic children with the most severe language impairments.

Autism Autism Autism Autism [Color codes: blue = accessible page; light grey = page you are on; dark grey = under construction] What is autism? Autism is a developmental delay that includes symptoms such as speech difficulties, lack of eye contact, isolation and no fear of danger. Autistic children act and sound like much younger children. What causes autism specifically is not known. Some experts believe there are bio-chemical reasons for autism; others suspect that it is a psychiatric disorder. Some believe that a combination of the wrong foods and too many antibiotics and environmental toxins can damage the colon and lead to physical and behavioral problems, including autism. The behavioral syndrome of autism includes abnormalities of language and thinking skills; repetitive behavior such as rocking; abnormal responses to sensations, people, events and objects; and self-injurious behavior. New Note: Before going on to explore this in-depth section concerning the theories of autism, you may want to read a summary overview article by Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona
