Yeast Infections
Top of page...
It has been suggested that the presence of yeast infections in the gut and, perhaps, other parts of the body, could result in autism. Crook (1984) has done much to publicise these ideas and has been ridiculed for his ideas. Human intestines are packed with bacteria which break down certain foodstuffs in such a way that digestion is aided. Under certain circumstances, yeasts, which are fungi, can become established and will utilise foodstuffs to their advantage. The suggestion is that waste products from the yeast will be absorbed from the gut and create havoc within the body inhibiting development of the CNS and interrupting neurotransmission. Shaw (1995) has isolated a number of metabolites (such as arabinose, tartaric acid and 3-keto-glutaric acid) from the urine of people with autism. Since these substances are, as far as we know, more or less (but not totally) restricted to fungal sources. It is argued that these are evidence of fungal infection. It is suggested that some of these chemicals are sufficiently similar to normal metabolites of human cells, and specifically those involved in Krebs Cycle that this basic metabolic process is disrupted and autism is the ultimate consequence.

Asperger's What Does it Mean to Me?

www.aspergers-whatdoesitmean.com
"Asperger's: What Does it Mean to Me?" by Catherine Faherty is a book that dramatically expands the understanding of high functioning autism and Asperger's to the caregiver as well as the individuals with these challenges. One chapter instructs the caregiver, either parent or professional, while the next leads the individual with Asperger's/HFA through a necessary adventure of self discovery. The unique binding makes it easy to copy lessons to be used over and over again. Asperger's: What Does It Mean to Me?
Faherty, Catherine This workbook gives children and teens with high-functioning autism and Asperger's Syndrome an opportunity to understand themselves and their diagnosis. Explaining that autism is "another way of thinking and being", it offers activities that help children understand learning styles, sensory experiences, artistic talent, other people, communication, the school environment, friends, and feelings. In each of these areas, introductory material is addressed to the parent, teacher, or therapist explaining how they can help structure the child's experience in order to promote understanding and positive interaction. Special binding allows for easy photcopying for classroom use.
Dr. Gary Mesibov, director of the TEACCH program in North Carolina states, "The author's marvelous ability to understand the perspectives of people with autism and her wonderful talent of explaining difficult concepts at a level they can understand is very special. This book is a very unique opportunity to help people with autism . . ." Also available in Spanish.

Definition
Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-NOS (not otherwise specified) are developmental disabilities that share many of the same characteristics. Usually evident by age three, autism and PDD-NOS are neurological disorders that affect a child’s ability to communicate, understand language, play, and relate to others. In the diagnostic manual used to classify disabilities, the DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 2000), “autistic disorder” is listed as a category under the heading of “Pervasive Developmental Disorders.” A diagnosis of autistic disorder is made when an individual displays 6 or more of 12 symptoms listed across three major areas: social interaction, communication, and behavior. When children display similar behaviors but do not meet the criteria for autistic disorder, they may receive a diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Disorder-NOS (PDD not otherwise specified). Although the diagnosis is referred to as PDD-NOS, throughout the remainder of this fact sheet, we will refer to the diagnosis as PDD, as it is more commonly known. Autistic disorder is one of the disabilities specifically defined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the federal legislation under which children and youth with disabilities receive special education and related services. IDEA, which uses the term “autism,” defines the disorder as “a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, usually evident before age 3, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. Other characteristics often associated with autism are engagement in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences.” (In keeping with the IDEA and the way in which this disorder is generally referred to in the field, we will use the term autism throughout the remainder of this fact sheet.)

Psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen and his colleagues at Cambridge's Autism Research Centre have created the Autism-Spectrum Quotient, or AQ, as a measure of the extent of autistic traits in adults. In the first major trial using the test, the average score in the control group was 16.4. Eighty percent of those diagnosed with autism or a related disorder scored 32 or higher. The test is not a means for making a diagnosis, however, and many who score above 32 and even meet the diagnostic criteria for mild autism or Asperger's report no difficulty functioning in their everyday lives.
Definitely agree Slightly agree Slightly disagree Definitely disagree I prefer to do things with others rather than on my own. I prefer to do things the same way over and over again. If I try to imagine something, I find it very easy to create a picture in my mind. I frequently get so strongly absorbed in one thing that I lose sight of other things. I often notice small sounds when others do not.

A small non profit agency which every week provides safe harbor for individuals with autism who come to make art.
http://www.studiobythetracks.com/
Introduction
Visual works created by individuals with autism provide windows into singularly unique and fascinating universes. No one has fully explained why autism occurs. Friends and family members are often frustrated by the inability to enter into communion with the autistic person, but there are divides which are bridgeable. This is the web site for Studio By The Tracks, a small non-profit agency which every week provides safe harbor for 25 individuals with autism who come here to make art. We also provide a safe arena for dozens of at-risk children who come to the Studio to sculpt, paint, draw, deconstruct, assemble, write and act. Please check out out galleries of visual works by adults with autism and at-risk youth. Also please check out our calendar of upcoming events and classes.
Mission Statement
Studio By The Tracks (SBTT), a non-profit organization, was formed in 1989 to provide free art classes to special needs adults and emotionally conflicted children. SBTT provides a focused, energized effort which allows troubled young people and adults with special needs an outlet to create. We encourage a supportive and nonjudgmental atmosphere necessary to nurture creative abilities, enhance self-esteem, and explore alternative ways of coping with emotional and physical conflict. The success of out program is two-fold. First, since opening our doors in 1989, over 1,000 at-risk youth have participated in the curriculum at SBTT. A great number of these young people maintain contact with the Studio and many credit the Studio as a catalyst in their success after leaving the program.

Melillo's specifications, based on extensive research and knowledge that certain types and frequencies of sound are specifically processed by the two hemispheres of the brain differently. By using specific music and sounds BrainBalance Music may help to stimulate one hemisphere more than the other and possibly create more balance in the brain. The majority of symptoms in children and adults including attention deficits, learning disabilities, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety, chronic pain and many more are all directly a result of an imbalance of electrical activity in the brain. There are many environmental factors that can produce an imbalance of electrical activity and function of the two sides of the brain documented as either an increase of activity on one side or a decreased activity on the other. Research has shown that the side of the brain that is most problematic is most often the side that is understimulated. The use of BrainBalance Music as as source of stimulation to the brain may be a very powerful tool to achieve a balance of brain activity.

ASAT is committed to science as the most objective, time-tested and reliable approach to discerning between safe, effective autism treatments, and those that are harmful or ineffective. ASAT supports all scientifically sound research on the prevention, treatment and cure of autism, as well as all treatments for autism that are shown to be effective through solid scientific research, regardless of discipline or domain. Until recently autism was considered to be lifelong and severely incapacitating. However scientific investigation has demonstrated that, with early, effective and validated intervention, individuals with autism can make significant improvements and lead lives filled with hope, promise and purpose. Some, in fact, can achieve normal social and intellectual functioning. Despite these profound advances, many individuals with autism are unable to obtain effective treatment due to a lack of knowledge and access to this vital, scientific information.
