Autism and Mercury
by Tim O'Shea,DC This article is excerpted from Dr. O'Shea's revised edition of The Sanctity of Human Blood. Inquiry into vaccine safety is exploding like never before, even in the popular press. Research coming from dozens of mainstream medical studies can no longer be easily suppressed, as it has been in the past, especially with the prevalence of online information exchange. Last September, some 2,000 people, mostly MDs, assembled at the Town and Country resort in San Diego to hear the latest research on autism. Following the April 2000 Congressional hearings on autism and vaccines, this epidemic can no longer be ignored. The figure of one autistic infant for every 150 is now widely documented.

Current research shows that many cases of autism result from an immune-system dysfunction that affects the body's ability to break down certain proteins and combat yeasts and bacteria. Many parents are convinced of the validity of dietary intervention for autistic individuals, but do not have the resources to try it themselves, especially those with picky eaters and skeptical spouses. ANDI was established by parent researchers, Lisa Lewis and Karyn Seroussi, to help families around the world get started on, and maintain an appropriate diet. The ANDI mission is simple:
To help parents understand, implement and maintain dietary intervention for their autistic children.

The ANDI News, published quarterly, provides the latest information about the biological treatment of autism. Our goal is to provide continued support for families implementing this diet, to share experiences, recipes and tips, and to let you know that you are not alone! We also offer hard-to-find books, food bars and informational brochures by mail order. Subscription price is $26 for four quarterly issues ($30 for international mail subscriptions, $22 electronic). — Lisa Lewis and Karyn Seroussi

Parents Medical Problems
Autism is a developmental disability that usually shows symptoms between 18 and 36 months. Autism affects children in many different ways and, as a result, is medically referred to as a "spectrum disorder." More than 500,000 people in the United States have been diagnosed with autism; it may occur in as many as one in 500 individuals and is four times more prevalent in boys than girls. In the last 5 years, autism has become the third most common form of developmental delay, and now occurs more commonly than Down syndrome . Because there is nothing abnormal about the child's physical appearance, this disorder can be difficult to recognize. Causes
There is no one specific cause of autism. Current research focuses on biological and neurological differences in the brain, including biochemical imbalances, genetic influences, and immunologic problems. Food allergies , excessive amounts of yeast in the digestive tract, and exposure to environmental toxins have all been implicated. Symptoms
Children exhibit mild to severe symptoms of delay, in many combinations and varying degrees of severity, although in all cases, the ability to communicate and social interaction are the most impaired functions.

The Criminal Justice Process
Boring text warning: This describes details of the criminal justice process as applies to people on the autism Spectrum. If this isn't engaging, consider skimming it or skip down to the " not guilty " section.
Summary
Many of the assumptions of the criminal process focus on "normal" NT behaviour. This generally is not a problem, but there are times when police and court efficiency conflicts with the reality of normal behaviour of autistics. It is therefore possible that someone on The Spectrum will have a run-in with the criminal justice system. "The Spectrum" generally means the autism Spectrum, including Asperger's syndrome, HFA, PDD and Kanner's autism. Many of us are comfortable with the generic reference of "autistic".
For the above reason someone on The Spectrum should be prepared for an encounter with the criminal justice system. This is a four-fold process:
  • initial police encounter
  • investigative and interrogative procedures
  • prosecution
  • prison environment
    The Procedure
The four steps can be explained as follows.

Krista's younger brother seemed really quiet when Iris met him for the first time. "Yeah, he has autism," Krista said while they sorted through her CDs. Then she started talking about a new band, so Iris didn't have a chance to ask her any questions. It left her wondering: What is autism? How does someone get it? Can it be treated? What Is Autism?
Autism is a developmental disorder that some people are born with - it's not something you can catch or pass along to someone else. It affects the brain and makes communicating and interacting with other people difficult. People who have autism often have delayed language development, prefer to spend time alone, and show less interest in making friends . Another characteristic of autism is what some people describe as "sensory overload": Sounds seem louder, lights brighter, or smells stronger. Although many people with autism also have mental retardation, some are of average or high intelligence. Not everybody with autism has the exact same symptoms. Some people may have autism that is mild, whereas others may have autism that is more severe. Because it affects people differently, autism is known as a spectrum disorder . Two people with the same spectrum disorder may not act alike or have the same skills. As many as one in 500 people have autism, and it's four times more common in guys than in girls. Although doctors do not know exactly what causes it, researchers believe autism is linked to differences in brain chemicals (

    http://www.behavior.org/
Behavior analysis (sometimes called behavioral psychology) is the scientific study of behavior and its relationship to the environment surrounding the individual. Prior stimuli and a history of consequences play a huge part in increasing or decreasing the frequency and likelihood that behavior will occur. The science was originally established by B.F. Skinner and his colleagues, but now there are thousands of behavior analysts around the world, continuing to scientifically enhance our understanding of behavioral dynamics, or applying the science to create more effective solutions to real-world problems. “Applied behavior analysis” refers to practical solutions to everyday challenges where poor behavior is the problem. The Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies (CCBS) is proud to present sections of its web site featuring behavioral solutions to education, parenting, autism, aging, safety, performance management in business, computer modeling of behavior, verbal behavior (language and thinking), and training of pets and animals, among others. Please follow these links to the individual sections of our site.

According to those who know me the best, I am someone who: sings in the kitchen, loves children and animals, is intense and focused (sometimes to a fault!) about subjects that are important to me, is slow to anger, likes a challenge, has a kooky sense of humor, and is determined to fix things that are wrong. So there you have it, right from the sources. For my part, I would add that I love to read, garden, hike, dance, and cross-country ski when I can.

I've written short reviews of various books that I've read since Tara's diagnosis. Beyond that you will find a short listing of key resources . A note about these resources. I don't expect this list to grow and please don't ask me to link to your site. I will take suggestions on what new books to read. This site was reviewed by Mental Health Net giving it a single star out of a possible 4. The best rating that they've given in their Autism section is 3 stars. I guess this means that either I have lots of room for improvement or the site isn't what they expected.

It has been known to accelerate progress with allied therapies such as speech, occupational therapy, movement and other developmental therapies. DAN (Defeat Autism Now) Doctors advise parents to consider AIT as one of the first interventions, to alleviate symptoms of autism, reduce painful hearing (hyperacusis) and improve receptive language.
