Autism and Vaccination
Picture courtesy of BBC Online News This webpage was set up with the express purpose of disseminating information and research about the possible links between vaccination and autism. It is not the intention of the Autism Research Unit or the University of Sunderland to provide medical advice about the issue of vaccination. We recommend that any decision regarding the vaccination of your child should be made in conjunction with the appropriate physician/s.
ARU Homepage
Introduction There is an increasing amount of research being conducted into the possible link between autism and vaccination. Along with many other groups throughout the world, the Autism Research Unit at the University of Sunderland is committed to examining the nature of this association through scientific research. Due to the nature of the work conducted at the Unit and the strong contact established with parents of people with autism, we at the Unit, have become increasingly aware of an increased incidence of parents claiming that their child's autism was the result of, or compounded by, vaccination. Many times each week, we are contacted by parents who talk about the effect they saw when their child was vaccinated, often describing harrowing scenes of extremely rapid regression, from perfectly ordinary children to children who exhibit very severe behavioural and physiological problems. Of course, clinicians and parents alike readily accept that by the very definition of a pervasive developmental disorder such as autism, a period of regression very often accompanies the onset of symptoms, and as such one cannot discount the possibility that the timing of vaccinations with autism onset is merely one of coincidence rather than cause. This cannot however be assumed when adequate research has yet to be properly conducted, both epidemiological and the direct study of individual cases.

Interview with Mitzi Waltz: Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
Author-advocate Waltz, now studying at the Autism Research Unit, answers questions about the increasing number of diagnoses, potential link with immunizations, autism and genetics, current treatment research, and the impact on families. Autistic Spectrum Disorders is a new book by Mitzi Waltz, a revised and updated edition of Pervasive Developmental Disorders The Diagnostic Merry-Go-Round. The diagnosis of ASD is usually a frustrating process of diagnosis by elimination, after a range of specified conditions in the autistic spectrum and related conditions are ruled out. Getting a Diagnosis: Starting with a Pediatrician. The journey to a diagnosis of ASD can begin in different ways, but for most it starts in a pediatrician's office. Tips for Daily Family Life. There are a lot of things about raising a child with ASD that teachers, therapists, and doctors don't know much about. Hints from parents about daily life, including tips on haircuts, bathing, clothing, selecting furniture, and safety precautions. Record Keeping.

Beyond Autism Spring Has Sprung! Beyond Autism is a site by a parent that has "been there, done that, and still doing it". This autism site contains over 2,700 working links to other resources and is a comprehensive source of information for those of you just starting out - to help you move "beyond" the label of autism - somehow we all have to do that no matter how difficult it is... I have included many links on teaching methodologies, education and "special" education resources, IEP information, augmentive and communication assistance with assistive technology information, disability legal information, sensory dysfunction issues, specialized catalogs, behavior problems and much more! There is a trove of information here on PECS and communication. There are many wonderful and helpful resources available to assist parents and professionals working with children with Autism and many other developmental disabilities. I have tried to include and weed through as many resources as I can so that you will not have to go the search engine route on "autism" and sort through them all....I hope this site helps better prepare you for what lies ahead. Over the years I have learned that there is no one intervention that fits all.I believe that there are portions of many different methodologies that may be applicable to each individual child. There are many issues involved with these children that fall under the "autism spectrum" label - communication, social, behavioral, neurologic, gastrointestinal, immunologic, genetic, allergic, nutritional, metabolic etc....Many of them affect each other and yet have to be addressed individually as they arise.

Autism in the Movies
Written by Stephen M. Edelson, Ph.D.
Center for the Study of Autism, Salem, Oregon
This list contains only movies which were released in the cinemas, and all have been subsequently released on videocassette. There have been numerous made-for-television movies as well as television shows with an autistic character, but there are too many of these to list. Additionally, most of these are not available on videocassette. Most of the actors/actresses in the movies do a reasonable job of portraying a person with autism. However, the majority do not provide an accurate description of the underlying cause of autism and may, in fact, label a person as autistic who, given the circumstances presented, may not be. If you are aware of any other movies not included on the list, please let us know!

Autism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Childhood autism
Autism
is classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests itself in markedly abnormal social interaction, communication ability, patterns of interests, and patterns of behavior. Although the specific etiology of autism is unknown, genetic factors appear to be important. To diagnose the condition a list of psychiatric criteria as well as a series of standardized clinical tests may be used. Physiologically , autism may lack readily visible differences, but it is linked to abnormal biological and neurochemical development of the brain . A complete physical and neurological evaluation will typically be part of determining a diagnosis of autism. Some now speculate that autism is in fact several distinct conditions that manifest themselves in similar ways rather than a single diagnosis. By definition, autism must manifest delays in "social interaction, language as used in social communication, or symbolic or imaginative play," with "onset prior to age 3 years." (
