ABA Resources for Recovery from Autism/PDD/Hyperlexia
I am the father of a school-age child who has autism. This is a collection of Internet and other resources which parents of children with PDD PDD-NOS autism Asperger's Syndrome , or hyperlexia may find useful. All the information concerns teaching methods that are a branch of applied behavior analysis (ABA) called behavioral intervention . One of the methods is discrete trial training . Some (inaccurately) use the term " Lovaas method." We worked hard to get complete information, implement a program, and have our school system pay for it. My hope is to help spare other parents (and their children) some of the pain and wasted time we went through. Here are all the helpful resources I've found, with the best places to start marked . The essentials of starting a program for your child are marked to . Please also see the frequently asked questions about ABA and autism . For information on training or employment see the education and employment listings Why don't the links work?

more About Autism Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental disabilities that are caused by an abnormality in the brain. People with ASDs tend to have problems with social and communication skills. They also are likely to repeat certain behaviors and to not want change in their daily activities. Many people with ASDs also have unusual ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to different sensations. ASDs begin during childhood and last throughout a person's life. The following question and answer section will help you learn more about ASDs. What are some of the symptoms of ASDs? As the name "autism spectrum disorder" says, ASDs cover a wide range of behaviors and abilities. People who have ASDs, like all people, differ greatly in the way they act and what they can do. No two people with ASDs will have the same symptoms. A symptom might be mild in one person and severe in another person. Some examples of the types of problems and behaviors a child or adult with an ASD might have follow.

Our organization was founded in 1990 to protect and advance the human rights and civil rights of all persons with autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and related differences of communication and behavior. In the face of social policies of devaluation, which are expressed in the practices of segregation, medicalization, and aversive conditioning, we assert that all individuals are created equal and endowed with certain inalienable rights, and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Katrina Devastates Families with Autism
We have done this before and we can do it again. I am making a personal plea to all of my readers: There are many displaced families who have children with autism that have been affected by Katrina. Some of these people have lost everything. The routine that is so critical to these children is gone. Please find the time and read this press release. Then open your heart the way Americans can when hit by tragedy and give just a little more than you can give. It won't hurt a bit and you will feel better than you ever could imagine!

60. TEACCH - Autism Primer : Twenty Questions And Answers
Frequently asked questions from TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic andrelated Communication handicapped Children).
http://www.teacch.com/20ques.htm
AUTISM PRIMER: TWENTY QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS 1. What Is Autism? 2. What are the characteristics of autism? 3. What causes autism? 4. How common is autism? ... 20. What groups in North Carolina are working to help people with autism? Third Edition - 07/99
1. What is Autism?

Autism is a life-long developmental disability that prevents individuals from properly understanding what they see, hear, and otherwise sense. This results in severe problems of social relationships, communication, and behavior.
Individuals with autism have to painstakingly learn normal patterns of speech and communication, and appropriate ways to relate to people, objects, and events, in a similar manner to those who have had a stroke.
2. What are the characteristics of autism?

The degree of severity of characteristics differs from person to person, but usually includes the following:
    Severe delays in language development.
Language is slow to develop, if it develops at all. If it does develop, it usually includes peculiar speech patterns or the use of words without attachment to their normal meaning. Those who are able to use language effectively may still use unusual metaphors or speak in a formal and monotone voice.

Severe delays in understanding social relationships.
