Autism FAQ - Controversies
See also section below, " History ", for older controversies. These are subjects which can stir up debate on the AUTISM mailing list and would presumably do so in any diverse group of autistic people and people involved with autism. If you have to deal with autism, you should at least be aware that there are such points of controversy. In fact, it is likely the that no matter what this memo says on these issues, there will be complaints.
Is Autism a Disability?
Well-adapted autistic people and autistic people who are close to being sufficiently adapted to function independently have naturally brought up the question whether Autism should be considered a disability, or whether it should simply be considered a somewhat different kind of personality. On the other hand, there are certainly autistic people who need constant supervision and help simply to get through life. A related and dangerous question that people sometimes ask themselves is: "if my or someone else's autism could be 'erased', would I agree to that?"
Inclusion in education and society
How much? How much effort? What can society afford? How can society deny basic rights to individuals?

Autism Spectrum Disorders (Pervasive Developmental Disorders)
What are Autism Spectrum Disorders?
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), also known as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs), cause severe and pervasive impairment in thinking, feeling, language, and the ability to relate to others. These disorders are usually first diagnosed in early childhood and range from a severe form, called autistic disorder, through pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), to a much milder form, Asperger syndrome. They also include two rare disorders, Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder. more>>
Parents are usually the first to notice unusual behaviors in their child. In some cases, the baby seemed "different" from birth, unresponsive to people or focusing intently on one item for long periods of time. The first signs of an autism spectrum disorder can also appear in children who had been developing normally. When an affectionate, babbling toddler suddenly becomes silent, withdrawn, self-abusive, or indifferent to social overtures, something is wrong.

Autism Spectrum Disorders are lifelong neurodevelopmental disorders that affect how people communicate and relate to others. The range and intensity of disability varies, but all people affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders have difficulty with communication, learning and social skills. There is no definitive cause or cure, but specialized interventions can give people affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders the tools they need to lead full and productive lives.

MMR Links to 170 Cases of Autism
Dr. Andrew Wakefield who first raised concerns about MMR vaccinations has disclosed that he has identified nearly 170 cases of a new syndrome of autism and bowel disease in children who have had the triple-dose injection.
In the "majority" of cases parents had documentary evidence that their child's physical and mental decline had followed the vaccination The Department of Health says that the safety of MMR has been proven. The argument is untenable. It cannot be substantiated by the science. Tests have revealed time and time again that we are dealing with a new phenomenon . The Department of Health's contention that MMR has been proven to be safe by study after study after study just doesn't hold up. Frankly, it is not an honest appraisal of the science and it relegates the scientific issues to the bottom of the barrel in favour of winning a propaganda war.

Aromatherapy and autism
By Jane Ellwood
While working in a Special School, I was asked by a Teacher to direct a series of Aromatherapy sessions with a small group of severely autistic children during the autumn term of September to December 1999. Essential oils were already being used in the school in other classes but not in any structured way. The group was a small class of 6 junior aged children, all severely autistic and non-verbal. The class comprised of a mixture of learning styles: 'Alan' was mono-sensory, only able to use one sense at a time; 'Michael' and 'Jon' being very tactile defensive children, usually resistant to any form of physical contact; 'Rod', a severely hyperactive child with obvious attention deficit, unable to sit still for longer than a few seconds at a time; 'Gary' was probably the most able of the group, a kinaesthetic learner and always very inquisitive: the remaining child 'James', solely a functional learner who chose isolation and was often very difficult and aggressive.
Planning
Before starting the sessions, I got permission from parents to use essential oils with the children. I also asked the parents to indicate specific medical needs and talked to the School Nurse about medications the children were on and to help identify any specific difficulties. One of the children was epileptic which contraindicated the use of essential oils associated with seizures (Aniseed, Fennel, Hyssop, Sage (Sanderson et al. 1997, p113, and possibly Rosemary (Price et al. 1999, p342). There were no other contraindications with the group.

Abuse as it Affects People with Asperger's Syndrome and Autism
This is linked to pages on relationships and autistics , and relates to abuse in intimate relationships. An ability to identify people on the Spectrum presents one potential hazard abusers who stalk people with disabilities. Fortunately such abusers are rare. It is possible (and very easy) to protect oneself from abusers who stalk by being alert for warning signs of these people. ("The Spectrum" generally means the autism Spectrum, including Asperger's syndrome, HFA, PDD and Kanner's autism. Many of us are comfortable with the generic reference of "autistic".)
Just Another Internet Scare Story
Dating is not a dangerous activity. There is nothing in this article by which one should reasonably determine that dating is inherently dangerous. There are hazards in any enterprise and one which involves interactions with other people is no exception. If you cross the street, there are lethal objects which by themselves have no regard as to whether they kill you. Someone warned you to look before crossing, and presumably you consider that sufficient. One wouldn't avoid leaving one's block because of those lethal objects cruising up and down the streets. There is more risk involved in being alone than in establishing an intimate relationship. If you are concerned (or merely aware) about the risks of a relationship, that concern or awareness should in itself be sufficient to protect you.
