What causes attention deficit disorder?
Information on Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) the underlying causes of this disorder.
(this article does not summarize the latest on ADHD) Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is one of the most frequently clinically referred psychological disorders in children. It can occur with (more common) or without hyperactivity, and has a higher incidence in male children. The disorder typically onsets by age 2 or 3 years, but help is generally not sought until these children enter school and experience difficulties. This article will examine what ADD is and its possible causes. As infants, sufferers may be colicky, irritable and difficult to manage (Barkley, 1985), and inability to maintain attention is the central characteristic of ADD. Impulsivity (which suggests poor self-control, excitability and inability to delay gratification or inhibit urges) and overactivity (parents and teachers often comment that these children cannot sit still) are also evident. They also have social difficulties (Cunningham et al., 1980) and they are often referred to as immature, uncooperative, self-centered and bossy. Aggressive behaviors, reading difficulties and other academic problems are also common. The prognosis is not good - children with ADD tend to carry their academic and social problems into adulthood, when some may improve, but the vast majority experience life-long problems.

Introduction
Attention deficit disorders are disorders characterized by serious and persistent difficulties in attention span, impulse control, and hyperactivity. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a chronic disorder that can begin in infancy and extend through adulthood. It can have a significantly negative effect on an individual's life at home, in school, or in the community. There are two types of attention deficit disorders: undifferentiated Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In undifferentiated ADD, the primary and most significant characteristic is inattentiveness but hyperactivity is not present. These students still manifest problems with organization and distractibility, even though they may seem quite and passive. These students also tend to be overlooked more easily in the classroom, and may be at a higher risk for academic failure than those with ADHD. To be diagnosed as having ADHD a student must display, for six months or more, at least eight of the following characteristics prior to the age of seven:

These symptoms should have been present before the age of seven, must be present in two or more different settings (school and home, for example), and should be causing some impairment in the child's functioning, including causing difficulty in school, or in social situations. If your child has the symptoms of attention deficit disorder, but it isn't causing any impairment in his functioning, then he doesn't have ADHD.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders among children, and may be diagnosed in adults, where it is often referred to as Adult attention-deficit disorder (AADD) if symptoms were not present in childhood. Current theory holds that approximately 30% of children diagnosed retain the disorder as adults. ADHD psychosis (or ADD psychosis ), on the other hand, is a distinctive form of psychosis , identified by Leopold Bellak and his colleagues, which co-occurs with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and tends to be treatable with typical ADHD medication such as stimulants (or some antidepressants ), but not with conventional or atypical antipsychotic medication.
