ADHD and Children Who Are Gifted
Frequently, bright children have been referred to psychologists or pediatricians because they exhibited certain behaviors (e.g., restlessness, inattention, impulsivity, high activity level, day-dreaming) commonly associated with a diagnosis of ADHD. Almost all of these behaviors, however, might be found in bright, talented, creative, gifted children. Until now, little attention has been given to the similarities and differences between the two groups, thus raising the potential for misidentification in both areas-giftedness and ADHD. This digest provides specific differences between the two groups that will help parents and educators better understand and evaluate their children.

    Defining Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD)
Attention deficit disorder is a syndrome characterized by serious and persistent difficulties in the following three specific areas:
  • Attention span.
  • Impulse control.
  • Hyperactivity (sometimes). ADD is a chronic disorder that can begin in infancy and extend through adulthood, having negative effects on a child's life at home, school, and within the community. It is conservatively estimated that 3 to 5% of our school-age population is affected by ADD. The condition previously fell under the headings, "learning disabled," "brain damaged," "hyperkinetic," or "hyperactive." The term attention deficit disorder was introduced to describe the characteristics of these children more clearly.

Dunlap, Ph.D. Over the last decade, there has been a tremendous amount of research dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Children diagnosed with ADD tend to have difficulty giving or sustaining attention. They frequently appear unorganized, and may have difficulty following instructions or directions. Often, these children tend to lose items related to task completion and tend to be forgetful. Some children with the disorder may also display hyperactive and/or impulsive behavior. They squirm or become fidgety, interrupt others, talk excessively, engage in a high level of motor activity and have difficulty in turn-taking activities. Many children with ADD experience difficulty building and maintaining positive peer relationships. Increasingly, more and more professionals engaged in the treatment of children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD are recommending that these children become involved in a martial arts program. For many children with Attention Deficit Disorder, the dojang provides ideal place to increase attention span, decrease distraction, develop motor and behavioral control, improve self-esteem, and build positive peer relationships. As a Certified School Psychologist, I have frequently recommended taekwondo instruction for ADD children. As a taekwondo instructor, I have seen ADD children make tremendous strides in their ability to sustain attention and control behavior. Finally, as the mother of an ADD child, I have seen the impact that taekwondo instruction can have on attentional and behavioral concerns on the home front.

INTRODUCTION Although the percentage of smoking in the general population is declining, the rate of this is slowest among women of childbearing age. The recent National Household Survey on Drug Abuse reported that among women of reproductive age, approximately one-third smoke cigarettes on a regular basis. These figures for the United States are within one or two percentages of those noted in Canada and Sweden. In five surveys throughout the U.S., the extent of cigarette use by women during pregnancy "hyperkinetic disease" as one of the "very rare" psychoses of childhood. In other early textbooks, Kanner (2) gave only five sentences to "the restless, fidgety, hyperkinetic child", "the single most common behavioral disorder seen by child psychiatrists."

Nov. 1999 Updated November 15, 2002 Goal of this Web Site: It has been my goal to educate teachers, parents, and those of us living with ADD or experiencing ADD in our families. My intent is to bring information in an accurate, positive manner. My hope is to help others understand and accept AD/HD. To accomplish this goal, I authored a series of newsletters. Well known AD/HD experts such as Dr. Claire Jones, Dr. Bruce Pasch, Cynthia Pasch, M.Ed, Dr. Ed Hallowell, Dr. Katherine Nadeau, Mary Jane Johnson, Larry Saltzman, Dr. Sarah Roth, Dr. David Rabiner, Wilma Felman, Sigmund Boloz, and other professionals graciously contributed to the newsletters. Initially the newsletters were available by subscription but time pressures have prevented me from continuing them on a subscription basis. They will be made available on this website. Thank you for taking the time to complete the questionnaires and sending your comments. Many have had questions, comments, and requests to share the narratives. These responses will add to the web page and newsletters.

When we talk about the use of stimulant medications in psychiatry, we generally are referring to methylphenidate (Ritalin) amphetamine (Dexedrine, Adderall) methamphetamine (Desoxyn) and pemoline (Cylert.) The first two are by far the most commonly prescribed. The stimulant medications increase the release or block the reabsorption of dopamine and norepinephrine, two brain neurotransmitters. This increases the transmission between certain neurons. Each stimulant has these effects in slightly different ways. Thus each may have similar or different effects on the AD/HD symptoms of a given individual. A recent study (using specially bred mice) reported in the Jan. 1999 issue of
