71. FAS/ARND Or Attachment Disorder?
attachment disorders can also be caused by alcohol exposure before birth. Most kids with FAS/ARND have some degree of attachment disorders.
http://www.come-over.to/FAS/Attachment2.htm
FAS/ARND or Attachment Disorder? Q: I'm so confused. After reading all the info on FAS/ARND, I was pretty confident that this was what my two adopted sons have. Now after reading info on attachment disorders, I see they have some of those symptoms, but more FAE/FAS. What is the difference? Pretty soon they will be seeing someone that deals with attachment disorders - will they be able to know which is which? A: Sometimes there is not much difference between FAS/ARND and attachment disorders because sometimes kids have both. Attachment disorders can be mild or severe. They can be caused by abuse, neglect, trauma of multiple placements, and/or lack of bonding with the primary caregiver. Attachment disorders can also be caused by alcohol exposure before birth. Most kids with FAS/ARND have some degree of attachment disorders. It is hard to tell how much is from their early years before being placed in a stable, permanent home and how much was present at birth due to brain damage from alcohol. We have seen many children with FAS/ARND who were placed in healthy nurturing homes from the very first day who still display symptoms of attacment disorder, from mild to severe. So we do know that a substantial part of it is neurological dysfunction, in which case the typical psychological therapies might not be very effective, because those are based on the assumption that it is entirely due to lack of healthy bonding. It could be partly this, in the case of children who have been bounced around, but therapists should also look at the possibility of permanent brain damage, in which the focus of therapy might be adjusted.

Reactive attachment disorder of infancy or early childhood
Contents of this page: Definition Reactive attachment disorder is a disturbance of social interaction caused by neglect of a child's basic physical and emotional needs, particularly during infancy. Babies placed in orphanages at birth and raised by multiple caretakers without primary parent-figures can also develop this disorder, even if physical care was adequate. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Reactive attachment disorder is caused by neglect of an infant's needs for physical safety, food, touching, and emotional bonds with a primary and/or secondary caretaker. The risk of neglect to the infant or child is increased with parental isolation, lack of parenting skills, teen parents, or a caregiver who is mentally retarded. A frequent change in caregivers (e.g., occuring in orphanages or foster care) is another cause of reactive attachment disorder. Children adopted from foreign orphanages are commonly affected, particularly if they were removed from their birth parents during the first weeks of life.

The Infinite Mind: Attachment Week of January 2, 2002 It's human to connect. Without the opportunity for consistent relationships early in life, though, development founders. This show explores attachment disorder and attachment problems that affect children who have been abused and neglected. Guests include psychiatrist Dr. Charles Zeanah , clinical psychologist Robert Karen Thais Tepper , the founder of the Network for the Post-Institutionalized Child, and Joyce Peters , the adoptive mother of a child with attachment disorder. Host Dr. Fred Goodwin begins the show by noting that attachment disorder is a relatively new term that was absent from psychiatric textbooks as little as five years ago. Since then, an increase in adoptions from Eastern Europe, Russia and China and a new appreciation for the importance of environment in shaping children have brought attachment problems to the fore. Dr. Goodwin notes that the term attachment disorder is reserved for children who are so damaged by abuse and neglect they don't bond with caretakers and wreak havoc on everyone around them. Many of them, Dr. Goodwin points out, make remarkable recoveries. Joyce Peters then discusses her daughter, Elizabeth, who was abandoned by her birth mother at the age of four. After that, Elizabeth was moved from 10 foster homes until, at the age of 8½, she was adopted by Peters. Elizabeth had tantrums, stole, lied, played with fire and rebuffed contact with Peters. Eventually, a doctor diagnosed Elizabeth with attachment disorder. She has since received therapy. Peters recounts her daughter's progress and says, since Elizabeth can now talk about her traumatic past, says she's confident Elizabeth will make it. You can e-mail Joyce Peters at
