How To Prevent Athletes Foot
Make athletes foot a thing of the past!
Most Americans have athletes foot (tinea pedis) at some point in their lives, and some of them seem to keep it almost all the time. But in fact, it is very easy to prevent athletes foot!
There is one primary cause of athletes foot: sweaty feet! Athletes foot is a fungus that grows on the feet and between the toes. Simply keeping your feet clean and dry will usually prevent it from occurring.
Here are a few tips:
  • Keep extra pairs of dry, clean socks and shoes handy in case your feet get wet. This is essential for athletes, hikers, and people who are active or on their feet all day.
  • When the weather and the situation allows, wear open sandals without socks to let your feet air out and remain dry.
  • Make sure your feet are completely dry before putting on your socks and shoes. Never jump right out of the shower or swimming pool and cover your wet feet.
  • Apply a high quality foot powder to your feet and inside your shoes on a regular basis.
Conclusion
The best way to prevent athletes foot is to simply avoid the conditions under which the fungus can grow. In short, keep your feet dry and you won't have to deal with athletes foot!

About SCP Athlete's Foot
What is it?
Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection. It can lead to intense itching, cracked, blistered or peeling areas of skin, redness and scaling. It can occur on moist, waterlogged skin especially between the fourth and fifth toes, or on dry, flaky skin around the heels or elsewhere on the foot. What causes it?
“It’s caused by a number of fungal species which you can pick up from anywhere (typically communal areas such as pools, showers and changing rooms) or anywhere where you may walk around barefooted,” says registered podiatrist Shuja Qureshi. “The fungus on each bit of skin that falls away from someone else’s feet can be picked up by you if you’re prone.” Once your feet have been contaminated, the warm, dark and sweaty environment of feet cramped in shoes or trainers provides the ideal breeding ground for the fungus. However, athlete’s foot also occurs in dry, flaky areas. It’s quite common in summer sandal-wearers. The sun makes your skin dry out, so it loses its natural protective oils; this combined with the constant trauma from sandals makes them more prone to infection. Who gets it?

Neem extracts have been found to be effective against tinea pedia, the fungus that causes athletes foot ( Prasad, et al, 1993 ). Fungal infections of this type affect nine out of ten people in the United States at some time or another. Untreated, this fungus can attack the toenails and even cause secondary infections throughout the body. A corn starch powder combined with powdered neem leaves makes an excellent preventative while alcoholic neem leaf extract or a neem-based lotion can be used if an infection has already begun. Athlete's foot is an infection of the foot caused by a dermatophyte, a microscopic fungus that lives on dead tissue of the hair, toenails, and outer skin layers. These fungi thrive in warm, moist environments such as shoes, stockings, and the floors of public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Athlete's foot is transmitted through contact with a cut or abrasion on the bottom of the foot.Dermatophyte infections cause raised, circular pimples or blisters that resemble the lesions caused by ringworm. The infections are named for the part of the body they infect; therefore, tinea pedis refers to an infection of the feet. Athlete's foot is most common in men from the teens to the early 50s. The reason people get it is mainly by the habits they have regarding personal hygiene and their daily activity (exposure in public places). People with compromised immune systems are at greater risk.

Fungal Skin Infections
Fungi usually make their homes in moist areas of the body where skin surfaces meet: between the toes, in the genital area, and under the breasts. Many fungi that infect the skin (dermatophytes) live only in the topmost layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum) and do not penetrate deeper. Obese people are more likely to get these infections because they have excessive skinfolds. People with diabetes tend to be more susceptible to fungal infections as well. Strangely, fungal infections on one part of the body can cause rashes on other parts of the body that are not infected. For example, a fungal infection on the foot may cause an itchy, bumpy rash on the fingers. These eruptions (dermatophytids, or id reactions) are allergic reactions to the fungus. They do not result from touching the infected area. A doctor may suspect a fungal infection upon seeing a red, irritated, or scaly rash in one of the commonly affected areas. The doctor can usually confirm the diagnosis by scraping off a small amount of skin and having it examined under a microscope or placed in a culture medium that will grow the specific fungus so that it can be identified.

Athlete's foot
Athlete's foot is the term used for a common disorder affecting the skin between the toes. The cleft between the fourth and fifth toes is the most frequently affected, with moist soft skin that peels off easily. Often the skin splits uncomfortably (a fissure). It may smell unpleasant. It is generally mild; very inflamed athlete's foot is generally due to secondary bacterial infection. Athlete's foot
Causes
Athlete's foot can be due to one factor or a combination of factors.
  • Bacterial infection ( erythrasma , pseudomonas, Staphylococci and Streptococci). Mould infection. Soft corn (build-up of thick skin because the toes are pressing against each other). Injury e.g. over-vigorous removal of peeling skin. Skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema or keratolysis exfoliativa. Fungal infection tinea pedis
Predisposing factors
Athlete's foot is more common in those who participate in sports because:
  • They may wear occlusive footwear.

Athlete's foot, caused by the fungus trichophytonrubrum, thrives in warmth and moisture. It makes your feet feel itchy and irritated. Here are a few tips to help keep you from getting it. Steps: Dry your feet carefully after bathing, showering or swimming. Be sure to dry between your toes. Wear shoes made from leather and other natural materials. Avoid waterproof or rubber shoes for everyday use because your feet won't be able to breathe. Change your socks frequently. If you have sweaty feet, take a pair of fresh socks to work with you and put on clean ones during your lunch hour. Then put on another fresh pair after work. Choose 100 percent cotton, white socks, whenever possible. Colored socks can be more irritating to the feet because of the dyes. Cotton absorbs more moisture than synthetic materials. Wear shower shoes or thongs when using a community shower.

How to Treat Athlete's Foot
Several over-the-counter remedies can help cure athlete's foot. Once you have successfully treated it, be diligent in trying to prevent it from returning. Steps: Apply a topical antifungal ointment such as miconazole or clotrimazole two to three times a day. Reapply after showering and before going to bed. Dry carefully between each toe whenever your feet get wet. Consider using a hair dryer set on low to thoroughly dry your feet. Place cotton balls between your toes at night if your feet perspire excessively when you sleep. Avoid harsh soaps, especially deodorant soaps. Sprinkle an antifungal powder containing miconazole or clotrimazole into your shoes when you plan to wear your shoes for several hours. Pour a small amount of astringent onto a piece of gauze and wipe the crusty areas on your feet and between your toes. Then let the gauze sit on the crusty spots for a few minutes. The astringent will draw more moisture from your foot.

Don't Let Your Exercise Program
Get Ambushed by Athlete's Foot
When the weather turns nasty in Iowa, many exercise-minded people turn to health clubs to run, swim, lift weights, sweat. This is a good thing. A consistent exercise program is the best program. But sometimes your good intentions can be ambushed. Athlete's foot can hide in the damp areas of the public showers and pool areas. Athlete's foot affects the soles of your feet, the areas between your toes, and may spread to your toenails. "These moist, sweaty areas are good environments for the fungal infection that causes athlete's foot," says Ned Amendola, M.D., director of UI Sports Medicine. Symptoms include itching, burning, redness, and stinging on the soles of your feet. The skin between your toes may peel, blister, or crack. Athlete's foot is not limited to your feet. It can spread to other chronically moist or perspiring areas such as your hands, groin, and underarms if you touch your infected feet and then touch other areas of your body. "Athlete's foot is not limited to athletes. Anyone, particularly workers or farmers wearing work boots for long periods of time, can get it. Anyone whose feet are exposed to wet, damp conditions or who has sweaty feet can get this fungal skin infection," says Amendola.
