Atherosclerosis
What is atherosclerosis?
Atherosclerosis is a type of arteriosclerosis caused by a build-up of plaque in the inner lining of an artery. (Arteriosclerosis is a general term for thickening or hardening of the arteries.) Plaque is made up of deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin, and can develop in medium or large arteries. The artery wall becomes thickened and looses its elasticity. FOR MORE INFORMATION Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory
A full range of noninvasive tests is available at our Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory including tests for atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a slow, progressive disease that may start as early as childhood. However, the disease has the potential to progress rapidly. What causes atherosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
The terms can be a little confusing. "Athero"-sclerosis is a disease in which fatty material is deposited on the wall of your arteries, which narrows the arteries and eventually restricts blood flow. It is one of several types of "Arterio"-sclerosis, a disease characterized by thickening and hardening of artery walls. However, the word "atherosclerosis" is often used to indicate any of the forms of arteriosclerosis.
Alternative Names: Arteriosclerosis; Hardening of the arteries
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Atherosclerosis is a common disorder of the arteries. Fat cholesterol , and other substances accumulate in the walls of arteries and form "atheromas" or plaques. Eventually, the fatty tissue can erode the wall of the artery, diminish the elasticity (stretchiness) of the artery, and interfere with the blood flow. Clots may form around the plaque deposits, further interfering with blood flow. When blood flow in the arteries to heart muscle becomes severely restricted, it leads to symptoms like

Polycystic ovary syndrome linked to higher risk of heart disease
By Michele Dula Baum CNN.com Health and Food Writer (CNN) Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome may also have a higher risk of heart disease, according to a new study. "Because it appears that PCOS may cause atherosclerosis, these women may represent the largest female group at high risk for the development of early onset coronary artery disease," said Evelyn Talbott, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. "It is important for physicians to recognize these symptoms as signs of a broader, chronic disorder and treat it accordingly, with early lifestyle interventions and/or medications that will reduce cardiovascular disease risks."

Atherosclerosis
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Atherosclerosis is a narrowing of the arteries that can significantly reduce the blood supply to vital organs such as the heart, brain and intestines. In atherosclerosis, the arteries are narrowed when fatty deposits called plaques build up inside. Plaques typically contain cholesterol from low-density lipoproteins (LDL), smooth-muscle cells and fibrous tissue, and sometimes calcium. As a plaque grows along the lining of an artery, it produces a rough area in the artery's normally smooth surface. This rough area can cause a blood clot inside the artery, which can totally block blood flow. As a result, the organ supplied by the blocked artery starves for blood and oxygen, and the organ's cells may either die or suffer severe damage.

The editors are also interested in clinical papers dealing with case studies of specific or general interest, new or unusual lipid syndromes, and the genetic basis and familial incidence of atherosclerosis and related diseases. High quality reports of controlled clinical trials of drugs or diets will be considered provided the paper deals with the mechanism of action of the drug or diet. Definition of Atherosclerosis
This is a disease of the arterial wall in which the layer thickens, causing narrowing of the channel and thus, impairing blood flow. It can occur in any area of the body, but is most important when it happens in the heart, brain or blood vessels leading to the brain.
    Description of Atherosclerosis
The narrowing is due to the formation of plaques (raised patches) in the inner lining of the arteries. These plaques consist of low-density lipoproteins, decaying muscle cells, fibrous tissue, clumps of blood platelets, cholesterol , and sometimes calcium. They tend to form in regions of turbulent blood flow and are found most often in people with high concentrations of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

TCM Hospital: Arteriosclerosis Obliterans of Limbs And Traditional Chinese Medicine In China
Arteriosclerosis obliterans of limbs is a chronic obstructive disease caused by atheroscleorsis of limbs. The disease mostly happens to male patients in their 50-70s. It often involves the large or medium arteries of the lower limbs, such as iliac, femoral and posterior tibial arteries, etc. Those who suffer form diabetes are prone to be affected by this kind of disease, in which case the patient's condition may be serious and often complicated with ulcer and gangrene. This disease also falls into the category of "tuo ju" (gangrene of finger or toe) in TCM. Main Points of Diagnosis 1. The patients with this kind of disease are mostly over 45 years old and often suffer form hypertension. 2. The affected limb has coldness, numbness, formication twinge and intermittent claudication.
