Low Allergy Gardens
It's spring and the sneezing, red eyes and runny noses are with us as some 20% of Australia's population succumb to spring fever.
Common allergies
Allergies amount to some of the worst medical problems that we face in Australia. More than one in five people suffer some sort of allergy problem, ranging from weepy eyes and a runny nose to asthma. Rightly or wrongly, many people blame plants for their woes. But are plants to blame? Often they're not, or the wrong plant is held to be the culprit. Wattle, for instance, a plant most people believe to be top of the list when it comes to allergies, rarely causes any problems at all.
Allergy plants
The biggest trigger comes from plants most people overlook: the grasses, particularly cool climate grasses. Rye grass and other pasture grasses produce copious quantities of pollen when they flower. This fills the air in spring with just the stuff to cause itchy eyes and sneezing. Joining the pollen stream are pollens from many deciduous trees. Again, the flowers that produce the pollen are often barely noticed but the pollen is designed to be carried on the wind and, once airborne, it can cause allergies. Ash, oak, liquidambar and plane trees all produce pollen that can trigger hay fever.

Occupational Asthma Overview
Asthma is a chronic (long-term, ongoing) inflammation of the breathing passages (bronchi) of the lungs. The inflammation irritates the airway, causing breathing problems.
  • Most people with asthma have sudden attacks or periods of bothersome or severe symptoms separated by periods of mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
Asthma is an inflammatory reaction that is triggered by external factors or specific situations.
When a person with asthma is exposed to one of his or her triggers, the inflammation worsens and symptoms ensue.
Occupational asthma is a breathing (respiratory) disease caused by exposure to a trigger in the workplace. The list of known triggers is long and varied.
  • The trigger generally is something inhaled.
Occupational asthma can occur in almost any line of work or any work environment, including offices, stores, hospitals, and medical facilities.
Triggers include contaminants in the air, such as smoke, chemicals, vapors (gases), fumes, dust, or other particles; respiratory infections, such as colds and flu (viruses); allergens in the air, such as molds, animal dander, and pollen; extremes of temperature or humidity; and emotional excitement or stress.

“Treat your symptoms before they get out of control. Don’t feel too proud to get treatment. Know your limits! Remember to follow all of your doctor’s instructions and don’t be afraid to ask questions.” Dave S., University of Michigan Asthma is a disease that affects the air passages in the lungs. People with asthma have supersensitive airways. Exposure to “ Asthma Attack Triggers ” (see below) causes a response in the airways, called an “attack” or “episode.”
    Signs
A cough that lasts more than a week. Coughing may be the only symptom. It may occur during the night or after exercising. Shortness of breath Breathing gets harder and may hurt. It is harder to breathe out than in. Wheezing (a whistling sound while breathing) Tightness in the chest
The cause for asthma is not known. You are more likely to have asthma if other members of your family have it and/or you have allergies. Asthma is more common in children who live in houses with pets and/or tobacco smoke. Asthma is not caused by emotional problems. Strong emotions can bring on an asthma attack, though.

Severe asthma is a serious health concern that can lead to respiratory failure and death. Asthma kills an estimated 5000 people a year in the United States and as many as 470,000 seek hospital treatment for asthma symptoms. Despite its prevalence, experts differ in the definition of the disease. Clinical authorities typically favor a broad, comprehensive definition. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute , for example, defines asthma as:
"a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways (which)…causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing, particularly at night or in the early morning…usually associated with widespread but variable airflow obstruction that is often reversible, either spontaneously or with treatment."
Organizations geared primarily toward the informational needs of patients usually promote, simpler, more "user-friendly" definitions. The

There are many things that just seem to come naturally to some people. Maybe you know a girl who's a natural at sports - put her in a uniform and she's off and running. Some people are naturals at playing an instrument; it's like they were born knowing how to count in 4/4 time. Others are naturals at math; give them a test on theorems or equations and they're happy. But some people have a problem with something that you'd think would come naturally to everyone: breathing. When a person has asthma, it can make breathing very difficult. And when it's hard to breathe, it can affect a person's game, that trumpet solo, and even the all-important geometry test. What Is Asthma?
Asthma (pronounced: az -muh) is a lung condition that causes a person to have difficulty breathing. Asthma is a common condition: More than 6 million kids and teens have it. Asthma affects a person's bronchial (pronounced: brahn -kee-ul) tubes, also known as airways. When a person breathes normally, air is taken in through the nose or mouth and then goes into the trachea (windpipe), passing through the bronchial tubes, into the lungs, and finally back out again. But people with asthma have airways that are inflamed. This means that they swell and produce lots of thick mucus. They are also overly sensitive, or
