Welcome to the new LAIA web site
For more than a decade LAIA has been producing factsheets and charts of respiratory and allergic disease epidemiology. To date, these have been published in paper form via the journal Thorax as well as latterly being available as PDFs from our web site. With the advances in web use we are now moving to a web only service. To mark this change we have made some modifications to the site that we hope will enable you to find the information you are looking for more easily.
  • we now have a search engine all our factsheets, charts and tables are listed by disease we have reproduced all factsheets as web (HTML) pages so that you can easily load and search them we have listed and described all our major data sources we have compiled a list of other sites and a glossary of terms which you may find useful
In future we intend to:
  • to regularly update our most used charts and tables continue producing factsheets of varying lengths to produce updated "key facts" for selected diseases

Asthma
Asthma is inflammation of the tubes of the lungs which causes them to be obstructed, and therefore air passes though them less easily.
Symptoms
The main symptoms are:
  • Difficulty breathing or "shortness of breath", associated with a "tight" feeling. This may be associated with exercise, come on at night, or on exposure to various external stimuli.
  • Audible wheeze is often present.
  • Cough may be the main symptom in some children.
Causes
The cells in the lungs react to various irritants such as:
  • Substances to which the individual is allergic ( allergens ) eg house dust mite, cat/dog fur, horses, pollen.
  • Chemical irritants , eg cigarette/tobacco smoke, pollutants from factories and car exhausts, household cleaners and sprays, perfumes, etc.
  • Low temperatures.
  • Exercise.
This causes the tubes in the lungs to narrow which results in difficulty breathing. Asthma frequently runs in families and is closely associated with hayfever and eczema . Sometimes other members of the family will have asthma, hayfever, or eczema, or combinations of these. It is essentially caused by an allergic type of reaction of the immune system. Sometimes the irritants which set off the reaction are not strictly allergens but chemical irritants eg smoke, some fumes.

The entire medical team of physicians, therapists and nurses meet daily to discuss the reactions of the child to the activities that were performed. They then suggest activities that would be the most appropriate for the following day. The ultimate objectives of the camp are to:
  • educate the child about the etiology of asthma; teach the child to recognize the onset of an asthmatic exacerbation, evaluate the severity and take control of the moment; and dramatically improve self-confidence by providing the knowledge to effectively resolve any asthmatic situation, thereby inspiring courage to venture out and more completely realize their full potential.

Colorado Allergy and Asthma Centers, P.C. and the Breathe Better Foundation have strongly endorsed Senate Bill 207 by Senator Dan Grossman, (D)-Denver and Representative Mark Larson, (R)-Cortez. Senate Bill 207, concerning the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act, would eliminate smoking in all public places, restaurants and bars, and non-public workplaces of four or more employees if the bill passes. The only places where smoking would be allowed are: retail tobacco shops, outdoor areas, private vehicles, hired limousines, private residences, nonpublic places of three or less employees, and 25% of the rooms within any given hotel. Nothing in the bill will prevent local communities from passing stricter laws. Scientific research on this issue has proven what common sense has always supported: secondhand smoke has a negative impact on the public's health. An estimated 53,000 people die every year from exposure to this dangerous substance according to the American Medical Association (AMA), making it the third most preventable source of death in our country. Our patients with asthma and allergies would directly benefit from this proposed legislation and we are in full support of promoting cleaner air in the communities we serve throughout the state of Colorado. Please consider calling your elected officials and asking them to support this bill, for the health and well being of all Coloradans.

Asthma is a disease of the respiratory system. Your respiratory system is made up of your nose and mouth, your windpipe (also called your trachea, pronounced tray-key-uh) , your lungs, and a bunch of air tubes (or airways) that connect your nose and mouth with your lungs (these tubes are called bronchi and bronchioles, prounounced bron-kye and bron-key-oles)
People who have asthma sometimes have trouble breathing. When people who have asthma have this trouble breathing, we call it an asthma attack. Lots of people have asthma attacks, even the two girls just below. Click on their pictures to hear what they feel like when they have an asthma attack.

    Inhalers and asthma deaths
FROM Inhalers and asthma deaths: Samy Suissa, M.D., of Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, and colleagues analyzed a database of more than 30,000 people between ages 5 and 44 who were prescribed anti-asthma drugs between 1975 and 1991. People in the study who died had used fewer canisters of inhaled corticosteroids, generally beclomethasone (Becloforte Inhaler, Vanceril), than those who were still alive. For each additional canister used by participants during the previous year, the risk of death decreased by 21 percent.

    Asthma
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A young girl with asthma using an inhaler Asthma is a disease of the respiratory system in which the airways unexpectedly and suddenly narrow, often in response to a "trigger" such as exposure to an allergen , cold air, exercise, or emotional stress . This narrowing causes symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath , chest tightness, and coughing , which are the hallmarks of asthma. Between episodes, patients normally feel fine. The disorder is a chronic inflammatory condition in which the airways develop increased responsiveness to various stimuli, characterized by bronchial hyperresponsiveness, inflammation , increased mucus production and intermittent airway obstruction. The symptoms of asthma, which can range from mild to life threatening, can usually be controlled with a combination of drugs and lifestyle changes.
