Senate Bill 207, concerning the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act, would eliminate smoking in all public places, restaurants and bars, and non-public workplaces of four or more employees if the bill passes. The only places where smoking would be allowed are: retail tobacco shops, outdoor areas, private vehicles, hired limousines, private residences, nonpublic places of three or less employees, and 25% of the rooms within any given hotel. Nothing in the bill will prevent local communities from passing stricter laws. Scientific research on this issue has proven what common sense has always supported: secondhand smoke has a negative impact on the public's health. An estimated 53,000 people die every year from exposure to this dangerous substance according to the American Medical Association (AMA), making it the third most preventable source of death in our country. Our patients with asthma and allergies would directly benefit from this proposed legislation and we are in full support of promoting cleaner air in the communities we serve throughout the state of Colorado.
