By BRIAN LAGHI Smokers get ill sooner, study says
OTTAWA Canadians who smoke not only die sooner, but a new report
says half of them won't reach their golden years without suffering a chronic
illness. The Statistics Canada analysis, released yesterday, found what almost every
other investigation of smoking has found: that those who indulge in the habit die
before those who don't. But the data, culled from the agency's continuing National Population Health
Survey begun seven years ago, also indicated that smokers' quality of life in

55. Canadian Asthma Consensus Guidelines
Information for professionals and patients, to disseminate and implement the Canadian asthma treatment guidelines.
http://www.asthmaguidelines.com/
A Message from Dr. Dennis Bowie,
Chairman, Canadian Consensus Asthma Guidelines Dissemination and Implementation Committee.
July 2003 New information can now be found throughout this web site.
Please feel free to copy and utilize. Once again, we see that the common factors affecting asthma patients are allergens, respiratory irritants and viral infections. Controlling the environment and asthma education are very important in maintaining control of asthma. In patients sensitive to allergens, attempts should be made to identify the source and a systematic program to eliminate or substantially reduce exposure must be encouraged.
Compliance with these avoidance strategies should be reviewed frequently and their importance emphasized.
Increasing medication for asthma control should not be used as a substitute for avoidance of triggers. Asthma education should be provided at each contact.
A written Action Plan for guided self-management should be considered for all patients and reviewed on each visit.
Patients need to use their Action Plan at the first symptoms of uncontrolled asthma. The Action Plan should instruct the patient to double or quadruple their inhaled corticosteroid either twice or four times a day. On this web site, you will find a number of sample

"I have just watched a roomful of people who have suffered terribly from perhaps the most rampant disease of this generation, long thought to be incurable, begin to recover from it. Dramatically. Almost incredibly. Within five days." "It has changed my life. Before, I could barely walk up stairs now I can manage a 10 mile hike. I was using my puffer four times a day as well as steroids and now I'm off all drugs" "Karon,
Thanks a million!! Have had my first session -it is working, and I WILL
CONTINUE!!
Again, THANKS, for your report!!
The best to you, "Good day, Karon! Just wanted to touch base with you and say that I'm still totally amazed at how well this method works for me! We just got back from a 3-week vacation to places I'd never been before, and I did experience several times where I felt that tightness starting, but doing [the treatment] got me out of the woods, and no medication was required! I truly just can't believe it. I did have to use the inhaler, one puff, just once, but that sure beats what I'd been experiencing before starting this program. Since starting this program I've tried to encourage friends I know to TRY it, to check it out, to go to your web page and read there and on their own (as you suggest), but as far as I know, none have felt they could take the "leap of faith" and try it. Amazing, isn't it, that folks would rather take a medication than try something new?! But, in their defense, I don't know if I'd have done it either if I hadn't been in crisis mode, so will keep the information handy for whenever any of them gets to the point I was to, and then maybe they'll try it.
