As parents of a son with Asperger Syndrome, we've sought out a wide range of experts to help him succeed. We're sharing the best of what we've learned in a series of videos to help people with AS and other special needs. Because of the many similarities between Asperger Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, PDD-NOS and Nonverbal Learning Disabilities, many of the strategies described in our AS programs should also work well for individuals who are diagnosed with these conditions. About MedAu
Last Modified 2/8/99 In 1944, a Viennese psychiatrist named Hans Asperger published a paper in which he described a group of children with a propensity towards social isolation and awkwardness. While these children displayed some 'typical autistic behaviours' they differed from children with autism in that they had normal intellectual development in some areas of their lives. In recent years, Asperger Syndrome has increasingly been recognised by professionals and parents. The need for a basic understanding and practical information about Asperger Syndrome is the foundation of this book. The information is presented in an easy-to-read style and avoids unnecessary technical jargon. A number of case studies are given, demonstrating the range of behaviours found in children and youth diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome and describing how families have adjusted to life after diagnosis. It is a book that is accessible to both professionals and lay people.

    • Asperger's syndrome (AS) is a problem of child development. It is a brain disorder. It is one of the pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). Other PDD's include autism, Rett's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and PDD-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). It is sometimes called high-functioning autism. It causes a wide range of developmental problems in young children. AS usually affects a child's social skills, communication skills, and behavior. Unlike an autistic child, a child with AS has fewer problems with language. He usually has average to above average intelligence. He usually functions well in every day life. But, he has problems interacting with others. A child with AS wants to fit in and make friends. He just does not know how to do it.

Introductory Information on Autism and Asperger Syndrome
(Adapted from Beyond the Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome By Stephen M. Shore)
    Introduction
    Pervasive Developmental Disorders
However, this depiction isolates autism from the diagnoses of Asperger Syndrome and Pervasive Development Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified and fails to describe what I feel are the true relationships between these disorders. Asperger Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) are not classified as part of the autistic continuum. Addressing autism, Asperger Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified by what they have in common makes it easier to understand their relationship to each others and the Pervasive Developmental Disorder in general. These three diagnoses share the specific delays in social interaction, communication and restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities. PDD-NOS is often used as a catch-all in which to cast children who exhibit a certain number and severity of autistic traits. Often the examiner doesn't quite know where to place the child or wants to protect parents and child from the stigma of an autism diagnosis. The reality is that an autism diagnosis will provide more services in many school municipalities. Thus it should be used when it is appropriate.

    113. Asperger's Disorder - AACAP Facts For Families # 69
Asperger s Disorder is the term for a specific type of pervasive developmental disorder which is characterized by problems in development of social skills
    http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/69.htm
A SPERGER'S D ISORDER No. 69 Asperger's Disorder is the term for a specific type of pervasive developmental disorder which is characterized by problems in development of social skills and behavior. In the past, many children with Asperger's Disorder were diagnosed as having autism, another of the pervasive developmental disorders, or other disorders. While autism and Asperger's have certain similarities, there are also important differences. For this reason, children suspected of having these conditions require careful evaluation. In general, a child with Asperger's Disorder functions at a higher level than the typical child with autism. For example, many children with Asperger's Disorder have normal intelligence. While most children with autism fail to develop language or have language delays, children with Asperger's Disorder are usually using words by the age of two, although their speech patterns may be somewhat odd. Most children with Asperger's Disorder have difficulty interacting with their peers. They tend to be loners and may display eccentric behaviors. A child with Asperger's, for example, may spend hours each day preoccupied with counting cars passing on the street or watching only the weather channel on television. Coordination difficulties are also common with this disorder. These children often have special educational needs. Although the cause of Asperger's Disorder is not yet known, current research suggests that a tendency toward the condition may run in families. Children with Asperger's Disorder are also at risk for other psychiatric problems including depression, attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
