By Catherine Faherty BIO
According to Tony Attwood and other professionals in the field, women with high functioning autism and Aspergers may be an underdiagnosed population. If this is true, some of the reasons may be attributed to gender differences. However, there were topics that all agree are a direct result of being a woman with autism, such as common behavioral and social expectations by the society at large. At the top of the list were the expectations of being sensitive to others and displaying empathy. The desire to be respected as an individual, and as a woman, was voiced clearly and strongly. Although this desire is probably equally shared among grown men with autism, the women voiced these desires clearly, with deep emotion and passion, when talking with other women.

    Asperger Syndrome
I recently wrote about my Myer-Briggs INTJ personality, so I thought I might post this. I have never seen this term before until recently. I went to a psychiatrist recently for mild depression. I had met a woman earlier, who never believed in depression or that she had it, but she took drugs that were prescribed to her, and the effect was enormouslike night and day. She suggested that I looked into depression medication if there is a remote chance. Since, for one or two months, I found myself with an unusually low level of energy, being unproductive and unable to get work done for reasons I could not explain, I decided to try it out. I could not even will myself to do the simplest things. I examined my diet, my level of exercise, and air quality of my house. The psychiatrist (the MD, who prescribes medication) referred me to a psychologist (the PhD) for further testing. I saw on a note a phrase "Pervasive development disorder." Hmm, that doesn't sound good. I went through a battery of tests, to check my intelligence, my memory, my social skills and so on. I was asked to define wordsordinary and difficult and asked to pronounce some difficult words, too. The psychologist noted that at few times that I accomplished some puzzles faster than anyone has seen. Doing in 30 seconds, puzzles that ordinarily take a minimum of two minutes; I felt happy about that. But the final review would be different.

Why are we designing these resources pages as part of a suite? How and why are they connected to one other? The answer lies in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The DSM is the guide typically used by physicians and mental health professionals to diagnose the five disorders listed above. Published by the American Psychiatric Association, the latest edition of the DSM came out in 2000 and is known as the DSM-IV-TR (meaning the fourth edition, text revision). It lists the symptoms associated with each of the five disorders. Most importantly, it also groups

Related Articles Attention Deficit Disorder School Problems Autism Speech Delays Internet Links About Pediatrics ADHD Autism Autism Screening Quiz ... Mental Health Information for Children Like children with autism and other pervasive development delay disorders, children with Asperger syndrome have difficulty with social interactions . They have the most difficulty with interpreting nonverbal cues from other people such as facial expressions and body language. Direct eye contact may be difficult. As a result, they have a hard time forming friendships with their peers. In addition, they do not seek to share interests or experiences with other people. For example, if they like toy trains, they do not bring the toy over to someone to show it off.

Cognitive and social skills, which shape personality and character, develop throughout life. However, genetic or environmental obstacles can obstruct development, especially early in life. One such obstacle is Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger’s Syndrome (or AS) is a congenital neurobiological condition that affects 0.25% of the population. AS is linked to autism spectrum disorder, and includes autistic-like behavior and marked deficiencies in social and communication skills. AS individuals are of average to above average intelligence, some with unusual gifts and creativity. As a diagnosis, it has been known in Europe since the 1940’s, but has only been included in our medical diagnostic manuals since 1994. Thus many adults and children remain undiagnosed. Consequently AS is relatively unknown and not clearly understood, even among professionals.

Asperger's Syndrome Home Global Giftedness Gifted Traits Twice Gifted Traits ... E-Mail I ndividuals with Asperger's Syndrome are truly an interesting population. Gifted individuals with Asperger's Syndrome are even more fascinatingand confusing. Children with this disability are sometimes described as "little professors who can't understand social cues." (Safran, 2001, p. 1) They are highly verbal, have obsessive interests in certain subjects, have exceptional memories, usually have above average IQ's, are hypersensitive to sensory stimuli and experience social isolation. (Neihart, 2000). Gifted individuals can manifest these behaviors as well. However, even though children with Asperger's Syndrome manifest behaviors that are very similar to gifted children, upon closer examination, the motivation for the behaviors is quite different. For example, both gifted children and children with Asperger's Syndrome are highly verbal. Both populations usually have extremely advanced vocabularies and love to talk about their interests. The difference is that children with Asperger's are very literal and have a difficult time with abstract thought. This is not the case with the gifted child. The child with Asperger's will memorize a vast number of facts and parrot them back. The gifted child on the other hand, understands the concepts behind the words.

    What is Asperger's syndrome?
Asperger's Syndrome, a neurological disorder often descibed as a mild variant of autism, is among the autistic spectrum disorders.
Asperger’s Syndrome is a neurological disorder that is often described as a milder variant of autistic disorder, and both conditions are grouped under the broad diagnostic category of autistic spectrum disorders, or pervasive developmental disorders. Pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) are marked by significant impairment in several areas of development, especially those involving social interaction, language development, and communication skills. The trait most characteristic of Asperger’s, though it is not present in all cases of the syndrome, is a pedantic, monotonic speech pattern, usually focused on a particularly narrow area of interest. Asperger’s Syndrome was first identified in 1944 by Dr. Hans Asperger, a Viennese pediatrician. Dr. Asperger identified a number of children (mostly boys) with a cluster of traits that included egocentricity, difficulties with social interaction, clumsiness (including problems with both fine and gross motor control), and pronounced language peculiarities. Among individuals with PDDs there is a wide range of intelligence, abilities, and adaptive or maladaptive behaviors. Those with Asperger’s Syndrome usually function at a fairly high level. The line between Asperger’s and high-functioning autism is not clearly marked, and many individuals who manifest autistic traits but who have well-developed language skills are diagnosed as having Asperger’s Syndrome. Nevertheless, despite commonalities, there usually are identifiable differences between the two syndromes, and the American Psychiatric Association’s “Fourth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” (DSM-IV) presents them as separate and distinct disorders.
