Introduction:
Asperger Syndrome (also called Asperger Disorder) is a relatively new category of developmental disorder, the term having only come into more general use over the past fifteen years. Although a group of children with this clinical picture was originally and very accurately described in the 1940's by a Viennese pediatrician, Hans Asperger, Asperger Syndrome (AS) was "officially" recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders for the first time in the fourth edition published in l994. Because there have been few comprehensive review articles in the medical literature to date and because AS is probably considerably more common than previously realized, this discussion will endeavor to describe the syndrome in some detail and to offer suggestions regarding management. Students with AS are not uncommonly seen in mainstream educational settings, although often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, so this is a topic of some importance for educational personnel, as well as for parents. Since AS itself shows a range or spectrum of symptom severity, many less impaired children who might meet criteria for that diagnosis receive no diagnosis at all and are viewed as "unusual" or "just different,"or are misdiagnosed with conditions such as Attention Deficit Disorder, emotional disturbance, etc. Many in the field believe that there is no clear boundary separating AS from children who are "normal but different." The inclusion of AS as a separate category in the new DMS-4, with fairly clear criteria for diagnosis, should promote greater consistency of labeling in the future.

It is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), one of a distinct group of neurological conditions characterized by a greater or lesser degree of impairment in language and communication skills, as well as repetitive or restrictive patterns of thought and behavior. Other ASDs include: classic autism, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Unlike children with autism, children with AS retain their early language skills.

What's New?
Prospects Transitions Project Prospects, The National Autistic Society's employment consultancy, is launching a new, two-and-a-half year project, which will help final year university students with Asperger syndrome into work. The project is joint funded through the London Development Agency and the European Social Fund and is aimed at students who live and wish to work in the London area. The aim of the project is to work with students who have either just finished their studies or are about to enter their final year at university. The aim of the project is to help them develop the skills which they will need to find employment. This will be achieved through a mixture of workshops and one-to-one sessions, focusing on areas such as career choice, communication and interview skills as well as effective job searching. The project will run until 2007. Prospects is currently looking for people, who meet the criteria to join the project. For more information about the Transitions project or to see if you would qualify to access it, please contact Judith Kerem on 020 7704 7450. Alternatively, we can be contacted via email. Our children range in age from 3 years to adult. We hold regular coffee mornings and evenings, information sessions and seminars on Asperger's Syndrome. Many people really enjoy getting together for a chat, a laugh and sometimes a cry about their family member who has AS, in an understanding and supportive environment.

Asperger's Syndrome: What is it? Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) which falls within the Autism Spectrum. The main features of this disorder become obvious during early childhood and remain constant throughout life although adaptation and degree of actual disability vary. It is very rarely recognized before the age of three and is more common in males than females. Some Common Features of Asperger's Syndrome Children

The Geek Syndrome
Autism - and its milder cousin Asperger's syndrome - is surging among the children of Silicon Valley. Are math-and-tech genes to blame?
By Steve Silberman Nick is building a universe on his computer. He's already mapped out his first planet: an anvil-shaped world called Denthaim that is home to gnomes and gods, along with a three-gendered race known as kiman. As he tells me about his universe, Nick looks up at the ceiling, humming fragments of a melody over and over. "I'm thinking of making magic a form of quantum physics, but I haven't decided yet, actually," he explains. The music of his speech is pitched high, alternately poetic and pedantic - as if the soul of an Oxford don has been awkwardly reincarnated in the body of a chubby, rosy-cheeked boy from Silicon Valley. Nick is 11 years old. Nick's father is a software engineer, and his mother is a computer programmer. They've known that Nick was an unusual child for a long time. He's infatuated with fantasy novels, but he has a hard time reading people. Clearly bright and imaginative, he has no friends his own age. His inability to pick up on hidden agendas makes him easy prey to certain cruelties, as when some kids paid him a few dollars to wear a ridiculous outfit to school.

Autism, Asperger's syndrome and semantic-pragmatic disorder: Where are the boundaries?
D. V. M. Bishop Department of Psychology, University of Manchester ABSTRACT The diagnostic criteria for autism have been refined and made more objective since Kanner first described the syndrome, so there is now reasonable consistency in how this diagnosis is applied. However, many children do not meet these criteria, yet show some of the features of autism. Where language development is impaired, such children tend to be classed as cases of developmental dysphasia (or specific language impairment) whereas those who learn to talk at the normal age may be diagnosed as having Asperger's syndrome. It is argued that rather than thinking in terms of rigid diagnostic categories, we should recognise that the core syndrome of autism shades into other milder forms of disorder in which language or non-verbal behaviour may be disproportionately impaired. Key words: autism, Asperger's syndrome, semantic-pragmatic disorder.

s="na";c="na";j="na";f=""+escape(document.referrer) Asperger's Syndrome is a newly recognized neurological disorder. It shares many of the same characteristics of autism, although people with Asperger's Syndrome do not have the accompanying disabilities. Those afflicted with this syndrome have difficulty understanding what those around them think and feel. As a result of this, they often behave inappropriately in social situations, or do things that may appear to be unkind or callous. Many Asperger sufferers have a difficult time in planning and coping with change despite average or above-average intelligence. This manifests itself as a notable lack of "common sense". There are many nuances to how this disorder affects the lives of those afflicted as well as the lives of their families. It is the spouses and the siblings and the children of those afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome whom we are trying to reach. Especially those whose relative has not been correctly diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome until well into their adulthood.

76. Asperger Syndrome-FAQ
Individuals with Asperger syndrome can have symptoms ranging from mild to severe. An appendix includes the diagnostic criteria for Asperger syndrome.
http://ericec.org/faq/asperger.html
Asperger Syndrome (updated July 2002)
What can you tell me about Asperger syndrome? Asperger syndrome (AS) is a neurobiological disorder, which most researchers feel falls at the "high end" of the autistic spectrum. Individuals with Asperger syndrome can have symptoms ranging from mild to severe. While sharing many of the same characteristics as Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified and High-Functioning Autism, Asperger syndrome is a relatively new term in the United States, having only recently being officially recognized as a diagnosis by the medical community. Individuals with AS can exhibit a variety of characteristics and the disorder can range from mild to severe. Individuals with AS show marked deficiencies in social skills, have difficulties with transitions or changes and prefer sameness. They often have obsessive routines and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest. They have a great deal of difficulty reading nonverbal cues (body language) and very often the individual with AS has difficulty determining proper body space. Often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights, the person with AS may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights no one else seems to hear or see. It's important to remember that the person with AS perceives the world very differently. Therefore, many behaviors that seem odd or unusual are due to those neurological differences and not the result of intentional rudeness or bad behavior, and most certainly not the result of "improper parenting."
